PS2 Classics On PS4: How Popular Will This Be, Really?

Yes, PS2 classics have made their way to PS4 (well, a few great titles, anyway), but I just have one question for Sony:

How popular is this new endeavor thus far? Are people really responding in droves?

Sony is definitely serious about seeing this through; they've already asked long-time PlayStation fans for some suggestions. However, most people I know aren't interested in basically buying the same game multiple times; if they bought it for PS2 and the title released as a PS3 classic, this would be the third time they paid for it. Granted, we're only talking about $10 or $15 here but even so, it's a far cry from true backward compatibility; i.e., simply putting the PS2 discs we already own into our PS4s and playing.

I've always thought such a feature would only appeal to those who loved the PS2 generation. I just can't see a lot of younger gamers going back that far just to check things out; most millennials just find such old tech laughable, anyway. But ironically, that seems to be the only group who might respond to this initiative, as they never bought these classics before, so they don't feel as if they're being taken advantage of. Those with big PS2 collections just shrug their shoulders and go, "meh, this is why I still have the PS2 hooked up."

Then again, I think it's feasible that Sony could add numerous PS2 classics I never owned or played, and I might be interested. For example, I hear Fantavision is next on the list and I studiously avoided that one when PS2 launched. Now, I might be intrigued. I just wonder if there are enough of us, and if we'll do it often enough to make this whole thing worthwhile for Sony. What do you think?

P.S. The picture here is for The Mark of Kri and if you missed it - and too many did - way back when, you gotta give it a go. Loved that game. But per my point, I have the disc for PS2 and I won't be paying to download it so I can have it on PS4.

For 9.99 and 14.99 they will not sell squat. Sony put them at this price to see what fish will take the bait. They already know that at 5 bucks a game, the will sell like hot cakes. Which, by the way, the games should be at 5 bucks a piece.

I imagine this stuff won't make up a big chunk of their revenue each year but I'm sure it's a lot like gravy.

There's not a whole lot of effort Sony has to make to emulate each game so their profit margin ought to be high for every title released.

As much as I don't like buying it again, the fact that the emulator works very well gives certain games a fairly big facelift. Dark Cloud looks much better, however Rogue Galaxy only benefits a tad. Still at least I'm paying for an upgrade I can play on my TV. Should the emulator just run our discs? Yes but they want the money and I guess we can't ask for free stuff anymore.

I think it may do better than expected because of a moment I had while playing DC and RG back to back. I was relaxed, and gaming, for a decent period of time. It wasn't super hectic, I got to watch story cut scenes, I laughed, smiled. The twitching center of my brain wasn't activated as almost every game today aims to do.

That means we left behind gameplay that anybody of any age could connect with. Indie titles have proven that when it comes to gameplay people like some dated graphics mean very little.

I've already bought GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. I might get Bully and Batman Begins if they release them.

I see these prices the same as buying tv shows in digital form. You're paying for the effort to bring these games to the console rather than the game itself, which is what Sony will most likely use to justify re-selling the games they recompiled for the PS3. That said, I think if a person were to re-purchase a game they already paid for on the PS3, then that person should get if not for free then at a good discount.

Long answer......

I own 491 PS2 games in my 2000+ games collections(so far) & there's no way in hell that I'd ever re-pay for any game that I already own on disc.

And matter of fact, I'd never pay for a digital PS2 game that I don't own on a disc either.

As a gaming collector, if my PS2 games can't be stacked on a shelf, then I don't want them in a secondary format.

Besides, the cases, cover art, & manuals(if it comes with one) all mean a lot to me & all of my brethren collectors.

Short answer......

OH, HELL NO!

That's the difference between a collector and a gamer. But let's be clear I think you in particular are both.

But to the average consumer, playing the game is what they are paying for. Not being able to stash it on a shelf.

Thanks bigrailer,

Yeah, but in all honesty, I believe that all gaming collectors became so because they were gamers first.

Myself, I started out on a Tandy(old Radio Shack computer) & a Alpha Telstar(4-game Pong styled) console, then worked my way up to those old Intellivision 1 & 2(BurgerTime game FTW), & Colecovision consoles.
I did skip 3 of the Atari systems during those years though.

Oh yeah I agree. The potential for any consuner to become a collector is there. I know at one point I was stashing games away then the PS4 was announced. Didn't take long before they were all sold. Haha.

The word "sold" is a dirty word to us collectors....unless of course we're the ones buying it right when the word sold is said, LOL

I've never traded or sold 1 since I started collecting decades ago(except for having to sell off almost all of my Nintendo collections & my Genesis collection in order to survive after I lost my job during my ex-company's infamous Mothers Day Weekend Massacre at the Taj Mahal Casino in 2011 ah ad used up all my unemployment benefits & 401K plan.

