PS4 Two-Year Anniversary: System Sales Pass 30 Million

Xbox One may have managed to top PlayStation 4 in October, but Sony's console still holds a big lead.

And PS4 has hit another milestone: Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) announced that PS4 has reached a sell-through number of 30.2 million worldwide. That statistic is as of November 22 and Sony says the system represents "the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history." This would mean it's even tracking ahead of the dominant of PS2, but don't forget the industry is a lot bigger these days. Said SCE President and Global CEO Andrew House:

"We are sincerely grateful that gamers across the globe have continued to choose PS4 as the best place to play since launch two years ago. We are committed to bringing engaging games and entertainment services to users worldwide. Thanks to the support of our partners, PS4 continues to be the premier platform for game and interactive entertainment innovation."

Maybe unsurprisingly, Microsoft has been reluctant to share exact sales numbers for Xbox One this generation, often saying they don't matter as much now. ...a striking contrast to the sales numbers they stuffed down our throats when Xbox 360 was killing PS3 but whatever.

For the record, though, Xbox One appears to be somewhere around the 17 million mark.

Why do we still doubt that the PS4 will repeat the PS2 in its dominance?
I said it when Sony presented PS4 and MS butchered the X1 launch that I smelled a PS2 history in the making.
If Sony manages to shrink it down next year and release it at $299, it's game over for the the X1.
MS could still be relevant enough if it starts giving them out for free as it did with the 360, buy a crappy laptop from Dell and get an X1 completely free. Seriously please take it!!!!

There will be no dominance on a PS2 scale. It's impossible, given the current market.

PS2 sold 155 million units; PS4 will likely not approach that number. And Xbox One alone will sell more units than GameCube and Xbox combined in the PS2 generation.

It's amazing what a solid system and proper pricing can do.

MS don't share them because they are suffering an awful beat, past gen was full of X-Box trolls who always used the sales chart and having superior version of multi-games as their argument card, don't miss them at all.

30.2 million sold thats just insane, theres no way xbox one can catch or over take the ps4, not with all the great exclusives coming next year, BUT does it need exclusives to sell.

Good for Song. It really is a great console despite some of the OS flaws that seem to be getting worked out with each update.

Sony did a 3-peat with the PS1, PS2, & the PS3.

Sony's also well within it's grasp for a miraculous 4-peat.

And in my lifetime hopefully, I want that PS9 gaming sphere levitating within the palms of my hands!!!
