Ubisoft On Cost Of Next-Gen Consoles: "The Price Is Right"

What do you think about the prices for the next-generation systems? Seem about right?

Ubisoft thinks they're great deals. The publisher's CEO, Yves Guillemot, told GamesIndustry Interational that both options are worthwhile, considering the impressive power behind the new machines:

"For the hardware they're putting on the market, the price is right. They are offering machines that will be exceptional, and for those prices, they're good deals."

Guillemot also praised Microsoft for going back on their used game and "24-hour check-in" policies. He said consumers didn't like that approach, so Microsoft listened and made the appropriate change. As for the prices, Sony's PlayStation 4 is set to debut at $400 while the Xbox One will launch with a $500 price tag. The latter console comes with Kinect, though, and both companies will be charging for online multiplayer this time around.

However, it is widely believed that the PS4 currently offers more for $400. Let's also not forget the several developers who have come forward and said Sony's console is as much as 50% more powerful than the Xbox One...

Sounds like a very generic way to say we're not picking sides and don't want to offend Microsoft. Even though the value of the PS4 in terms of hardware features has the XB One beat.

$500 is too much. MS needs to pull the Kinect to stay competitive. I think they'll eventually do it in order to compete on price. I say this because if Sony commands a major lead for the 1st year, maybe less, MS will be put in a position to adjust price. MS could decrease the baseline XboxOne cost by a lot if they took that glorified motion camera out. Sooner or later MS will realize that the Kinect's features serve the dashboard interface moreso than the gamer. The gamer is more profitable to them in this early stage of the next-gen.

But you can't remove the camera. It's integral to the machine functioning. It's similar to saying you could just rip out the cell processor in the PS3 to get the cost down. It simply won't work.

It's not quite like that. maybe they'll have enough foresight to know, that is to have a plan B, to have their core games function with only a controller if needed while preparing for launch.

I agree with Norrin on this one. Microsoft has integrated the Kinect right into the OS of the system. Sony integrated the Eye in, but they can remove it. There's SOO much on the Xbone that requires the Kinect. No Kinect=Xbrick on this one.

the camera is ultimately a peripheral to the core processing of the system, despite what MS may have you believe. There's nothing about it's functioning that couldn't be removed via software altercations. To say to remove a processor or something is to change the very underpinning of a console. A stupid camera isn't nearly the same thing.

also, this is MS. The same company that just recalled their own DRM and XBoxOne connectivity policies nearly over night. Their leadership and words weigh very little. Honestly, I'd be absolutely NOT surprised at this point if they changed their mind (I'm sure they're still getting hate mail as we speak from fans) and yank the Kinect from the box and offer up a core system for $350. I wouldn't be surprised one bit. We're still about 5 months out and I'm sure they're still eyeing the polls.

ironic they say you can totally turn kinect completely off so it wont respond to anything, yet you still have to have it connected.
whats the point of requiring something to be plugged in, but let people deactivate it so its not functioning?
M$ wont take it out of the box simply because of the problem of software support, you take it out your relying on people to buy it separately and no one will until respective and multiple titles release.
and no one is going to spend 30+ mill on games for devices which have not been adopted.

@Norrin Radd I think MS was also saying that 24-hour internet check-ins couldn't be removed from the Xbox One either, that it was integral to the function of the console.

Well in my opinion, the price is right for the Xbox One as well, it comes with Kinect after all.
But yea, it's not like everyone really wanted it in the first place........

Let's be honest here, taking into account how they've reacted throughout this generation I think if the tables were turned and PS4 was $500 and Xbox 180 was $400 they would say PS4 is too much.

If the XBone is a "good" deal, what does that make the $100 cheaper PS4?

There are still people in this world that think because a product is more expensive automatically makes it better. That is not always true.

ps4 is the one thats overpriced, especially considering it does not come with the camera!
only $ony can take a 100 dollar cheaper system, bring it here and suddenly its now only 50 dollars cheaper.
truly does everything, including credit card fraud, mishandling and dangerous storage of personal and financial information, faulty OS updates resulting in multiple mass bricks, and best of all ripping certain regions through the a$$!

biggest problem next gen systems will face though is what is next gen?
what makes these devices worth buying?
1 there are VERY few games exclusive to next gen taking full advantage of them, and most which are next gen exclusive are exclusives which are few and far between.
how many launch day exclusives do the 2 systems have?
from memory its KZSF, drive club, knack, forza 5, dead rising 3, ryse, quantum break and that crappy kinect sports game.
wow, is that really what your expecting to drive the sales of $550+ consoles?

2 the very few games truly next gen, what is next gen?
pertier fireballs?
wow, thats totally worth spending 550+ bucks!
im still yet to see anything that makes me sit back and say wow, this is what weve been waiting 7+ years for!
its funny the best most exciting games are actually cross generation games.
so again i ask, what is next gen?
whats going to stand out to people and make them say yes i NEED to drop the 550+ bucks?
plus 120 for each game, plus much more for accessories......
