Sources: The PS4 Originally Included The Eye, Cost $500
Heading into E3, most people believed the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One would emerge with the same price. But Sony gained a big edge by announcing a starting price point that was $100 cheaper than the new Xbox. That was huge.
However, that may have been a last-second plan to give the PS4 an advantage. According to what multiple sources have told IGN, Sony originally intended to include the PlayStation Eye peripheral and charge $500.
This is essentially what Microsoft did, as the Xbox One comes packaged with the motion-sensing technology, Kinect. But Sony removed the Eye and as such, managed to bring the retail cost of the PS4 down to a much more attractive $399. You can purchase the Eye separately for $60 (if you don't already have one), and that would still be cheaper than the introductory cost of the Xbox One. If this information is accurate, it's one of the best moves Sony has ever made, wouldn't you say?
We still need a launch date for the PS4, though. Recent rumors have put it anywhere between the end of November and December 13.