But my heart's still crying out over having to sell off those collections for only $700(plus this biker also having to sell my F-150 pickup & prized Harley for less than $6500).

Mark of Kri is one of my favourite PS2 games. It has just so many awesome gameplay mechanics and the story and the graphics are fantastic.

I would love Sony to revisit this franchise with nicer graphics, still in the same style.

I'm hoping the new Ratchet and clank does well and opens the gates for new cartoony platformers.

I already bought 'Rogue Galaxy' because it's a personal favorite, and its length easily justifies the $15 price point for me. I'd re-purchase the 'Grand Theft Auto' titles, but I'll wait for a sale on those.
Buying old games again doesn't bother me as long as there's something new about it, not just the 'privilege' of playing them on another console. But I admit that there are only a small number of titles I would be willing to pay $15 off the bat for.

I own all of my fave PS2 games already on disc so this is pointless to me.

Considering some of the titles i own, i can't see them being popular enough to even be considered for the emulation treatment.

The Bouncer? Haunting Ground? Primal? Rule of Rose? Resident Evil Outbreak?

Good luck seeing any of these getting upgraded.

I own them too, but it isn't pointless to me due to the visual upgrade, ability to play with a wireless PS4 controller, and not have to mess with getting the PS2 hooked into the already overloaded back of my TV.

World,
Just an FYI,

With all my consoles, I had that same problem with wires & cables, etc, but I was able to find online sites with the right equipment to fix it all, & then I just waited for everything I needed to go on sale.

I now have a 5-way HDMI switcher from eBay($6), a 8-port Ethernet switcher from Monoprice($9),
& three 12-rotating plug surge-protected Belkin Power Strips from Newegg & Buy . com($16.99ea).

I also redid all my consoles color-coded 30-foot Ethernet & 6-foot HDMI cables for easier identification, all from Monoprice too(between $3 to $6 ea).

And I just bought a "wireless" PS2 controller($6.50) & five PS3 colored generic controllers($6.75ea) yesterday from eBay.

FYI, if you want any of those eBay items, I've found that the KongKong & China venders are the cheapest. It will take a lengthy 3-4 weeks to get to you but at least you'll get the cheapest price right from the source & almost all of them will ship free to you.

Just let me know what you need & I'll check around for the cheapest price for you

I thought of doing all that, even got an HDMI switcher. It's just too much work. Easier to leave a few consoles hooked up and then spend the money on better versions of the games.

Ha World, if this lower-than-low, low tech guy could do it, it should be a breeze for you.

And I'm as cheap as I can be just so I can continue to buy more & more games.
So in all total so far, I've paid less than one retail game to get the 14-console set-up I'm running now. And if I can find more 3-tier console-stackers and another old retro 8 port AV switcher, I'll probably add another 7 consoles in line with all the ones I'm running now.
Hell, I've used up so much room that all I have left is air space & I now have to build upward like a freaking skyscraper(hence needing more of those 3-tier console stackers).

This time, I don't give two shats one way or another. I can't believe how good some games look in 1080p. And Rogue Galaxy was so ahead of its time, its crazy how well it aged. Vice City's gameplay is still...questionable but its kinda cool being able to see it in its virtual crystal clear form.

Release more I say. This entire thing is not only good for nostalgia, but there are so many ps2 games I would love to play, and finish. I'm holding out for Battlefront 2, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, and the Onimusha series.

They just have to put up games i'm interested in if they want my money & support. Most of the games i'd look forward too will most likely never be released so they probably won't get much from me.

Here's my speal about this. Even as an avid gamer during the PS2 generation I missed out on a ton of games. Same can be said during PS3 generation - in fact I'm playing through the Batman games on PSNOW and just finished Bioshock infinite. So I love what Sony is doing in those two regards.

I'm actually saving money for a better product. I never purchased those PS2 games back then and I potentially can now for a far lower price on a fantastic console.

For those who don't want to purchase the game 2 or even 3 times because you have the disc at home. Simple answer don't. This isn't aimed at just you.

bigrailer,

FYI, If you don't already, always check eBay first.

I've bought about 75-80 games in mint condition for around $5 to $7.50 each, with only 3 misleading-description sellers(which eBay refunded back into my account).

Just make sure to check for free shipping first.
But if not, then always double-check how much the shipping charge is, as there are some low-than-life scumbag sellers that post their price super but skyrocket their shipping cost to make up for that super-low priced item.

I won't buy games I have on my PS2 which I still have and the games as well so unless Sony down the road includes true BC that allows for PS2 disc games to be played, I'll skip playing PS2 digital games on my PS4.
