Square Enix Launches Final Fantasy IX on Android

Whoa, another great news for RPG fans!

Square Enix just recently released Final Fantasy IX or FFIX on Android. FFIX is the first Playstation-Era Final Fantasy to hit Android.

FFIX is now available on the Play Store for $17.  For those that have played the original but may not still own it, this is a small price to pay for a bit of nostalgia. Of course, this is a hard pill to swallow if you own a PS Vita and can obtain a digital copy of the game at a much lower cost.

FFIX was the last entry in the main series that was released on the original Playstation.  The story follows Zidane, a scoundrel type whose theater troupe-slash-gang of thieves kidnaps the local princess, much to her surprise and delight. Eventually the winding story gets caught in the middle of a fantasy war. You could see the trailer below.  The Android port appears to preserve the original gameplay, but adds some "game boosters" to allow players to progress through the enormous story more quickly. There's also an auto-save feature, and some of the pre-rendered video and character models have been redone to take advantage of high-resolution screens.

Having the game available on an Android smartphone is arguably the most portable way to play it, thus increasing its appeal for the fans.  But I think I prefer more to replay the game on my PS Vita than on an Android phone.  How about you?

I have both the original and the digital version. Definitely will continue playing it on my Vita. It's one of the first Final Fantasy games that I played all the way through. Good game indeed.

Who cares, FFIX is better than both.

Better than both? Speak for yourself.

FF8>FF9>FF7

No matter which one is "better", FFVII is the most important.

You are certainly right. It's most important because it made me appreciate the other Final Fantasies more. I had to drag myself to play FF7 ugh.

And because it's more important to video game culture and history. FFVIII and FFIX had little to no impact on the industry beyond being recognized for their own merrit, despite being technologically more advanced.

FFVII changed everything. It's current cult following is proof of that, as are its sales. Both FFVIII and FFIX saw diminished sales from their predecessors.

Great game at the right time in video game history - that is all.

If FF8 and FF9 released before FF7 with the same graphics as FF7 it would have been the same sales and cult scenario (which I truly care nothing for).

Not to mention FF7 only has about 2 million more copies sold than FF8 - No big deal.

I've discussed this about a million times with other FF7 fans. We can go all day.

And if Uncharted 2 came out at the same time as FFVII, it also would have had the same cult following. So what? FFVIII and FFIX wasn't possible in 1996-1997. They needed to build off something.

And you can be wrong all day. ;)

I'm content with where the discussion has gone. All you've done is affirm the arguments I've said and then just decided you don't care about the facts.

I'm cool with that. You're allowed to like whichever one you like best. It's just ridiculous to think FFVII didn't do something amazing for the time.

FF9 is my favourite Final Fantasy period. Loved the world, loved the characters, loved the story and the music was some of the best.

IX was the king of mini-games in Final Fantasy. I remember being so blown away by the little things, like foggy breath in winter landscapes, too.

yeah, I was challenged in searching all the chocographs in the game. I never tried the card game though, because it doesn't interests me.
