Final Fantasy VII Remake Trailer Arrives, Prompts Reactions

It's big news so I can't really pretend it doesn't exist.

After Sony announced the Final Fantasy VII Remake at E3 earlier this year, many were excited. Then most of us realized that in reality, it would just be an action game featuring FFVII characters.

That's pretty much what you see in the new trailer released during the PlayStation Experience. It shows off some pretty slick cut-scenes along with some gameplay, where Cloud and Barrett take on a few enemies, presumably at the start of the adventure (looks like the start of the game in Midgar, after they get off the train). It might remind you of Final Fantasy XV gameplay; in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the combat mechanics were almost identical.

So anyway, here it is. Previously, I said one way Square Enix could avoid ruining this remake is by simply simply including a turn-based option. Don't see evidence of that here but I suppose you can hold out hope if you like.

People are saying that SquareEnix is not making the FULL FF 7 remake game. They are going to make the game in ...... episodes. Sounds like Bungie and Activision all over again with Destiny. If this is true I will never play another SquareEnix game again.

But I did warn you guys that the original game might be too big to make using current technology.

There was a lot more FFVII soul in that than I would have expected. Still no confirmation on the yay or nay turn-based system, but it looked an awfully lot like Crisis Core. What a day it will be when the remake of Final Fantasy VII is in our hands. It's finally happening.

Nobody around here ever said the remake needed to be turn-based. I said the only way I'd play it is if it had the option, but from a larger standpoint, it should still be an RPG. If it's not role-playing, that would ruin it. Has nothing to do with turn-based or real-time, and I don't really feel like saying this for the hundredth time.

@Ben, still, people around here are thumbing down any comment that doesn't say that they hate the combat.

It looks like Crisis core to me, with a bit of KH2 both of which are action RPGs so I think we're okay.

I did admit im not a long time fan so i can't really argue with the series vets on how it plays.I just though it looked really good, however i would prefer they try to please the hardcore fans cause i sort of understand how it feels to be left out in favor of a broader appeal (looks at DmC).

Honestly as far as turn-based RPGs go...we have PERSONA 5.

The world of Final Fantasy is what counts to me - especially for VII so as long as that's there, the characters, the music, and the presentation of the story - it's all good. I believe in Nomura - and most likely the gameplay will be similar to Kingdom Hearts - which isn't bad at all.

So bring on the thumbs down guys as either way I'm gonna have fun w/ BOTH worlds of an action RPG like FFVII and a turn-based one like PERSONA 5.

While it would have been nice to have the option for both turn-based and the new FFXV-like combat, I'm all in for this. Final Fantasy has been evolving, and this game is a REMAKE, not a REMASTER.

I'll withhold judgement until the final product is released, but I like what I see.

Having a mixture of turn based and real time would have been the safer route similarly to something like Ni No Kuni.

I don't need a crystal ball to predict that this discussion (or should I call it argument?) about the combat will be prevalent in the comments section. There's so much nostalgia surrounding this game that people are passionate about what they believe the game should be like.

One thing is for certain: Square Enix cannot satisfy every single player.

They can't. But I imagine the larger appeal for this franchise is with a newer, younger audience.
When I've looked at comment boards I see roughly two-thirds of posters praising how great the game looks. The other third is from old school fans complaining about the combat.

The better way to go probably would've been making it for the hardcore fans with a dialed back budget. This way the game wouldn't have to change what it is and still pull a profit, even if it was more cheaply produced.

Wait. I've been studying the action. It looks like there might be a hybrid system here. Look at the bottom right of the screen. There's a bar building up with every slash or attack that's made. My knee jerk reaction is that this is just a 'super meter' being charged. I notice though it's NOT discharging with a special attack. Instead the meter stays as a blocked out red.
This may be a "turn-window" where each player has a set amount of actions within a time slice.

I would be happy with that actually.

and to support this theory the same quadrant of the screen also has a dedicated LIMIT bar (far right corner)
Wouldn't this be the bar that should fill to unleash a powerful attack? So what's the mystery bar that's filling up with each attack? Here's hoping it's a time slice meter.

