Is Fallout 4 Game Of The Year? Critical Average Says "No"

Well, I guess all the contenders for Game of the Year 2015 are now available (unless you think Star Wars: Battlefront has an outside shot).

And of those contenders, many were thinking Fallout 4 would storm the critical charts and be a definite possibility for the year's most illustrious award. And for the most part, those people weren't wrong...but Bethesda's latest certainly doesn't have the lead, if we go by the average Metacritic ranking.

As of now, Fallout 4 holds an 87 rating (86 on PC and 88 on Xbox One), which is great but well below a few of the contenders: For instance, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain leads the way with a stellar 93 rating (95 on Xbox One and 91 on PC), while The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt holds a 92 average rating (93 on PC and 91 on Xbox One), and the PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne also has a 92.

As a frame of reference, Fallout 4 now has the same review average as Batman: Arkham Knight, and the recently released Halo 5: Guardians is lower at 85. This all being said, do you still see Fallout 4 garnering plenty of GotY awards from various sources?

I've played all the contenders you have listed and for me Fallout is the winner just barely beating out MGSV.

had FO4 released Sept 1st and MGSV two days ago, would you be saying the same thing right now?

Absolutely! One of my main reasons is the lackluster MGO, now someone will say that Fallout doesn't even have an online component so how can you make the comparison? Simple i'm basing it off of the disc in its entirety.

You could easily call me biased to the Fallout franchise but i also love MGS so it is a tough decision for me.

Another reason i think Fallout is better is the enemies that you encounter in the open world are far better than in MGS. I had no fear walking through the world of MGSV whereas i am extremely careful moving through Fallout.

The additions and improvements made to Fallout are also why i would vote it for goty, i have always thought that Bethesda has the best concepts they could just never put them smoothly onto a disc until now.

Started playing it tonight!
Hot dang it's sucking me right in.
The graphics were way better than I expected. I was expecting a bunch of muddy looking poop. Sure the character modeling and animation looks dated, and the diffuse (texture) maps look not crisp at point blank but the materials on the scenes and objects themselves receive light much better than most games.
It's all part of the physically based materials the game uses. Which basically means the materials have settings on them that calculate how light should behave when it receives it. Everything in real life receives, reflects, absorbs light differently. That's being simulated here. In the past most games just had a bitmap (the thing we're used to calling a texture) and a specular level (the plastic-like setting that makes stuff shiny), these days newer games go well beyond that with material settings that are "physically" accurate. Where stone receives light different than say metal, trees, or walls or whatever.

Anyway, enough graphics talk. This game is cool!

I tell myself I'm just going to play for an hour but there always seems to be something keeping me invested in the game. I refuse to use fast travel (in just about any game) and I think my enjoyment in the world that has been created has benefited immensely. It's not usually point A or B but what's inbetween.

I think it could still snag several Game of the Year awards, largely because 'Fallout 4' is going to sell well. Not as well as if it had taken the critics by storm, but still more than the other contenders for sure. So the fact that more users will have played that game than the others will certainly factor into it.
But I think the race is now between 'The Phantom Pain' and 'Wild Hunt.' Personally, the choice for me is clear, as 'The Phantom Pain' is one of the most polished games I've ever played, certainly the most polished open world game.

MGSV has the best gameplay in my opinion and it shockingly absorbed me into its world. The Witcher 3 had some truly great writing and gaming moments, but a lot of boring fluff inside that dialogue with a world I didn't truly get lost in. Batman was probably the funnest/most satisfying game I played all year (huge Batman fan), but not the best. Bloodborne is a true classic and should be right there with the best of the best. But MGSV stands above the competition.

But hats off to FO4. One of a kind experience even with all its familiar systems. I don't know if I would call it the official GOTY, but it is for me.

Fallout 4 is my GOTY hands down because of all the goodness it offers.

I just discovered the "workshop" feature of this game, and ever since then, I am stuck at the Red Rocket. So much junk to scrap and so little time to do it!!

I need a Fallout holiday!

Oh man! That settlement crafting is beyond addicting. It really sucked me in. But yes, Fallout 4 is GOTY awesome. I haven't even started weapon modding which was addictive in MGSV.

Oh man is it ever. I have tried just about every modification I could think of. Also once I was done with all my development projects and building my FOB's I had nothing left to spend GMP on besides deployments. Then bam, they updated the game again and added the option for a 3rd FOB and a good number of new development projects. Now I'm burning through cash and resources again.

If Fallout 4's development projects and micro management tasks are as good as they are in MGS5, I just might pick it up.

Not sure about mods in FO4, but I'm pretty sure it wont be as legit as MGSV upgrade system was.

@Jawknee..

The settlement system in Fallout 4 is good in it's own right brother and I recommend that you check out some videos on it.

Plenty of cool things to do in the world of Fallout!

Tbh Im not really sure what I would vote game of the year, I've yet to play fallout 3 and swbf is out soon. While I enjoyed both the witcher and mgs5 I still have this gut feeling that neither deserve goty.

Fallout 3 was the game of the DECADE for me. Nothing is changed but everything is improved in Fallout 4. So I don't care what any reviewer say: I need no other game the next year. Interpret that as you like.

I am with you on the goodness of Fallout 4. I can see myself playing this game for quite some time.

So much stuff in the wasteland to collect... who needs story missions and side questing!

It should be MGS5. Never has an open world looked and played to well. And never has a game kept me playing it this long without starting a new game. The game just allows you to keep going. Always progressing, always rewarding you. If they keep updating it with new development projects and FOB events, I won't see any reason to stop playing anytime soon. Developing gear and protecting your FOB has become quite addictive. And I don't want to spoil anything for anyone so I'll just say after the latest update you can reverse a plot point that I'm sure many were disgruntled like I was once I that plot point ran its course in my play through.

I didn't play the witcher. Not really into that sort of fantasy. Always preferred Japanese fantasy RPG's over the dungeons and dragonish worlds created by western developers.

My friend does like tha game though. Although he likes MGS5 a lot more. Hehe

Your referring to that game shattering mission towards the end I can only assume.

Yea, I too am not a fan of the Witcher 3 setting, but I enjoyed it. Japanese fantasy is a different story!!!
