Can DLC Keep You Playing The Same Game For A Year?

Aside from all the debate and controversy surrounding downloadable content, Season Passes, microtransactions and the like, we all know the basic purpose, right?

It's supposed to keep us playing. As in, well beyond the time we actually saw the end credits.

Obviously, it's working, because people are shelling out for DLC all year long for franchises like Call of Duty. And we're starting to see more and more DLC and Season Passes that run for a long time; a year is starting to become the norm, actually. What I'm wondering is how many gamers really take advantage of all the extra content, and continually play that title for at least a year. Have you found yourself doing this, even when you thought you wouldn't?

My other question is this: How big of a gap can there be between each add-on before you start to lose interest? I'm guessing developers and publishers want to hit that sweet spot, right around the time a player starts to tire of the experience but before he or she has put the game away for good. Is this about three months? My only experience with this is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has a Season Pass with two big expansions; Hearts of Stone released last October and Blood and Wine will be out this year (hopefully soon).

Now, the first expansion released about five months after the game, which I thought was just about right considering the sheer size of that particular adventure. But I have to admit, as we're now four months removed from Hearts of Stone, I may have some difficulty going back to The Witcher 3 when Blood and Wine comes out. Remember, I dearly love that game but at some point, you feel as if you've moved on, you know?

Thoughts?

For me, a perfect example is BF4. I bought and played several other games and this one is still fun for me and i keep coming back.

I'm totally with you on BF4.
I just wish EA would release all the DLC maps for free for regular folk now. It's been long enough. As someone who purchased all the DLC, I don't mind if they get it free now.
At least then, those maps will have more players on them.

It depends on the game. If I really enjoyed a certain game, I try to play their dlc's if there's any. The only games that I remember that I've played with their dlc are The Last of Us, Arkham Knight, and the Assassins Creed games.

Only if it's single player like Fallout.

Otherwise it's just more stuff for a game about gaining more stuff. That's what online MP is.

DLC must do two things right: size for price and timing.

If the timing is off I lose interest or have moved on from the game. If the content for price is not cohesive I usually don't feel happy with my purchase.

Getting DLC mostly depends on how big my gaming backlog is.

With a log like Witcher 3, MGSV, Fallout 4, Xenosaga X, and Bayonetta 2 I just don't have room for DLC. Most games anymore are so big as it is I just don't want them bigger. Give me less content and more polish. Gaming is getting too big for me. Too big of a time commitment. That is to try and play through every hot and appealing game.

Then there's SFV next week too. I always make time for my fighters though, DLC included. It's because it's multiplayer at that point.

dlc is great if justified. for example, pay $70 for full game and future dlc. now taking advantage of consumers and monetizing it is a different story.

For certain games that I lke - yes. Offline of course, as I don't do online. The example would be Batman AK additional story missions.

I used to be like you, where I hated online MP play.
Now... I *only* go back to Destiny for online MP events like Iron Banner. =)

Well, I played Destiny for almost 2 years, so...

Before that, I played Battlefield 3&4 for 2 years.

I'm still playing bloodboorne. So yeah. I do wish mgs v would have come out with a story and content expansion (I don't care about the online expansion). I'm glad fallout is getting a series of expansions, but I'll just wait for all of them to come out before I bother with them. Most expansions are crap though

DriveClub DLC has kept me playing well over a year. Most fun I have had in a racer in a long time. Motorcycle addition blew me away - never saw it coming.

Well, I'm not usually one for DLC, but no matter how late after it comes out, I will occasionally buy some DLC's if I've become especially well-rooted into the main game, ME3, infamous, etc, for example.

Also,.....if I see some "old" DLC on sale for a game I liked, such as one 3 DLC's I just got in the last PSN sale for "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
(& happily doing my part to help Rhode Island recoup some of their many millions of $$$ losses back after bankrolling this game, ya know).

Dlc done right then yes, diablo 3 has done it, still playing since 2013, even more addicted to that game than ever before with the recent dlc and patches.

Rumour is that another big piece of Dlc is heading our way before D4..
