I'll make this short and sweet:

I'm going to be involved in more projects in 2016 and the amount of time I can dedicate to PSXE is wearing thin. I'll still be doing stuff (major news, important reviews, etc.) but I'm opening the doors to volunteer writers and contributors.

Yes, it's only volunteer but there's a positive caveat: If you produce enough content in a month that results in a visible up-tick in traffic, thereby adding to the ad revenue, I can maybe toss you some money. Not much, mind you, but you'll be rewarded if the site does indeed see more activity due to your efforts. Otherwise, this might be perfect for college students looking to gain some experience in the fields of video game journalism and/or general digital content creation. And the best part is, you have free reign...mostly.

Feel free to put up whatever you like; here's just a brief list of possibilities:

  • News (particularly daily news you find interesting)
  • Hands-on previews (via beta tests, for instance)
  • Reviews
  • Editorials
  • "Listicles" ("Top 10," "8 Reason to...")
  • Just about anything PlayStation-related

Our system is old but easy; putting up content isn't difficult at all, though you will receive some basic instruction concerning meta keywords and images. If you have basic HTML and SEO knowledge, all the better. As for writing ability, you don't have to be fantastic but you do have to produce publish-quality pieces. It isn't hard; just look at the stuff that normally goes up on a daily basis.

If you're interested, drop me a line at bdutka[at]psxextreme.com and I'll give you the details. I doubt I'll turn many away and in fact, I'm hoping to get multiple volunteers. PSXE does need more voices and at the very least, we'll get that. :)

Well, I'm no good at writing, but I'll keep sending you articles, so hopefully it will take some of the burden off of you in having to find so many.

I'd love to cover GT news, big and small but I'm not sure it warrants enough interest here. There were many missing pieces of news regarding the GT stuff that I thought were worthy of mentioning.

Go right ahead. GT is big on PlayStation, of course. Let me know if you'd like to do it.

What happened to the contributors from the last time the site put out this request?

I see World is still contributing in the comments and he was involved in the GOTY awards 2014 but we haven't seen anything of the other people who stepped up?

I'd put my name forward if I thought it would be taken seriously. Also not sure if I'd have the time to be considered reliable.

I think I did one article. :)
I can only speak on behalf of myself, but for me there were several factors.

But the main factor is that I missed a sense of belonging to any editorial crew, no sense of internal community or internal communication, tasks or responsibility. This was more or less just "a free blog to post stuff".

A staff, being it of volunteers or paid, needs nurture to be built and established. To just be handed the keys and be like "here you go, now post if you feel like it" isn't much of a motivation.
But if this sounds ok with you then go ahead of course. Just know what you go to. :)

And just to be clear: This isn't really a criticism to Ben, he's just one guy over all these years and gotta be insanely ridiculously tired of this site now, but I can't understand how the supposed owners seem to totally have abandoned this project years ago.

I'm neither going to apply as a contributor or criticize Ben. I was just wondering how it had played out for the previous contributors and why we didn't really hear of them again. Other than yourself and World, I don't even know who the other contributors were or if they even have one article to their names.

I really enjoyed it, getting the comments from my friends and enemies, the exposure as a writer. With Ben's help I got real busy working at an elementary school with children and also volunteer mentoring, plus helping another gaming site. But that other site isn't offering any cashola at all. So....

Beam: If you've had any experience with this, you'd know that giving volunteer writers assignments and having them attend virtual meetings and abide by an editorial calendar, the stuff digital content providers typically do, is basically impossible. They're not getting paid; they have zero incentive to act as employees.

The only way you get anybody to do anything is if you give them freedom in terms of when and how much. If you really believe unpaid people will respond to me as they would to a boss, you're living in some very Disney-esque fantasy world that I wish existed. ;)

That all being said, if someone actually wants to contribute and would prefer this method (assignments, deadlines, etc.), by all means, tell me. I've got no problem doing that.

P.S. As an example, look at Buzzfeed. Anybody can sign up and post whatever they want and it's a huge content boon for them. Does anyone really think they'd get 1/1000th the stuff if there was a team handing out assignments? And by the way, the internal resources necessary to do that in the first place is a massive expense (not that Buzzfeed couldn't afford it, but you know what I mean).

It's obviously a very different beast than this, but I used to be a volunteer coordinator as one role in a job I had 4-5 years ago. They have to be treated very differently from employees if you hope to retain them.

