October NPD: PS4 Falls From The Top, Halo 5 Is #1 Game

Last month, we wondered if the PlayStation 4 price cut could keep PS4 ahead of Xbox One.

As it turns out, the answer is "no," at least for October 2015.

While Sony's console has routinely outsold Microsoft's system in the U.S. region, the latest NPD results for the month of October show a reversal: Xbox One is on top.

Well, PS4 dropped to $350, but Xbox One had Halo 5: Guardians, which was the #1 title for the month. Overall console sales dropped just a little when compared to October 2014; sales fell from $271.1 million to $270.3 million. However, this was the fault of portable sales falling 27 percent and as NPD analyst Liam Callahan clarified:

"This was due entirely to 8th generation console hardware sales, which rose by 12 percent to offset the 66 percent decrease in hardware sales for 7th generation consoles."

Unsurprisingly, a whopping 96 percent of hardware sales came in the form of bundles. As for software, overall sales were down 3 percent ($337.7 million, down from $349.4 million) and as stated above, Halo 5 led the way. Here's the top 10 list and note the platforms in parentheses; this shows the ranking of multiplatform sales. As you can see, PS4 leads in all of them with the exception of Rock Band 4.

  • Halo 5: Guardians (XBO)
  • NBA 2K16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  • Assassin's Creed Syndicate (PS4, XBO)
  • Madden NFL 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  • WWE 2K16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  • FIFA 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  • Destiny: The Taken King (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  • Yoshi's Woolly World (NWU)
  • Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (PS4)
  • Rock Band 4 (XBO, PS4)

Does Sony have a gaming icon as powerful as Master Chief or Mario?
It would seem Solid Snake was the closest thing to that...

Maybe Cloud, even though FF is no longer an exclusive franchise.

yea, Cloud would be strong. But strangely he was unveiled today as an add-on character for Nintendo's Super Smash Bros..... whatever that entails.

I mean seriously. He even has his own Midgar stage and summon spells. Hell has just froze over.

I saw.

Square Enix obviously knows the power of that mascot, which is why they revealed a completely fake Final Fantasy VII remake at this year's E3, just to make people like them again. ;)

I really wouldn't put Cloud in the same category as those two, not with only one game and a movie to his name. Hell, he may have been the protagonist, but the game still distributed a fair bit of the spotlight to the rest of the party so the only thing where he's actually always at the center is the movie.

I like to think that Sony simply hasn't milked a single icon to ridiculous levels. PS consoles tend to have a fairly wide variety of well known characters associated with them,as opposed to how Mario comes to mind the moment anyone even hears the word Nintendo.

Nathan Drake is probably the most recognizable Sony exclusive character right now, even if the Uncharted games have never quite been the sales juggernaut that Mario and Halo have.

Drake is definitely their own bonafied leader but I feel that's more because of ND's excellence of handling the franchise than it is the novelty of Drake himself.

I think Sackboy is the most recognizable PlayStation icon...

Speaking of Sackboy, we finally got around to Little Big Planet for Vita and man, that is just a fantastic game. Much improved over the PSP installment.

And yeah Sackboy is another of Sony's more recognizable characters.

Interesting question. I thought it was going to be Crash but he ended up sitting at the little kids table with Sonic.

Yoshi's Woolly World's sounds like the best game from that list that I have not played. Everything else just screams "BLAH" to me.

Remember this for the rest of your life:

'What person A says about person/thing B says more about person A than it does about person/thing B"

The other option is to just stay silent.

You know, this is the only gaming sites I actually read through the comments because it's not littered with N4G/IGN trash. Then I come across TrueAssassin86x comments on two different articles and....... feel stupider for having read them. I hope you're just a kid because if you're an adult, you need medication.

Yeah, Evil Incarnate, whenever I see his/her screen name, I promptly skip reading his ignorance. 80% of his/her comments are about how "cool" and "hip" he/she is for being a multi-console owner, and the other 20% is hateful drivel.

How this kid still slithers around here is beyond me.

Wait... are you trying to suggest a PS3 remake collection should outsell a new entry in a console's flagship franchise?

Why is this surprising or laughable?

I read on NeoGaf..

XB1 - 303,000
PS4 - 275,000

28,000 consoles in the big picture really isn't much.

At all.
