Sony Explains The Difficulty Of Bringing Us Another SOCOM Title

We haven't seen a new SOCOM entry for a while now (I think the last one I played was SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs) and it doesn't look like we'll get another any time soon.

But why? Well, Sony has tried to answer that question.

During a recent PS Nation interview with Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, we learn that while Sony appreciates the "passion and dedication" of the fans, SOCOM isn't an easy franchise to bring back:

"In an online game...you know [everything has] moved on. So much of quality and production values, everything is way, way higher. People have great memories of playing these games many years ago but people’s experiences have moved on as well. So even if they say that they had a great time and they want to experience it again they may not know how much higher their own expectations have become."

Yoshida added that it's a matter of gauging gamer interest by balancing what they're saying against what they actually want to see and play. That's a pretty sound approach, wouldn't you say? In this rapidly moving industry, our expectations change on a frequent basis and what the community accepted and loved before changes constantly.

Do you want another SOCOM? And if so, what would you like to see in the new effort?

Uhm... Ok... So why can't they make SOCOM as good as the competition and meet the expectations?

Socom was never anything like the competition. Nothing like it. I think that's there struggle is it would either become to much like the others and not seperate itself, or it will be too much like it used to be and those who liked it back then - like that article says - don't realise it may no be that eappealing anymore because of the shift in gameplay like CoD and Battlefield.

Socom fans don't want CoD. Socom was built purely on strategy and less run and gun. It's the only online game (early versions) I've played that players strategized and worked together. One of the small but great features was to speak into the headset you had to hold circle. This Eliminated yelling kids, background noise, and prompted involvement.

You couldn't quick scope with sniper rifles, and there was no holding your breathe to keep the scope completely steady in any position. If you wanted that you had to attach a bipod (making your loadout heavier - a negative to twitch players) and go prone and even then it wasn't as steady as today's games.

Not only that but you die, you wait til the next round. These are things that probably wouldn't resonate today. Which brings up the dilemma, because as a fan I want that experience. As a gamer, would I enjoy it the same as I did?

Big, I don't see anything there that couldn't be included in a new release. To stay dead until the next round is a common game mode in many multiplayer games, often called "last man standing" or along those lines.

Unless console gamers all of a sudden has become one homogenous crowd that only want fast paced action games there should be plenty room of more strategic gameplay too.

I don't think you get it. The one thing you said about dying and waiting until the next round is completely different for a game like Socom.

In any last man standing, or search and destroy from CoD the difference is how quick matches are in today's games. Small maps, small number of players, very limited time per match. Socom was opposite, map sizes are typically large, didn't matter game mode - although in later versions you could play a respawn mode - and time limit was longer. Which meant as a player you could potentially wait a while to play again. It was purely based on strategy not get to the other player first. I think Sonys worry is that wouldn't go over well today. I think they are right.

Yeah any of this could be in a new release. My point was I get why Sony worries if it would go over well. If you think the mp crowd hasn't shifted from the type of game Socom was, you apparently havnt noticed how big gmes like CoD and BF are and the most obvious is you havnt played Socom to realise how different it actually is from today's market.

All I'm saying is I get why Sony would worry. They don't want to get to far from what old fans are asking for and want, but also don't know if that would be received well today.

I just think Sony sounds awfully on the defense here. Even if maybe some of the modes were too slow by todays standards - isn't it possible to tweak those modes a little while still keeping the soul of SOCOM?
It's one thing to say a re-release would fail today - another thing altogether to say that it's impossible to make a sequel - a *new* game based on the former games. Cause - again, the properties described by you doesn't seem that hopeless to introduce in todays market, imo.

They tried with Socom 4. That didn't work as planned. It strayed to far from what made fans like Socom. Socom Confrontation was closer and did a lot of things well enough fans could relate but it wasn't received well in the media at all. Furthermore Confrontation also made the mistake of engagement being borderline the focal point. Again not what Socom was about.

I can see why they are worried about another Socom.

The SOCOM's on PSP were pretty damn great so they should give the Vita some love.

I'd like another Socom but I get where they are coming from. I'm not even sure I'd enjoy Socom 2 gameplay as much as I did back then. It was one of a kind but it was as CoD is today.

However I think they should open up some new servers and release Socom 2 for download much like they will other PS2 games. I think that's there best bet. Then they can see the response and adapt with any future release.

I agree, I think they should make a Socom 2 HD remake and put some servers online to see how it does.

If it does well, make a next gen version of the game.

I have so many great memories from Socom 2, it was really one of the best console shooters I have ever played, and I really do prefer my shooters on PC.

Didn't the studio responsible for SOCOM (Zipper Interactive) close down years ago?
So of course it would be difficult to do another one, when the people who did the SOCOM games that had such a fan base and almost "cult following" are no longer around!

Yeah, If I remember right Zipper closed down soon after making MAG in 2010.

I loved the last SOCOM game, played it to death with a couple of the lads from this site. Actually met a couple of them over a previous SOCOM game too. Since military shooters are still a thing, I don't get the reasoning by Sony for not trying to put together another SOCOM. There's a loyal fanbase to the series, if they just put some resources into making it what people want but for a new generation, it will work out. This trend that what came before isn't good enough now, I'll choose an example that might resonate with members on this site, the combat in FFVII, just doesn't make any sense. If people enjoyed a certain style of gameplay before, unless the market is completely saturated by this particular style, then take the risk and embrace what once was instead of cookie cutting the same ol' same ol' every year.

Long story short, there's plenty of room for SOCOM. There's just not the balls to take the risk in using a style of gameplay considered outdated.

Well I want another Socom. I didn't play the online version because I'm all about the single player experience. The AI was pretty good, it wasn't perfect but it was better than most games I've played since then that used AI partners. I'll buy it. Sony can piss me off after the sale if they don't get it right, but I'm willing to shell out the money for a new iteration.

If they're going to keep on the trend that Zipper did with SOCOM 4, I'd rather they keep the franchise in the past. Let the mainstream games do the whole 'accessibility' nonsense.

Speaking of the late Zipper... I would absolutely love to see a second MAG. Even if it's just an upscaling of the original title for PS4, with new servers.

MAG was the best online shooter on the PS3 hands down. I had a lot of fun with that game.

I would love to play another one.

OMG!!!
I thought I was the only one who thought this about MAG??

MAG was absolutely outstanding! It's the game that opened the door to MP online for me. It succeeded in that where games like COD failed.
I played the shit out of it, and have fond, fond memories of matches on it...

I completely agree with Yoshida. His answer is my answer as well.

This is also why I don't go back to watch movies that I have special fond memories for. If I do, I'll likely hate it, given my new knowledge and experience with the world... and that movie's fond memory will be destroyed.