Well Ben, obviously your way didn't pan out well either, so a little humble on your behalf on my feedback would suit you.

Actually I do have experience with this. I ran a site for eleven years that typically counted around eight regular (weekly) and ten "freelance" (monthly) contributors, whom none received any money the first 6-7 years, and most never did. There were other reasons why they put in all that time and effort over so many years. (there were a certain turnover over the years too, of course)

It's all about creating an atmosphere for cooperation, offering a platform where motivation is nourished.

What I expected was that there would be some sort of channel for internal communication. It was me who asked for a special forum for us to be created, and it was. But it needs to be followed up. None seemed really interested in creating a staff atmosphere. Heck, the other two-three we never heard a single word from. That's what you get from just handing out a key, Ben.

I'm not talking about one boss telling everyone what to do and handing out assignments (dude - what decade are you from? That's horrible leadership), but establish a platform where plans are made and discussions to be had. Constructive feedback. Maybe someone have an idea for an article, another one have a great input for that idea, etc. Get enthusiasm going. Not be a "boss" - be a motivator! Bring the best out of everyone. That's leadership, especially in this context.

A platform for communication and cooperation. A platform where people get to know each other better, and form informal bonds not only to the staff but to the entire site.
That's the clue to get a group to work well together.

And that takes a *lot* of time. It's a full time job where you yourself don't have much time to write any more, but where in return one get a handful of dedicated writers who in summary offers a much better product than you alone could do, regardless of ones own writing skills.

Thank you, but I didn't really need the lecture. I'm leading teams of writers elsewhere and I'm doing just fine. Building motivation and interest is essential but you seem to be missing the point. You said it in the last paragraph: It takes a LOT of time. Time I don't have.

I specifically said above that I don't have much time to dedicate to PSXE anymore, so why would you offer an idea that requires MORE of my time?

And by the way, assignments is not from any particular decade. It's how the working world operates. It's what you get if you work anywhere on the planet; it's what I got working for newspapers, it's what I'm tasked with delivering on a daily basis to teams. Everyone sitting around chatting is all very "kumbayah" but it never results in any real progress. Generally just a bunch of people blathering about what they like, and nothing actually getting done.

"It takes a lot of time"

Which is why a big portion of my day at my last job spent on volunteer coordination. The agency felt it made sense to PAY me to coordinate volunteers.

Great initiative and very needed, but this site really needs a total overhaul beyond the article contributors. Updated design, more and better features, the whole works. And they should do it now, while there's still something left to rescue.

+ and if Ben is interested I know someone that does web designing as a career in a very professional manner. He charges much less than others.

I will agree the content of the articles are good but as the years go by websites need to look refreshed and updated. Same thing with people -- we don't have one style/haircut for ever.

I'm aware of this, Beam. But that kind of thing costs money that we just don't have...unless of course you know someone who's willing to do that stuff for free.

If, however, we get a bunch of people to contribute and this place has some new life, I might be able to personally fund some changes.

And the webmaster really needs to up his game & fix that damned counter on the comments because it's beginning to become a royal pain in the ass when I want to go back & check on the extra comments that the counter says is there, but there actually aren't any new comments posted at all.

I just hate wasting my time for nothing.

I'm a little torn on this, my ego says that I could probably right something and help generate traffic, which if Ben may pay in American dollars, that would be like winning the powerball here in Canada. My mind however is asking me when I would have time to contribute, I barely have time to play the few games I have now. This site does need a boost of something though, we used to light up this comments section every day, and the traffic seems to be dwindling. I'm guilty of this too, I've been reading the articles here and there, but have been mostly lurking in the shadows instead of posting here or in the forums, which is crickets ville now. I guess the other side of that, is that Ben doesn't have to threaten to ban anyone or close a thread on a daily basis anymore. Lol. Maybe whoever steps up should write a piece called, "Religion, politics, guns and video games: Can they co-exist or are we all infidels and heathens" and see what happens...

To be honest I still read Ben's reviews on games as they generally guide me to make a purchase or not. Sometimes I do and if I don't like the game I trade it.

It must be hard as Ben is one person. He does have John Shepherd who helps out too. Maybe fresh blood would help.

@World and Chinnook I enjoyed the stories you guys posted about Fallout 3 with the guys travelling the wastes etc in the forums.