Don't be so so sure. FF games have been on a downward spiral in popularity. And S-E can't bank on the oldschool fans being there to help them out this time either. They've tapped out their faith. Bare in mind, most critics are probably old enough to remember FFVII so they may not be kind to the changes.

I'm intrigued. If it's anything like a beefed up version of crisis core (a well received action square game) then I think I can get on board with this. I do wonder how other parts of the game might be fleshed out. Will it still have a ton of secret locations? How will materia fit in? How will summons fit in? Is knights of the round going to be just as long a summon as it was? Will there still be an abundance of mini games? Then there's the question of how big the locals will be.

One thing that I really do like is that there is already gameplay and real time movement so close to the first reveal trailer. Remember. Square only had missteps with XIII, made a solid XIII-2 and XIII-3 was their only real dud besides the now fixed and oft played FFIV. Don't count them out. Revolutionizing their game is what they've always been about so lets not get so mad when they try to do it.

I agree it may have been used because it was all that could be done, but you're ignoring the possibility that they inadvertently created something that people might love.

It might not fit FFVII remake well, but it has served games like Bravely Default, Valkyria Chronicles, or Ni No Kuni quite well. And while the latter may be a hybrid of sorts, it's still built upon a turnbased foundation.

My point being that while I agree the frequency of turnbased games must decline with the technology we have, I don't see any evidence it doesn't have a place somewhere in the industry.

Bravely Default - Portable game
Valkyria Chronicles - Strategy, similar to FF Tactics and Disgaea and not turn based system
Ni no Kuni - irrelevant sales

Produce games cost money. How many dollars do you think will be invested to produce FFVII remake? Do you really think that a turn based system will sell this game to be profitable? I say no.

I've watched it about 2-3 dozen times now trying to pick up what all the meters mean. It's also worth noting that the trailer doesn't show much other than attack and a special. Which I guess makes sense since that clip is clearly from the start of the game.

But in short, it's basically exactly what I was expecting. I'm not looking for a replacement to the original. I'm looking for a labour of love to honour it. And this looks like it will be, so far.

For me Crisis Core was okay for a portable game that I played in small doses that I never replayed, I obviously enjoyed a lot more my turn based FFVII experience, that said game looks okay and obviously gonna have a ton more to offer than Crisis Core.

Btw the combat in the trailer looked 10 fps and like they are repeating the corridors format, looks like they rushed to show it to the event and I hope that's not gonna be what they are trying to release.

Plus people seems to forgive very easily , remember this it's SE, I lose the thrust to them and making FFVII another of their infamous ARPG for me it's not a good sign.

False. Every Final Fantasy game on PSX was linear in its level design. Always a point a to b with a few exceptions. Namely once you left the towns for the world map. It just looked somewhat more open since all the backgrounds were pre rendered.

That's fair Ben. If you didn't like the combat is Crisis Core then this wouldn't appeal to you.

Turn based was restricting, annoying and boring. People who want it only do so because of nostalgia lol.Name me one benefit of turn based combat in a none strategy game? Zero. It is outdated and should be left in the past with "super deformed midgets".

This is the first FF game that actually looks like it's worth the hype of the overrated franchise since the original which created the hype to begin with.

Ive watched it a few times now and that combat it starting to resemble a turn-based mechanic (yes there are different types of turn-based combat mechanic) where the player gets multiple actions in a turn before the next character's turn.

Of course I could be wrong but hopefully they give us some more info on it. Not as much as Nintendo and Monolith soft are doing with Xenoblade X but mind you but just enough foe us to get a better idea.

Combat is like 80% of the player's involvement in the game. Its actually a big deal when considering the enjoyment.

X has to select the command of course, it's just that nowawdays that will happen right away unless Cloud is out of energy, then you swap to someone else and maybe go to magic and use X to select that spell.

If we get dramatic camera angles for LIMIT breaks I'll be even happier.

Hybrid, yeah, but better than what we thought I think at this early stage.

I expected face buttons and a pause for special moves like Versus XIII.
