The Witness Is A Problem For The Color-Blind And The Deaf

Who would've thought such a seemingly inoffensive puzzle game could cause so many issues?

Braid designer Jonathan Blow's new puzzler The Witness is a critical success but it has proven difficult to play for a lot of people.

First are gamers complaining of motion sickness, due possibly to the FOV (Field of Vision) or the bright colors. Now, we're hearing that those with color blindness and hearing impairment will also encounter some problems: As reported by Kotaku, some players are having trouble differentiating between colors in certain puzzles. Editor Stephen Totilo Tweeted out an image, asking if color-blind individuals would have an issue, and the AbleGamers Charity Tweeted back a GIF that showed what the puzzle would look like for those with Protanopia.

Now, The Witness doesn't offer a colorblind option but the puzzles in question are optional. And Blow told Kotaku that unfortunately, there isn't much the team can do to deal with the color-blindness/hearing impaired problem:

"The approach instead was to ensure the game did not require you to complete any particular area to get to the end. Color blindness is only an issue with a fraction of the puzzles in the game, and our design focuses these puzzles in a small number of areas, so the workaround is just to skip those areas."

Geez. Well, the game is good, at any rate. Look for our review in less than 24 hours.

Not good when the best advise you can offer is to just skip an area.

I'll wait for the game to be free on PS Plus.

As will I now too, seeing that even a flash sale is going to be too much $ for all it's problems.

Hell, what Blow suggests in skipping certain areas is like Anti-Vision asking us to skip firing even a single shot in all of their COD games.

What Blow needs to do to keep his credibility going, is to consult with some deaf, colorblind, & motion-sickness experts so he can fix his too-high priced $40 game ASAP.

I agree, what were they thinking with that €40 price tag? I know some will gladly pay out and that's cool but it just doesn't seem right. I suppose the cost of getting the game out there after how many years now since production started? Pretty sure it was some time during last gen. We've had AAA games not take as long.
