Sources: The PS4 Originally Included The Eye, Cost $500

Heading into E3, most people believed the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One would emerge with the same price. But Sony gained a big edge by announcing a starting price point that was $100 cheaper than the new Xbox. That was huge.

However, that may have been a last-second plan to give the PS4 an advantage. According to what multiple sources have told IGN, Sony originally intended to include the PlayStation Eye peripheral and charge $500.

This is essentially what Microsoft did, as the Xbox One comes packaged with the motion-sensing technology, Kinect. But Sony removed the Eye and as such, managed to bring the retail cost of the PS4 down to a much more attractive $399. You can purchase the Eye separately for $60 (if you don't already have one), and that would still be cheaper than the introductory cost of the Xbox One. If this information is accurate, it's one of the best moves Sony has ever made, wouldn't you say?

We still need a launch date for the PS4, though. Recent rumors have put it anywhere between the end of November and December 13.

I believe Sony officially refers to it now as PlayStation Camera.

Also Ben, there is no "i" in "moves" (third paragraph, last line) ;-).

It was the PS4 Eye about a month ago (despite having 2 cameras), dunno if that's changed.

I have a feeling that this decision was taken that day after Microsoft announced its price. I was one of the few that was shocked because I really did think that they were going to include it.

I think Men in Black is also one of the best "movies" Sony has ever made :p jk

I'm really glad the eye is not included, so everyone can choose for themselves, if they want/need it or not and it also means it's not required.

Yes that was a very good move because I don't want a stupid camera, and I don't want to buy a stupid camera, I want a gaming system, one that is cost-effective. Would I pay $500 for a setup just to put $60-$100 worth of what I bought in a drawer I will never open again? No I would not.

I'm happy with this decision. I'd rather have the choice (I'm never getting one) than pay an inflated price of $100 and never use it.

Xbots are trolling all over the place at IGN over this news. it seems as though the flood gates are open because of the Kinect 2.0 (best thing since sliced bread is what i gathered) and the high price point is somehow being justified even though they vilified people who bought the ps3 seven years ago. funny lot they are.

I thought it was interesting how they featured the PS Eye and it's features, and it's connection to the DS4 at the original PS Meeting in Feb, only to then not say anything about it at E3 and sell the console without the PS Eye, making those cool features redundant.

Actually, couldn't they still offer us a choice by offering a basic PS4 at $399, or a bundled PS4 with PS Eye with either an extra controller or game for $500? It's not like the PS4 requires the Playstation Camera to function...

I actually heard $450 w/ the camera, not $500. Definitely a good idea not to include something many people don't care for, let alone REQUIRE it (see Kinect 2), though!

Nobody was crying out for the camera, so removing it isn't a big deal at all. I'll take a console that's $100 cheaper without the accessory. The only thing that I can't believe it that they removed it that day; companies of Sony's size, don't just change course on a dime.

If you don't already have one? Will the PS3 eye work with the PS4?

I'm glad they removed it. Not only because it gives you a choice of whether you want one or not. It makes it quite clear that it's not required to operate the system.

bad decision.
now there going to have to work really hard and put out some amazing software to convince people to dive into it!
another thing M$ had a small advantage with MP games adding kinect support, good luck convincing them to bring that to ps4 when the kinect is in every xbox and the eye is not in every ps4.
they should of kept it and dropped the price by 50 bucks!
that way its still cheaper, but that would also eliminate so much pressure and stress on teams working with the device.

gotta love how $ony charge 100 bucks for a device which is only 60 though.
dunno how you can justify upping the price of the system by 100 bucks because your adding in the camera, a device which retails for 60 not 100!
oh well, thats $ony for you!
same $ony whos only charging 50 dollars less than the xbox one here, even though its 100 less than everyone else.
what, you have to pay a higher import tax than M$ does do you?
exactly why ive always hated $ony, treat the US like gods and treat everyone else like the gum under their shoe!

I think that was a given. Sony, to my thinking, has played it cool and slow, watching MS's moves and counter where unpopular. I am sure they also considered gamers feedback. They really do not lose because they have given the gamer the choice. So they give you the essentials... the console and controller. They leave it up to you to add on what peripherals you want.

My understanding with MS is that they want you in a sort of forceful way to use the Kinect for everything. I have never been a fan of voice control, etc. To me... its just adding more noise in my gameplay. Unless they have added an extra feature where when you swear.... a character in the game responds to it... like "I hear ya!". Cool as that might be its still just more noise. I have enough time dealing with hands free callers on the street talking as the walk along like they are a demented person who needs help. TEchnology can be fun and annoying.

If MS decided the same thing we'd probably have a Xbox One for $350

Who would have one then because if your talking about the PS3's Eye (camera) it won't work in the PS4,from what the official PS magazine is saying on there website, because the PS4's camera goes into the PS4's dedicated connector (AUX connector.

They are also saying the launch PS4 will have a 500GB hard drive, which can be upgraded to a bigger one,i'm guessing it will need one after time goes on a little just like my PS3 did. :-)
