Killer Is Dead Developer "Relying Heavily" On Unreal Engine 4

The latest iteration of the Unreal Engine is bound to be popular.

One developer that will "heavily rely" on Unreal Engine 4 is Killer is Dead and Lollipop Chainsaw developer Grasshopper Manufacture. Speaking to Joystiq at E3, Grasshopper CEO Goichi Suda (aka Suda 51) confirmed that the studio will make good use of Epic's next-gen engine:

"As a developer, we're heavily relying right now on Unreal Engine 4. That works really well with both systems – or in the sense that we could go either way."

Grasshopper is also working on a new "stylistic action game" that remains unannounced. It's a new multiplatform effort and chances are, it's being prepped for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Unreal Engine 4 will likely be on display in that one, so get ready. This particular engine has had its fair share of detractors over the years, but it remains one of the most popular development tools around.

What does he mean it could go either way?

Anyhow, I'm not as worried about Unreal engine anymore since PS4 is a PC. It should run great.

My guess would be that the engine suits his needs whether they go multiplat or exclusive to either console

yeah I guess that's the only thing that makes any sense, but they've always been multiplat so it's kinda odd.

Yeah that was a really weird sentence. I assume something is lost in translation here.

I think that was a subtle call to Microsoft & Sony to pay for exclusivity.
If not, then they'll go multiplat. They win, either way.

As much as I enjoy Grasshoppers games I wouldn't pay them for exclusivity unless they spent a lot more time on their games. They are fun but very unpolished and a tad shallow, exclusives need to be a step up.

I love the Unreal engine and proudly say so. How could I not, it is the engine that has brought me several of my best gaming moments. The handling in that engine has become embedded into my fingers, it sits right every time.

unreal has always been the daddy of licensed engines, whether for good or for bad.
its really the only engine that has had much limelight for next gen so its a bit unfair to compare it to others which havent been shown off as much.
i mean CE3 is by far the most impressive engine out there but we really havent seen many demos of what it can do given next gen power.
$Es luminous engine really was impressive with their tech demo, but again we havent seen any games running on it.
even crapcoms next gen engine, seen in the deep down trailer released at the ps4 reveal was pretty impressive, but again that was a tech demo and not true gameplay.
UE4 is the only engine that we have seen true games running on it.
o, besides FB3, but to be honest the demo of BF4 was such a disappointment im not even going to bother mentioning it.
thats next gen?
running on a high end PC?

Any word on Havoc's next engine? I hope it won't be as grainy.

Isn't HAVOC just a ragdoll physics engine? I don't think they are a true gaming engine in the likes of Unreal Engine 4 or Frostbite 2.

Maybe someone with a better understanding can elaborate.
