PlayStation Music: 11 Million Downloads, Top 10 In 2015

Early in 2015, PlayStation's Music Unlimited app disappeared and was replaced by anew PlayStation Music app, powered by Spotify.

Now, Sony says the music service is a huge success since its launch on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 last March.

According to a post over at the PlayStation Blog, Spotify is now one of the most downloaded apps in PlayStation history, as the download total is nearing 11 million. So far, users have listened to over 190 million hours and PSN senior vice president Eric Lempel said they're "thrilled to see this level of engagement from the PlayStation community for a music experience all of us here are passionate about."

Sony also listed the top 10 most popular PlayStation Music songs from 2015:

  • "679 (feat. Remy Boyz)" — Fetty Wap
  • "Know Yourself" — Drake
  • "Nasty Freestyle" — T-Wayne
  • "See You Again (feat. Charlie Puth)" — Wiz Khalifa
  • "Hotline Bling" — Drake
  • "Trap Queen" — Fetty Wap
  • "Watch Me (Whip / Nae Nae)" — Silentó
  • "Post To Be (feat. Chris Brown & Jhene Aiko)" — Omarion
  • "B**** Better Have My Money" — Rihanna
  • "The Hills" — The Weeknd

I must be old because I don't recognize anything on there, but whatever.

What do you listen to, Ben? A lot of those artists were very popular in 2015. Sure songs like ""Watch Me (Whip / Nae Nae)" — Silentó" make my ears bleed but what I can say? The radio plays it over and over and people will eventually like it.

Sorry, I'm mostly just listening to classical these days, with a little rock thrown in.

Ditto. My guess: rap, rap, and more rap... that's all kids listen to nowadays apparently...

Yes, almost exclusively. You could cover the whole thing just by expanding it to "R&B".

I think there's a few other things at play, now that I think about it. If you like R&B you DEFINITELY listen to those top 10 songs more than anything. Whereas if you like another genre like Rock, alternative, or otherwise, the selection of popular artists are so vast and expansive it'd be hard to have a top 10 most played since the variety lends itself to different fans of genres NOT R&B to have any number of favorite bands be completely different from another's playlist.

I know there's the unheard of R&B artists that the purists use as examples of good artistry we don't consider, but most people don't pay attention to that. And they don't in the rock or alternative areas either... I'm just saying that the vast variety of well-known artists make it difficult to pin down a "most popular" title outside of R&B, unless you produce a megahit like Imagine Dragons did 2 years ago.

As for me, I've been lately back into my old Velvet Revolver and Stone Temple Pilot stuff after Scott Weiland's death. I've also got some Daft Punk, Modest Mouse, RHCP, Black Keys, and the Night Sweats on my playlist this week (I love the song S.O.B. right now. Heard it on the radio sometime before Christmas). I imagine with Guns and Roses coming back together, I'll probably listen to a bunch of their stuff next week.

Rap is dead. They have this garbage that they put the rap and hip hop names on but they aren't what they say they are.

@Ben Dutka:

haha. I laughed on the last sentence on your article. same here, I don't recognized the songs that were listed on your article except for "Watch me". Well, I don't use my ps4 to play music but it's good to see that a lot of people use the spotify app on their ps4.

The ONLY reason I've heard of "Watch Me" and "B**** Where's My Money" is because of the Jimmy Fallon vs. Ellen Degeneras lip sync battle.

That might qualify me as old.

At 63, there's nothing there that's known by me either.
And I highly dislike most rap & hip-hop.

Besides rock, hard rock, blues, electronica, the older R&B tunes & the old 80's disc, I'm now highly into the great Lindsey Stirling, who's not only a cosplayer, but a dancer, singer, & one of the greatest violinists there is out there now, IMO.

Just give your eardrums a treat Young Grasshoppers, by listening to a few of her instrumentals

I know Lindsey Stirling. She's fantastic.

She's done some stuff with an a Capella group called "Pentatonix". I don't like all they do, but they tend to cover some of the modern popular stuff WAY better than the original artists do.

Those were really cool, thanks for the links BikerSaint!

If you like violinists I can also really recommend checking out Lucia Micarelli, super talented violinist. She has an album called Music From a Farther Room as well.

She has a great cover of Bohemian Rhapsody there's a video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_-7yfBrgeM
