What Is The Average Age Of Those Who Will Actually Like FFXV?

As I've been unable to determine Square Enix's plans for this franchise for the past decade (do they even know the intended demographic?), I've got to ask this, and it's a really interesting question.

One might assume that, at first glance, the average age of someone who will end up loving the upcoming Final Fantasy XV is significantly older than for most other games. After all, this legendary series is a quarter-century old.

Of course, Square Enix has done a bang-up job alienating millions of fans during the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, as clearly evidenced by the sharp decline in sales. With FFXIII selling over 5.3 million and Lightning Returns barely moving barely 1 million, that can only be described as a catastrophic drop. Then, it takes them over a decade to create Final Fantasy Versus XIII (which is now FFXV), and they're only predicting modest sales in Japan. I mean, come on...a measly million?

But aside from the precipitous fall in sales, I'm wondering who the audience is for this game. If a lot of the older fans have disappeared because FFXV simply doesn't look or play anything like an RPG, then you're actually left with the younger audience. Square Enix has said time and time again that they want to target younger individuals with this series, which is of course why it appears to be action first and RPG second. So, is it male teens? And of these male teens, one would have to assume they're all relatively new to the franchise, right? They didn't want to play previous entries but now, with the added flash and ceaseless action, they might be intrigued by FFXV.

And, if Square Enix succeeds, isn't this a victory for them? It's what they've wanted all along, right? You can't have an aging audience because after all, the older gamers don't have as much time to play and perhaps not as much motivation or interest, either. It almost feels like Buick overhauling their stuffy old person image and putting 20-somethings in their commercials. I don't like comparing old FFs to Buicks but you get the idea.

So, predictions on the average age of FFXV fans? I'm going with about 22.

I'm sure I'll enjoy it myself and I am in my mid 30's.

Looking forward to it. At the very least, give it a fair chance.

I'm less concerned about the age and more about what sort of person is specifically looking for such a bizarre creation. I can't think of anyone who would tell SE to make this game over something... else.

I would never tell any developer what to make, because I am not the one making it. If I was a developer, no way I'd want to develop what people want. They make games they want to make, whether you like it or not is irrelevant.

Growing up with FF since the SNES days, I can safely say, I AM SO EXCITED FOR XV!! WOOOO!

I hope that bothers you people that are so against this heh =P

Yea me too. I've accepted that the final fantasy of old is gone. Which is fine. I don't have time to mess around with turn based RPGs anymore I remember spending ours grinding dungeons or battling Ruby and Emerald weapon. Can do that anymore.

From the demo, I'm not sure what people were expecting. The game is as it has looked since the beginning. More action RPG rather than traditional. It's not like square promised us something them changed it. Seems some people who were originally optimistic have suddenly changed their tune to a more negative one based on, well I don't know.

It's not an RPG. It's action.

This isn't a difficult concept to grasp. It's not the mechanic that they changed that people have issue with, it's that THEY CHANGED THE ENTIRE DAMN GENRE.

anyone thats young and hasnt had a real FF experience (as in you started early and know the series) may not be interested in the game due to possibly being intimidated by seeing the # XV. they might think oh crap theres 15 of these games? do i have to play the other 14 to understand this?

i dunno im just thinking out loud.

so maybe mid-late 20s?

It will probably fit those (mostly!) who never played classic FF. I'm mid 30's and I'm not interested. Stealth, slasher, FPP minigun shooting? What's next - car/spaceship simulator included? They are going for the all-in one package. There's a saying - it's better to specialize in one thing and be best at it, then to be average in everything.

Huge fan of FFVll, FF1-FFVl, and FFXll. If I had the chance I'd play 6,8, and 9. Also huge fan of Dragon Quest Vlll, Lunar. I'd play more rpg turn based if I was older in the 90s and could buy my own games. Yes, it's possible someone like me is out there. Ever since kingdom hearts, I wondered what it would be like for final fantasy to be real time, so FFXV is like a dream game for curiosity sake. I want to see how much is possible they can push sprites into a real time event and cutscenes we can play rather than watch.

Everything I see in XV is final fantasy. I know gameplay is an absolutely huge factor and many would say this game should be titled something else. Well, with moogles, chocobos, magic, summoning, exploring, quests, airships, cid, crystals, and familiar monsters I personal think it would be silly to call it something else. The argument that they're simply trying to use the FF title to get sales and attention? Weak. They've incorporated many FF elements for them to just slap the FF title for sales.

I'm turning 26 this year btw. 22 may not be far fetched, but it wouldn't necessarily mean it's because they've lost the majority of old final fantasy fans. Average age for gaming in general wouldn't be mid 30s I'd assume which I believe is the age group if they were teens in the 90s.

FF9 is my favourite entry in the series, and it is turn based with 4 characters in your party instead of the usual 3. I recommend you play it if you liked those games you listed. Dragon Quest 8 is probably my favourite turn based RPG ever.

FF8 is my least favourite on the PS1 but it is still a solid playing game, minus the exploits you can use to cheese the game. I mostly didn't like the characters, specifically Squall...man him and lightning should go sit in a room and be moody and "cool" together.

I'm around your age as well and I think this game looks awesome and indeed looks like a Final Fantasy. I'm glad you realize Final Fantasy is more than just a combat system. I think people forget that FF13 was still "turn based" but lacked all the other things that FF was known for and it is regarded by most as the weakest entry in the series, not including sequels and spin offs.

Keep buying these travesty of games with the Final fantasy title and we will never get back to what the series is about, RPG, it is you idiots that is killing this franchise by buying this crap.

In fairness fewer and fewer people are buying the crap. I'm not decided on this thing, it may be an okay game, but given where they are taking the franchise I wouldn't be surprised if this only got the same sales as "Lightning Returns" (before she drops out the bottom of the porn circuit).

I own FFVII & FF Tactics on the PS1,
X, X2, XI & XII on the PS2,
And XIII on the PS3.

And being the 2nd oldest commenter here at 63, I can honestly say that I've never been able to get into this franchise(and it's not from lack of trying, as I take all of those titles out periodically & see if my tastes have changed for the better over the years. But still to no avail).

This isn't just you (99% of sites do this), but I find it funny when you say older gamers don't have as much time to play. I'm 59 & retired. I have all the time in the world to game. It's better than being a kid - no one tells me when/what I can play.

I've watched the new FFXV gameplay trailer & am still unsure about the game. Watching it & playing it yourself can be very different things. The hope I cling to is that X was my least favorite in the main series (I never played X-2 & also skipped the online only ones). I found it so awful that I skipped XII when it was released. A few years later I happened upon XII in a really good deal. It's now my favorite in the entire series!

Will lightning strike twice? (Yes, pun intended!) I don't know, but it keeps hope alive!!

Well, when I say "older" gamers, I'm not referring to the retired group. No offense but I doubt there are many retirees playing lots of video games in their downtime, though that's sure to change over the years.

Late twenties and there's no chance I would pay real money for "this" thing, not even with monopoly money. The only game I want from them at the moment is XII.

Still looking forward to it. Still enjoy the older games, my favourites are VIII, IX, X and XII. Thought the ideas for XIII were good, but the execution really let it down. Hopefully this will be more of a return to form. Just want a good FF game with a great story and engaging characters

@Jawknee Yes, I wonder that as well. None of my friends game, but most come to me for buying advice for their kids. Unbelievable how many I've had to tell that certain series (i.e. Grand Theft Auto) isn't for their 10 year old!
