8 PS2 Classics Hit PS4 Today: Trophies, 1080p, Features

When it was announced that Sony would be bringing PS2 games to PS4, PlayStation fans everywhere went wild.

Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration; according to one of our recent polls, most fans were on the fence concerning the new feature, most likely because we didn't know much about it.

We'll know a lot more as of today, though. Even before Sony's keynote address at this weekend's PlayStation Experience event, they decided to announce 8 PS2 classics that will be playable on PS4. When? Now. Today. December 5. The following awesome titles will be ready for sampling in both North America and Europe:

  • Dark Cloud — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
  • Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
  • The Mark of Kri — $14.99
  • Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
  • War of the Monsters — $9.99

Sony confirmed that PaRappa the Rapper 2 and The King of Fighters 2000 will be added a later date. It was also announced that each game has Trophy support, which was "developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game." Lastly, each classic will run in upscaled 1080p graphics and support Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support for game manuals with PS Vita or PS App.

Sorry, but you didn't really believe your PS2 discs would work in the PS4, did you? You had to assume it would be all digital but even so, the addition of Trophies and giving each game full feature support is pretty damn sweet. And that's a fantastic set of games to start with; I love 'em all with the exception of that last one (how did War of the Monsters rate a spot on such a prestigious list, anyway?).

So, what do you think?

I actually just got it this year because a friend of mine loved it. But while turn-based RPGs can age very well, action-based RPGs from yesteryear really don't age well at all...and this one has old problems I just couldn't get past, unfortunately.

I haven't played it in many years but as I recall it's the same as action JRPGs today. That's probably the problem lol.

To be honest, I don't remember very clearly how it played. Just remembered some of the environments, designs, and that I had a blast. I only played it through once, whereas when you play something like FFVII through 10-15 times, you tend to know exactly what's up. lol

Rogue Galaxy definitely holds up. One of the few that do.

Doesn't hold up at all. Because you can't change the camera view, you're always WAY too close to the action, which means you never even see 90 percent of the enemies. That was common in most 3D games in those days but today, it's almost intolerable.

oh yeah that. Press R3 to toggle camera angles/elevation and R2 to reset. The Right stick moves the camera on the field but I dunno if it works in battle. Have fun! :)

Yeah, that doesn't really help, though. It's just so awkward and...old. I think one of my favorite advancements in gaming is the camera customization options we have these days.

Well I tried. I loved the game and much preferred those odd angles to the poopy FFXII field battle camera. Cameras are a great improvement since PS2, I think God of War needs to abandon the fixed camera or just use it in certain areas like devil may cry 4.

Go try to play an old Tomb Raider, it's facking impossible. You can't add together tank controls AND the worst camera in history. How did we ever survive and have fun?

We thought that was the pinnacle of technology. ;)

But even then, I thought the Tomb Raider games has shat cameras. I actually don't remember the camera in FFXII being a problem, but maybe that's because it isn't actually real-time, like Rogue Galaxy. In the latter, you have to run at enemies and attack them with button combos so camera is ultra-critical. In FFXII, once they were targeted, it didn't matter where they were.

I think GoW makes the right choice with it's automated cam.
Kratos is so often found in crazy dramatic large sequences it helps when the game manages the cam for you, even if it lends itself to feeling less at one with the action.

I will say I do prefer DmC, though, with it's standard follow cam over it's prior implementations. Camera angles in older DMC games could be a nightmare and there was little to nothing you could do about it.

Cesar_ser_4,

What? What? What?

Do you really think I was going to back down from your assumingly "smarter and/or holier than thou" comment???

If so, "go fu*k yourself" as some of us old schoolers like to say!

Now that I know there's no real BC & no disc usage,it only equals one big f'ing humongous "PPPFFFFTTTTTT" from me!!!!!

Thanks for the heads up World. That sucks as I had gotten a bunch of PS2 games on PSN for the PS3 when my games got stolen. To have to buy them for a THIRD time sucks. Will just have to pop on my PS3 if I want to play them. I will be on the boycott wagon with you and Biker. Such a shame....

One man boycott here. Just another cash grab.

The only possible benefit is getting Playstation franchises back in the public consciousness to help force sequels to games that should never have stopped dead in their tracks.

While I think there's nothing wrong with Sony re-releasing updated games for a new platform, if these are indeed being internally emulated by the PS4 then they should at least allow you to play the older games on your PS4 without all of the trophies etc.

Seriously, this is what they were talking about when they were talking about "backwards compatibility"??!?

More like robbery, selling old cheap ps2-ports for $10-$15/ea?!?

That's just sad... they could've easily made a software backwards compatible update for PS2 games, like has been available for the PC since the PS3-gen or even before that, but instead they opt for another quick cash-grab...

I wonder will we start getting these as the free games every month as PS+ members?

That wouldn't be a bad idea I think.

Would definitely play Vice City again on PS4. That game was class with much better music!

I can't see myself paying for games I've already bought though.

I freak'n loved War of the Monsters (I actually already own it on PS3). It was great actually. And btw it's no less prestigious than Dark Cloud and the Mark of Kri. All of which hold an 80 on Metacritic, Ben.

Edit: so these are only 1080p UPSCALED?
That blows. Pass. Not paying for these again just for trophy support.

UPDATE. It clearly says on Sony's blog trailer they're "1080p up rendered" so that means not upscaled. Phew.

I also noticed Sony didn't say in the trailer that these were "backwards compatible" offerings. No, just a select set of favorite enhanced ps2 games being brought to PS4.

But they're not the same World. They're actually being internally rendered at 1080p. There's a world of difference between scaling and rendering.

Btw Ben, you should hold a PSXE poll asking what games we want ported to PS4 and then submit the results to Sony.
I'd like to have Ssx and Nightshade upgraded. I also really liked THPS4.

Yea, though I went online to contemplate grabbing a title, but having looked at the screen shots, I have a hard time getting over the drastically dated graphics from the ps2 era. Sure, some games survived okay, like GoW, Metal Gear, and FF, but most look awful now. So flat. So blurry. Drastically barren in detail. Yea, I don't miss any of that. I'd rather have quality 2D games from the era.

Oh well. PS2 was great for its time.

I'm glad Sony added BC for PS2 games but it would have much more better had they included for PS2 disc games sans the upgrades.

Thankfully I kept my PS2 and all my games because I have every game on that list in disc form but for those who may not, buying a game that you once owned even at a reduced price is well rather stupid.

Mark of Kri is a gem of a game that I don't think anyone really played.

This list of games is pretty good for the first batch of games being released.

However I think it is silly they aren't working on letting me actually put my PS2 discs into the system.
