Naughty Dog Explains Why Uncharted 4 Is Drake's Final Run

Naughty Dog has already confirmed that Nathan Drake's next adventure will be his last.

But why?

Lead game designer Robert Cogburn tried to explain the reasons behind the team's decision, and why the hotly anticipated Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will be the end for Drake.

As he told Kotaku, the games are "hard to make" and as they always wanted to keep Drake grounded, "it's a challenge to consider how much more we can expand the universe while adhering to those sorts of rules." But beyond that, there are gameplay considerations:

"This is gonna be the fourth time we start answering stuff like, 'How do we make hand-grabs visible? What do we do to scale the combat experience? What are the interesting puzzles we can be introducing in the moment-to-moment as the player's experiencing this narrative?' That's not to say the questions will be the same in games we make going forward, but as a studio we grow tired of answering those same types of questions in the same fiction. It's gonna be fun for us to really embark on new ideas and start fleshing those out [in a new series]."

Cogburn added that The Last Of Us, which boasted very different gameplay mechanics, proved to Naughty Dog that could indeed expand to different systems. Well, we haven't seen anything less than brilliance from this developer for some time, so we believe they can succeed at just about any project they decide to tackle.

By the way, did you try out the multiplayer beta for Uncharted 4? The final game launches on March 18, 2016 exclusively for PS4, if you've forgotten.

They hit on something important there. You can't keep answering the same questions in your work and expect it to not get stale and even offensive to fans.

Essentially with something like Mr. Drake's adventures you either get out on top (as Indiana Jones should have with The Last Crusade) or your work keeps on going until it finally becomes a caricature of itself.

Depending on how it's received, I bet we see U5 by 2019. And I won't complain either.

I wouldn't mind another entry, but I also don't have a problem with them leaving behind the Nathan Drake character. I could get behind a game with a young Sully, or a Chloe spin-off, or something else entirely.

And I also don't mind them leaving the genre for a bit, with the new Tomb Raider franchise being as good as it is

My biggest problem would be them ditching Drake. If they were to do that, then yes leave the franchise alone and move on.

It's good they are thinking this way instead of milking a series for all its worth *cough Ubisoft*. A Crash Bandicoot return would be nice. Like the first 3 games, not the ones that came out after that...

Smart move, go out with a BANG and not put out forced stagnant cookie cutter sequels year after year after year........
