Final Fantasy XV Story Influences Include The Last Of Us
You might not have seen this coming.
Typically, Japanese plots, especially in JRPGs, are a good deal different than the storylines we see in western-developed games. The characters, themes, styling, plot points, etc.; it's all very different.
But as Square Enix has wanted to "westernize" Final Fantasy for years, perhaps it's no surprise to hear they took some storytelling cues from one of the west's premier developers: Naughty Dog.
According to a recent Examiner interview with Final Fantasy XV game director Hajime Tabata, the FFXV team says the story is at least partially inspired by The Last Of Us. Tabata spoke about the evolution of the main character, Noctis, and how he must rise from a prince to a king. Tabata says this character is "growing and developing as a person" throughout the adventure, and there's also a distinct father-son angle, too. Furthermore, Tabata referenced the "unforced" way the story is told in TLoU:
"It's important that the story progresses through the gameplay in a very unforced way, in a similar way that it was done with The Last of Us, for example."
More FFXV info will show up this month thanks to the return of the Active Time Report. Maybe they'll give us an idea of the game's final launch date...?
