The Division Is "Really, Really Next-Gen," Whatever That Means

Ubisoft revealed a brand new Tom Clancy effort this past week at E3, and it has nothing to do with Splinter Cell.

It's The Division and according to creative director Nicklas Cedarstrom in a GotGame interview, this is a "massively multiplayer online third-person RPG," with both strategy and shooter elements. And that's just the beginning, apparently.

They didn't really go into details but they did say it'll be "really, really next-gen," which presents us with a host of possibilities. This includes the companion gaming feature for tablets and smartphones (via companion app), which is supposedly "incredible" and boasts 100%, real-time interaction with the game. Heck, you'll even be able to leap into the game from a bird's-eye view and interact with users playing it on the consoles. Talk about redefining gaming on the go...

Plus, you've got the blending of a ton of different genres and gameplay mechanics, which sounds absolutely mind-boggling. Is this the type of game that piques your interest?

It looked really pretty and realistic. This looks promising.

If it weren't an MMO I would be so down for this.

This is interesting in the sense that it illustrates that with the new generation comes more than "just better graphics", that some said they didn't really see the need for anyways earlier when the new generation were discussed.

As I said back then, the better graphics is the *least* interesting thing come next gen. It's the new stuff, the stuff they just could not do during the current gen, that is exciting.
What other game concepts are brewing out there now as we speak, that offers stuff we simply have not experienced yet?

thats exactly the problem next gen is facing, how do you define next gen?
what makes next gen next gen?
one thing thats really disappointed me with next gen games so far, they really dont feel next gen.
maybe they just mean the scale of the maps, and how theres going to be so many clans across the country having their own sort of game, that part is what wouldent be possible on current systems.
but is that all?
you just dont get the sense of wow thats so amazing theres no way that would be possible on current systems that you got with the past generations.
im still yet to see a single reason why people should spend another 550+ bucks.
besides prettier graphics, whats that 550+ bucks getting you?

I also found myself thinking that many of the "next gen" games we saw (especially live game-play) didn't seem to have graphics that much better than some of the current and recent PS3 exclusives. I think part of that is a matter of how much more does it cost (money wise) to produce even more impressive graphics. While we are only seeing the first iteration of games for the PS4, on alpha or pre-alpha game builds no less, it should be noted that many of the early dev kits that developers got didn't have the 8 GB of memory that the PS4 will ship with. I do think that graphics will get better by launch as dev kits are replaced and software tools are refined. I also believe that most of the benefit seen in this generation will be much larger maps and open-world games.

im not talking about graphics though.
theres really nothing that has been shown that makes you say wow thats really impressive theres no way they could of done that on current systems!
and even funnier, back on the topic of graphics, the best looking MP game at E3, watch dogs, is actually a cross generation game.
funny how some games look so amazing and others look meh.
wonder what AC4 was running on, hope it was a current gen system because it looked nigh on identical to AC3!
some games looked quite impressive, others did not.
even BF4 did not look that amazing, and that was running on a pretty high spec PC!
no where near as good looking as what watch dogs, or the division were.

Hard to believe, especially from someone such as myself who prefers a solo experience, but this was my personal favourite game I saw at E3.

Well that and Final Fantasy X/X2 HD. CAN'T WAIT!!

I didn't watch the SE conference, did they show anything new about X HD? That's the most exciting Final Fantasy title in years and it's ancient.

"The Division" was this years "Watch Dogs".

Anyone else noticed that of all the Ubisoft live game-play demos during their presentation, this was the only one (that I noticed was) running on a PS4? No wonder it was also the best looking graphics of pretty much any next gen title!

@World I did see a new trailer floating about somewhere on ign or gamespot. It's simply FFX/X-2 in HD and a little prettier than before. AND that's all I want from it. Period. The nostalgia is going to be overwhelming :D

Yup, that's all I want too. Who knows how long it will take to come though so more visuals are nice.

I am really tired of the catch phrase "Next Gen". Really. Its meaningless like the definition of "art". It means anything and everything and depends on who is saying it and what it means to them. "Next Gen: could mean its only coming out on the new consoles, its bigger game for the next consoles, its more detailed graphic textures for the next console, it could be all these things that you would expect on the next console but its really coming out on the current consoles .... Ugh!. Just saying "next gen" is not convincing me to buy the bloody thing.

All I can say to the game developers, publishes, "artists"... just tell me what the game is, what it is about, when is it coming out (date and console and not just saying "next gen" consoles), what it features and what can we do or what is the gameplay, and story please. Like the old catch phrase or cliche... just the facts mam... just the facts (and not the Bruce Willis version). And if its multiplayer.. say it at the beginning of the conversation so I can say pass. Which I know you did already in this case.

<<grumpy>> Wheres the Advil?

Keep Playing!
