Tomb Raider Creative Director: You Don't Want Only Action

It's true: Action on top of action really does tend to get boring.

Perhaps that's why so many have gravitated toward the Tomb Raider games over the years, especially the most recent installments from developer Crystal Dynamics. These adventures had multiple gameplay elements, which kept them interesting throughout.

And Creative Director Noah Hughes believes this is key. In speaking to Game Informer, Hughes cited the variety and diversity of a production like Rise of the Tomb Raider:

If we gave you action upon action, it would get old and redundant. Part of what we really celebrate in our design aesthetic is pacing and the variation of pacing. This is where I feel blessed working with a character like Lara and a franchise like Tomb Raider, because we have all these different facets of traversal, platforming, combat, puzzle-solving, and resourcefulness that we can essentially commit to always giving you something fresh before you’re bored of what you’re doing now."

Hughes added that the result is a veritable roller-coaster, boasting "high highs and these intimate lows." And he says this variety and "breadth of experience" was a driving force behind the team's motivation. Rise of the Tomb Raider fared very well with critics, but that acclaim didn't translate to sales records. In fact, one could argue the game didn't sell that great at all.

Of course, as it was a timed console exclusive for Xbox One, it didn't have the benefit of those 30+ million PS4s out there. Can't wait for the Definitive Edition (or whatever they end up calling it) to show up for PS4 next holiday!

There's really no argument. The game isn't selling well.

I'm not sure how it will do once it reaches PS4 consumers but I imagine it won't be as well as it could have. I lost some interest the moment I heard it was timed exclusive. And ive lost even more interest as time has gone on.

I'm not sure what that means for the franchise... or those who made the decision to do times exclusivity.

Well, I'd say the people who decided to make it timed-exclusive are brain-dead idiots but at the same time prior to the deal those people were more well off than I am financially and it's a safe bet they made out even nicer after the deal. They are scumbags though for what I believe has effectively killed the franchise. Really what incentive is there for PS4 owners to buy the game next year? Even if Sony doesn't have an exclusive lined up there will still be another Assassin's Creed, another Call of Duty, which no matter what anybody says those games will sell. There's likely to be some other games we don't know about yet. And of course there's the games that come out earlier. Not everybody is going to buy Street Fighter V, Ratchet & Clank, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided or even Uncharted 4 on day one.

Yep...they hung themselves. I've already forgotten about this game which is sad because I loved the first remake, but no ps4 membership means no interest

Gamer46 -
You are right. There isn't any reason to wait in anticipation for this game as a PS4 owner. More so there's really no reason to look forward to it at all. There's so many great games coming next year, I could care less about it.

Which brings me to your point FM23, the only thing that keeps this game hanging around, is Ben's articles about it.

Considering the story of Rise was completely stupid, and ending on a cliffhanger, I would hope they would give more bang for your buck. I should have waited until it released on ps4 but I did play through the game on a friends xbox and godamn is the game subpar. Its like playing the prequel to Tomb Raider 2013. It was pretty awkward.

One glaring flaw is that its all so convinient. And uninteresting while things that do have some kind of interesting aspect to them aren't developed enough. I'm just annoyed by all the convinient moments in the game. Especially when most of the time nothing makes sense, and only because it was made that way so Lara could do something. Why did the bad guy not shoot his hostages when they were right there? So Lara could save/escape.

In Uncharted, whenever Drake was captured, it was so the baddies could taunt him, and obviously with Drakes luck he'd get out of the situation. Lara in Rise has no such luck, so much as she has the ability of game developer power. The gameplay was good but the story was extremely lacking and very dissapointing. And Palpatine making an appearance at the end was the worst part. Cliffhangers are BAD.

And finally, in a game called Fking TOMB RAIDER, I would expect there to be a TOMB to be RAIDED. Optional tombs are BS and designed for those with an IQ of 75.

I'll still buy it next year though. Here's hoping everything is at least somewhat touched upon. If not, eh. Uncharted 4 will blow it out of the water no matter what.

Don't care what you have to say until it comes to the real system.

I wonder if they'll ever talk about how much fail it was to go exclusive on the losing platform (from a playerbase and marketing perspective) ...
