Do Hardcore JRPG Fans Even Care About Final Fantasy Anymore?

It has been Square Enix's goal for years: Get as many Western gamers interested in their products as possible.

It's why they snagged Eidos and why so many titles they publish today are of great interest to the Western crowd. But they've also been "Westernizing" Final Fantasy, at least to some extent.

There's no doubt that the upcoming Final Fantasy XV shows evidence of a development team that hopes to cater to both Japanese and Western gamers. The old-school JRPG anime influence has been toned down and altered significantly, and the style of gameplay should also appeal more to those who like standard action/adventure games. In other words, the hardcore JRPG aficionado may not care much about FFXV.

I mean, this person is far more likely to be interested in the likes of Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom and Star Ocean 5, right? And of the long-running JRPG series, there are multiple installments in the Atelier, Tales and Ys franchises that typically appeal to this niche crowd. I'm starting to wonder if that crowd has long since started to ignore Final Fantasy ever since hearing the details of FFXV. Are they?

Don't forget that gamers who live in Japan have been losing faith in FF over the years as well; the last few FF installments haven't fared particularly well in any region. And yet, a few of these JRPGs really seem to be going strong and I think I know why...it's because they actually feel like JRPGs.

I know I do. Say what you will, but I still believe Final Fantasy to be one of the greatest JRPG series of all time. Some are different, yes, but that's what makes it the best. Times change and it has kept up very well in my opinion.

I don't think anyone is denying that Final Fantasy is one of the greatest (in my opinion THE greatest) JRPG series. But are you really going to deny the mediocre entries in the series over the last decade?

Also the variety of gameplay wouldn't be a selling point if it also wasn't great gameplay. Something that the FFXIII series has made abundantly clear. Different isn't enough, it has to be a quality experience.

Times do change and SE has made it clear they wish to remove the RPG elements that EVERY Final Fantasy title has had prior to FFXIII. Sadly it's become just another button mashing action game with a huge production value. I look forward to the soundtrack, that's about it at this point.

I consider myself a core FF fan. I think I qualify having completed FFIV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, and XIII. I'd say FFVI is probably my favorite of the bunch.

I've also spent a good amount of time with the original game and also FFXI.

I'm a fan enough to have downloaded the FFVII DLC pack for Smash Bros on Wii U. It is freak'n sweet! You all should be jealous.

And I can say I do absolutely still care about the series. I'm personally less concerned about FF trying to return to an old outdated combat formula but instead something that feels high quality and trading blows with Witcher 3, Dragon Age, The Elder Scrolls, and Fallout etc.

It's really the only jRPG franchise I expect that from. Whereas other's like the Xeno series is still way behind the times in production values.
I've been playing Xenoblade X (just last night actually) and it does feel refreshing playing a jRPG again on a modern console. But there is a whole lot about it's presentation that feels stuck in the PS2'ish era. The game though, at it's core, shows tons of potential in the character development and combat department and I'm excited to play more. Oh and the music is an inconsistent mess. Which sucks because I usually love jRPG music.

This is my biggest issue with Final Fantasy over the last decade. The production value hasn't changed. The quality wrapper I've grown to expect from SE is still there. But the product isn't. If I want to play any of the games you listed I'll play those games. What separates Final Fantasy if it loses its own identity and just attempts to mimic other franchises?

What really pisses me off is it's not like SE saw dwindling sales and this was a last ditch effort. This was a company choosing to completely change what made Final Fantasy just because.

And the additional customer base that they've gained by going multiplat and by changing the gameplay formula starting with XIII has paled in comparison to the loss of longtime fans.

Yea, the soundtrack is all over the place. While Anthrax may have believed they could make Rap and Metal mix, they were wrong and so is Xenoblade X.
To be fair it's not all Metal-Rap with some songs sounding decent and may have their moments but it is overly disappointing.

I can add you to my Wii U friends. What's your user name?
Though I suck at the game as I'm still learning how it works. I also don't know when I'll start playing it online because I'm swamped with games to play.

oh. and for the record. Xenoblade X ISN'T entirely voice dubbed. You do have to still read dialogue from people, like in the city etc.

This is why I'm looking forward to Persona 5 more now after seeing the game play for FFVII Remake. I had never heard of the Persona series until I played number 4 on my Vita and it was great!

Would it be crazy to believe World of Final Fantasy will sell better then FFXV? With he cute chibi style of what feels and plays like a Square Soft FF game. Maybe in Japan but I'm defiantly looking forward to that more.

I'd definitely get FFXV that's for sure, but not because it's FF, but because the game actually looks good.
It's no longer JRPG so I'll just think of it as another action game with only a teaspoon of JRPG element in it.
I want JRPG I go with Star Ocean or Persona, hell, even Hyperdimension Neptunia.
Gone is the day when JRPGs are GOTY materials, but that's ok, you love JRPG, you won't care.

Speaking of JRPG, there's this game called Omega Quintet which feature turn-based combat.
For anyone who has played it, is it good?

I thought it was great, very polished and deep gameplay however if you don't like the Neptunia humor and sillyness than I don't recommended.

It seems here just because of the combat alone in FFXV, the game automatically isn't a jrpg? Also, to me final fantasy was never really too much of an anime influence like most jrpgs, so that doesn't really change with me. They've always been designed with realistic facial features who even look western a lot of times.

So taking those two elements out, can't it still be a jrpg? It still has side quests, monster huntings, grinding, dungeons, weapons, magic, summoning, exploring, and more importantly a story reflecting crystals and world peace out whatever? If we're talking about final fantasy xiii, I'd understand add that game took out many rpg elements, but FFXV is shaping up to be a complete jrpg experience in my eyes. Those who don't are probably adamant about the battle system being much more real time than previous FF entries. Seriously, look past the real time battle system and see how much more FFXV is as an rpg game.

I've played witcher 3, and I see here that many enjoy that game as a rpg. From what I experience, FFXV has the better, more in depth battle system. Why wouldn't we be able to enjoy FFXV, if we enjoyed the witcher?
