You, A Remote Desert Island, And Which Two Game Consoles?

As things get really hectic around the holidays (especially for critics), I often like to mellow out with a classic "desert island" question.

And I'll give people a bit more leeway on this one. I mean, if this remote island somehow has electricity and a TV, why couldn't I have lots of games and plug in more than one console? With that bit of logic, which two game consoles would you take with you? And no, a gaming-quality PC isn't an option; I said consoles, not platforms.

For me, I think it's a no-brainer: PS2 and SNES. PS2 should be obvious; it's completely backwards compatible, which means I have access to both massive PS2 and PS1 libraries and that means I can play the majority of my favorite games of all time. It would undoubtedly be the one console I'd take if I had to choose only one. But as I can bring two, the second is definitely gonna be the SNES, because I can get my retro/nostalgic groove on with Super Mario All-Stars (ha! Another compilation loophole that I don't really need here), Super Mario Kart, the great ol' EA Sports games, some of the Castlevanias, etc.

Of course, I don't have to worry about the old-school Final Fantasy games or Chrono Trigger because I can get all those in the PS1 collections, Final Fantasy Origins, Final Fantasy Chronicles and Final Fantasy Anthology. Still doesn't change my pick, though.

What about you?

A little unfair to rule out bringing a PC for no mentioned reason, but fine. Fat PS3 (the bc model) and a Wii U. Pretty sure that gives me the widest library I can get. Does this mysterious island with electricity and a tv set include an internet connection?

I think it was ruled out in case people thought PC was a console. Plus you could cheat with "emulators".

Just bring an Alienware Steam Machine. No second console needed.

There are 1,423 games that can run on SteamOS already, which is larger than the entirety of the Playstation 3 library. More are being added every day.

Same answer as Ben, PS2 and SNES, both of these consoles cover most if not all of the genres i like (open world, action adventure, platformers, arcade racing, survival horror, stealth, etc.)

Because of its massive library, the PS2. The other would be the PS4 since I'm still playing MGS5. I'd prefer a deserted island with plants and trees over a desert island though.

A desert island is just an uninhabited island. It is not necessarily an island with a sandy, arid climate.

The definition says it doesn't have to be, which means it can be, but probably not what Ben had in mind.

If PsNow has every PlayStation game ever in existence, a PS4. And if the eShop has every Nintendo game in existence, a WiiU.

Done.

Oh wait do I have unlimited money and internet access.

Number 1 is a PS2 & number 2 a Sega Dreamcast.
The PS2 because of over 2000 games for it, & the Dreamcast in memory of the fact that Sega never should have given up on it so soon after
letting it's fanbase resignate with it's first single heartbeat.

But I'd also have to cheat when no one was looking,
by also taking my..
Intellivision,
Panasonic 3DO,
Sega Saturn
Atari jaguar w/ it's CD attachment
Wii
original xbox
360
PSX
PS1
PS3
Sega Gamegear
12 PSP's
and my Vita

Oh, also making sure to re-buy the N64 & Genisis(had to sell both collections), and have a Colecovision, a PS4, & a Xbone drop-shipped ASAP onto my personal Treasure Island.

ARRR, ho, ho, ho, me laddies, it's certainly a gamer's life for me,

If what you're saying is true, then Sony lied about emulation. Ripping to the HDD doesn't change the code it's written in.

I'd say bringing in BC is cheating, console picked means those games only.

Saying that, it's a no brainer for me, PS1 and SNES. Getting SO many of the best RPGS ever made, and just some of the best in general.

Yup cause where do you draw the line. The original Xbox could play almost every game and console that came out before it so does that count?is that considered BC? Then that's the winner.

A PC is not a console, so that definitely rules it out. Unless you count the steam machine since it is considered a console. So there is that loophole.

It's not a console, and you can cheat by saying emulators are on your PC. The point of the discussion being for people to reflect more on the eras of gaming as opposed to a consoles performance level.

So do Steam Machines qualify as a console? They have their own controller and TV ui.
But Steam OS though? Yuck.

My backwards compatible PS3, since it can play so many ps2 and ps1 games. Last pick would be SNES although as much as I like Mario kart it would get boring since you are alone :/ lol.

The PS3 (Because I can play ps1 and ps2 games on it on the original ps3 system) and the Wii U. With the Wii U I can play not only the Wii U games, but tons and tons of OLD GAMES from the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii, and many of the handheld games of old on it through the online store. In other words, I would just download everything before I left for the island.

I win.

"Because I can play ps1 and ps2 games on it on the original ps3 system"

You can but it wasn't perfect. Some of my PS1 games didn't run at 100 percent (music cut-outs in Castlevania: SotN, for example), and same went for a few PS2 games. They were minor issues but if it 's to be forever (i.e., a desert island, they would eventually drive me nuts). And as there isn't really anything on PS3 that I would want for all eternity, I stuck with the perfection of PS2 b/c.

Ben you can't be serious. I know you like stuff like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us, and Uncharted. You'd be willing to toss the PS3-phat away to have SotN's music not skip and have a handful of other games not have small quirks? Hardcore.
The PS3-phat had actual PS2 hardware in it so those games, like 99.9 percent, probably ran just fine.

Anyway, I wonder why the music skips. My guess is that the game actually read music from off the disc like a music CD (I know I used to pop my PSX game in my CD player and listened, had to skip like the first track right away though) Seeing that access times change so much between hardware maybe that messed it up. I wonder if the PSN edition fixes that.....

I never had a game, ps2 or ps1, skip or mess up on me with my fat ps3. To be able to play an infinite amount of games by having the ability to play all 3 generations of playstation games seems to me a no brainer when being stranded for a long time on an island.

I'm sure there was some games that might have had a problem or 2. But then again, like Castlevania Sotn, you could just but it from the psn and play all day. :) There you go. Problem solved.

That kind of inconsistent noise drives me nuts too. If a show has to buffer from time to time, I can't handle that either. These kinds of unnatural delays drive me nuts. (Which is why I wait for patches for AC now and other games)

I have a GTX460 for my PC. A little old, but still alright. But for newer games like Battlefront, it's not powerful enough. And for many other games that at least run smoothly, it has really late pop-in. (Even for games like FFXIV which are otherwise easy to run) But it's a primary reason why I don't play PC as much anymore. I don't want to have to upgrade any more often than 5-7 years. Console gaming allows me to get the box, plug it in, and play. PC gaming, despite what you think, does not allow that type of ease. (But it does require a crap load more maintenance, think: virus software, C-Cleaner, other running processes, etc.)

By the way, my steam is Underdog015 if you're interested in an add, but I don't really play much on it.

Temjin: I do love those PS3 games but I can't see myself playing them over and over again forever. I played Heavy Rain like five or six times but I really don't want to keep playing, and same goes for the Uncharted games.

And it was more than just music cut-outs with PS3 b/c. Don't forget that I thoroughly tested that feature with both PS1 and PS2 games and there were some that had a few annoying flaws. I should also add that I'd pick PS2 because I'm pretty convinced it would last a LOT longer than the phatty PS3. I loved it and mine was fine but lots of people had the YLoD issue and in 15 years, no PS2 (neither of my two original bulky consoles nor the slim I have now) have ever given me a problem.

I suppose the XO and PS4 can't be selected....
The difference between a PS and PC these days is only in the marketing because the PS4 is a PC, running its own Sony OS, like literally.
