Report: VR Takes Off In 2016, PlayStation VR Sells 1.9 Million

It will be the year of virtual reality entertainment, if a new report is any indication.

We know VR devices like Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR and HTC Vive are all being prepped for release in 2016 and according to a Superdata analysis (via IGN), Sony's device will sell nearly 2 million units.

Superdata believes Europe will lead the VR charge with $1.9 billion in overall sales, while North America will be in the runner-up position, spending $1.5 billion. Asia will invest $1.1 billion and the rest of the world will put up a little over a half billion, bringing the projected spending total to over $5 billion in 2016. That's a drastic increase from the $660 million in 2015 but of course, none of these VR devices were available last year.

Concerning sales for specific models, the report predicts the "light" mobile VR experiences, like Google Cardboard, will be far and away the most popular, selling a combined 27.1 million units. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are expected to move 6.6 million units combined, and Sony's PlayStation VR will sell 1.9 million. We still don't know the price of the latter device yet, but they've just announced the price of Oculus Rift: $600. PlayStation VR might actually be a little cheaper, as Sony has previously said to expect a price tag similar to that of a new gaming console.

Everyone excited to try out VR in 2016?

X years from now we're going to look back at these VR headsets and wonder what we were thinking.

I'll wait for the technology to improve and for the sizes of these gadgets to get smaller before I jump in.

I am on the fence and the implementation of this device with Ace Combat 07 will decide if I purchase or not.

Same here. If it turns out to be a good experience (along with Gran Turismo), I will definitely be buying one. If only for the 'fresh experience'. I don't believe the 1st generation of these devices represent the fullest potential of VR, though.

Wow. A $350 graphics card is minimum.

Companies seem to think customers are loaded with endless cash and can buy any product at will if they think those prices will fly.
