Best RPG 2015: Is It The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt vs. Fallout 4?

Technically, 2015 isn't over yet but as far as most role-playing fans are concerned, it is.

At this point, can we say the award for Best Role-Playing Game of the year is a head-to-head showdown between CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Bethesda's Fallout 4?

I'm willing to bet this will be a polarizing debate between RPG fans, because both games are very different. Not only is the main theme and storyline completely different, but so is the core gameplay. Even though both fall into the same genre, it's easy to see how the same gamer could love one and despise the other. Then again, I'm sure there are plenty of RPG lovers out there who have enjoyed both equally.

Personally, I'm not sure what to do. Fallout 4 was the more stable production out of the gate and it beats The Witcher 3 in a few areas, but the latter has a bevy of pluses and strengths I didn't really see in the new Fallout. It's also very hard to make comparisons when the two experiences are just so different.

What do you think? Which wins?

Don't own either(yet), but my spidey-senses are screaming towards Fallout 4

(could all be due to the fact that FO4 is certainly just a wee bit more radioactive though)

Ive only played the Witcher but I have no interest in Fallout because it seems to be primarily about exploring and not about story/character. Witcher had everything I love in a rpg a good character driven story with a great cast of supporting characters.

Wow man, you need to try a JRPG if you thought that about Witcher.

Wth World?!? lol W3 had a great cast. Now you know I'm not into JRPG's, but I'm pretty sure alot of those games had great cast and the JRPG setting made it even better for you. Kind of like how Mass Effect stands out for me because of the scifi setting. I think ME had the best cast ever, but again the scifi setting strengthened that feeling.

It took me a while to warm up to W3's setting and cast because I honestly don't care for fantasy settings, but it eventually clicked. The writing and storytelling were top notch. Most mature themed title I have played. It plays like a book.

Word. Witcher was good for a western game, great even, but I still see variations on cliches versus new takes on archetypes (jrpgs).

I would agree if it didn't feel like an action game more than an RPG. Don't worry Dark Souls 3 and Persona 5 will go at it next year.

I don't own 'Fallout 4' yet, but I never experienced any bugs in 'Wild Hunt' that compare to the ones I've read about in the former. And even though Bethesda has promised to release lots of little patches, I admit I'm still skeptical that they will do as good a job as CD Projekt RED has done.
All in all, I can't say I'm decided until I put in a similar amount of time into 'Fallout 4' as 'Wild Hunt', but I'm definitely leaning towards the latter.

Wild Hunt was much buggier at this stage in its release. Just sayin.

I can't refute that personally, but if the game-crashing issues I've read about are accurate, then that's worse than all the hiccups 'Wild Hunt' was plagued with out of the gate.
I think most people know what they're getting into with Bethesda, but there is a definite backlash against this game even with that in mind.

That's an insult. Fallout is above petty "goty" competitions.

Fallout is a lifestyle, an identifier, an escape. A meta-god, if you like.

I haven't played Fall Out 4 but based on my boring experience with FO3, definitely The Witcher 3. Not only does The Witcher 3 have better story telling but the cast of characters are probably the best this year from any game this generation. Let's not forget The Witcher has some beautiful settings as well while Fall Out is one ugly wasteland.

This is my pov.. Don't take it personally.

World,

The beauty in the wasteland lies in the exploration, the people you run into with a bunch of personalities, the monsters (ghouls, super humans, mutants etc. It's almost a perfect example of what could happen to humanity under the same conditions.

I understand why a lot of gamers love Fallout, it's just The Witcher has more direction (story and exploration) and the setting is more of my taste.

MR Success is right though....way more direction in W3. I definitely appreciate both!!! Fallout in general is kind of all over the place. Main quest can be forgotten, but you are a wanderer and you spend alot of time wandering...hhhmmmmm maybe that was the point! ;)

Witcher was a mishmash of syfy channel fantasy movies, Fallout is an entire extra life that has interesting stuff in its open areas and real reasons to scavenge and a dog. And some other stuff.

FO FTW.

I've been enjoying FO4 nonstop. Witcher 3 for me had a balanced offering of highs and lows (not a good thing). Sometimes I thought it was great and other times I thought it wasn't so great.

I agree with World:"Fallout is an entire extra life that has interesting stuff in its open areas and real reasons to scavenge":
so true,i like the witcher 3[a lot] but in fallout 4 the exploration is much more interesting then in the witcher 3[the lack of unique items][weapons/armor whatever].

also in fallout 4 you can have your own house[buy it or build it yourself]and put all kinds of collectibles in it[and not only a box where you put all your stuff in,i want to display my collection].I'm a hoarder so i collect also[besides the unique weapons and armor] all kind of other stuff like in fallout 3 all kinds of helmets/nuca cola trucks whatever]and now i'm building me a BIG house:):)

Without a doubt Fallout 4. At my current pace, I may never reach Diamond City.

There is way to much for me, a Minuteman General, Brotherhood Of Steel Initiate, and Settlement founder to do.

Dear god!!! Fallout 4 is crazy. Simple wondering creates its own memorable situations because that adventure is completely different for everyone else. Witcher 3 provides little resemblance to this unpredictable gameplay. Random chest looting isn't fun in W3 at all.

And the crafting...way more enjoyable in fallout. W3 and armor quest hunts were annoying. With 4 sets of Witcher Armor and 4 tiers for each armor set (that needed schematic for gauntlets, boots, pants, and chest for each tier), schematic hunting was plain time consuming with little fun involved. The fact that you have to buy maps to find these schematics is just plain weird. Thank god for the internet. 1 top tier Witcher armor needs 16 upgrades total with rare items. Again, more of a chore than anything. Fallout 4 is a complete different beast because crafting is time consuming, but fun and a very involved process that adds to the fact...you're trying to survive in a wasteland.

its too hard for me to try and quantify and compare these two massive games to know. Once I dig past the idea of trying to compare them on surface level qualities where they appear to intersect and start listening to how the experience makes me feel they're just two different beasts. Sorry but there isn't a definitive best here as far as I'm concerned. The gooey inside of the experience is all that matters. And for me, the gooey inside of FO4 just tasted a lot more compelling.
