Chances That Final Fantasy XV Will Be A GotY Contender?
There was a time when any new Final Fantasy was an automatic Game of the Year contender. The mere fact that a new entry in that legendary series existed at all made it a contender almost by default.
Those days are long gone now (did any reputable source give any title in the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy a Game of the Year award?) but might they return next year when Final Fantasy XV lands on store shelves?
Square Enix hasn't been shy about keeping us in the loop - despite the ten-year development process dating back to 2006 when the game was called Final Fantasy Versus XIII - and we typically get lots of updates these days. We just got one concerning the planned improvement of the Cross-Link combat system, for example. Some long-time old-school fans aren't pleased with the mechanics they've seen, and they especially didn't like it when the developers described it as a "high-action system." But what are you going to do? It's an action/RPG and that's that; one can only hope the action doesn't dominate the role-playing aspects.
The question is, do you believe Square Enix redeems themselves with FFXV and puts the franchise back on the award-winning track? In short, do you believe the new entry will be the first series installment in a while that's actually deserving of some end-of-year awards? And if so, why?
