Could Ratchet & Clank PS4 Be Considered For Game Of The Year?

Generally, remakes and remasters aren't supposed to be in the running for any Game of the Year awards. After all, they originally released way back when.

However, should we make an exception in regards to the upcoming Ratchet and Clank on PlayStation 4?

Developer Insomniac has rebuilt this game from the ground up specifically for Sony's new console, and they're adding a ton of stuff, too. They've already confirmed that the majority of the arsenal will actually boast all-new weapons, and there will be lots of new areas to explore as well. Factor in those gorgeous new visuals and nobody would be surprised if this game felt brand spankin' new. Furthermore, if you consider that we really haven't seen an action/platformer like this in a long time, perhaps it really should be in the running for end-of-year honors.

Of course, this leads to another obvious question: Even updated, can R&C stand toe-to-toe with modern creations? Even with all the improvements and additions, will it still feel dated? Or, if not exactly dated, will it simply fail to compete with the likes of games designed specifically for a modern audience using modern hardware? Sometimes I wonder how people would react to this game if it wasn't a remake. If someone had never heard of the series and was shown R&C for PS4, would they say it looks or feels old? I doubt it. In fact, I think they'd probably be pretty impressed and they might even call it "unique." Because, in today's gaming world, it kinda is.

The re-imagined Ratchet and Clank launches exclusively for PlayStation 4 on April 12.

Never played a Rachet & Clank before but I will most definetly play this one. However the thing that actually worries me is the price. Why is a new, supposed full triple A game cost $40 at launch? does it not have enough content to justify full price?will that be used to dismiss it from goty talks?

I don't know about giving an older game, no matter how much it's been modernized & added-on to, a new GOTY when it comes out a 2nd time.

I can see it turning into a slippery slope, where everyone who puts their game out a second time with maybe just a little tweak's worth of, improvement will be clamoring to have their game put up as a GOTY contender too, but that's just me.

I agree! And like you said i could see the slippery slope turning into an avalanche of reasons why "X game" could be nominated for game of the year.

Just like the Uncharted Collection in that $299.99 bundle I recently got.

I was shocked to find out that all 3 games that were supposed to be included were only chopped-up 1/2 images of themselves.
All 3 games are all "single player only campaigns" with all the multiplayer ripped right out of all 3 games.

And another thing, right on the front of the PS4 bundle's box, it states in big bold print "Includes 3 HIT GAMES remastered for the PS4", but then in real small print at the bottom it states "single-player campaigns for all 3 games".

And nowhere on the game's cover art does it proudly & boldly say "REMASTERED" at all.
Now, every developer that has re-mastered their game for re-release, they shout it out load & clear for everyone to know, by plastering it either on the front or back cover art somewhere in big bold letters.
Something smells a little bit fishy to me with ND not doing that, as just making it work for a new gen system does "not" mean "remastered", at least by the standards we as gamers have all become accustomed to.

I love Sony & Naughty Dog, but I think one or both companies have f*cked the gamers by doing this.

And FYI, I may not play MP modes, but it still stinks for those who do & expected to be able to on their PS4's.
Plus, since I'm a collector, I was expecting a full 3 un-cut games, hence the word "collection" in the Uncharted "Collection", not 3 chopped up, watered down, 1/2 gimped games with out balls.
And if those games were horses at the race track, \all 3 of them would be called "geldings".

I surely hope this sour incident is not going to turn out be the f'ing new wave of the future!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Rant over)!

Never played this one so I'm all for it. I would be okay with it getting GOTY should it be worthy too.

I would have rather seen them put this much effort towards something new. But, I'm also happy to get to play it. I just hope it looks better than Knack. That game blew me away in the regard and I want to see the next one up.

It won't compete with Unchartered 4. That and as already been pointed out its still a remake of an old game.

That upcoming VR game, "Robinson" could well be a huge sleeper hit.

And this years FarCry: Primal should be in the running too.

Man, I know I want to ride the Wooly Mammoths when I'm not eating them, command the Sabertooth Tiger by my side, see through the eyes of a high soaring Owl, plus have all sorts of other wildlife to do my bidding, attacking the enemy, watching out for danger for me, & alerting me to things going on in my surrounding.

It's going to be a great year to be a gamer.

As much as I love R&C, I never consider it to be a GOTY kind of game.
R&C is is fun and awesome, but it's not something that's jaw-dropping.

While we're on the subject of old classics being brought back to re-mastered life, I'd love to see a updated & fully re-mastered "Crash Bandicoot" collection.

And then, also bring back more of those insanely lovable Crash commercials too!!!
