Fallout 4 Digital Version Actually Outsells Physical Version

Welcome to the new world.

There's no doubt that Fallout 4 is a fantastic game and a very big seller, but did you know the digital version outsold the physical one?

Director Todd Howard confirmed as much to Game Informer:

"One of the things that is amazing: Fallout 4 sold more day one digitally than at retail. That's a big change."

Howard didn't share any exact numbers but we do know the publisher shipped 12 million copies to retailers for launch day alone, and this resulted "in excess of $750 million" in revenue. Bethesda claimed Fallout 4 was generating "record sales" in terms of both physical and digital numbers. But while digital sales continue to rise, I'm not sure I would've predicted that this game would've done better on the digital side. Would you?

Ah yes, such is the way of the world now. Recently, Bethesda revealed their ambitious DLC plans for the game in question.

I think most games are trending that direction. It's no surprise to me. What does surprise me though is the massive number of physical copies shipped. It just proves that the market still demands physical copies wether it's because of download speeds, limited isp's, or preference. The physical realm is healthy.

I have trended towards digital only.

That's kind of what I meant by preference. I wouldn't leave you guys out. I know at one point I had over 70 PS3 games that I was super proud of.

This is referring to day one sales, not overall. Its no suprise the digital version sold better on the first day of sales. People had been waiting over 7yrs to play the sequel to one of gamings greatest. People wanted to play Fallout 4 asap, this is the quickest way and the sheer amount of hype was incredibly high.
The title of this article is misleading. Plus the thoughts of how "this is the world today" is completely innaccuate to say as this only means day one sales. Personally, however I don't care how big the game is or how much I love it, I will never get digital. I always get physical.

Day one sales for games like amount to a significant percentage of overall sales. Also, Fallout started as a PC franchise and still has plenty of fans on that platform, all of whom buy digital.

Complaining about the semantics when the trend seems obvious is kind of silly.

Not surprising. I almost got a different game the other day online just cuz it was easier. Gotta remember though, aside from having your physical copy, that physical disc copies to the hard drive much faster than the download happens if you need to delete the game for space then want to come back to it.

I'm happy with my physical Fallout cuz of the giant ass map and extras. Too bad they only made like 3 pip boy editions for PS4.

of course they continue to rise(the sales)Fallout 4 on disc was a crippled release and because people are sick off that nowadays game studios don't take the time to polish the games for some unjustified reason, people think that when buy digitally they don't have to stuck with a game that you can't update\fix(and they are correct)because it's on disc and you know that you always have it crippled with bugs and errors and you realize that because the moment you insert the disc in the blu ray slot you will still have to download all the freaking patches that should be on disc at first which they aren't because the game's NOT freaking polished and they could have make a report like this:
we'll delay the game so to can deliver you a triple A experience that you won't have to worry and feel bad that you might took a wrong choice purchasing it in physical form because from now on you'll have the game disc again crippled of bugs and you'll have to get the updates to be able to play it normally instead of you to be able to can play it from day 1 and be happy about it!
i love the this game very much i hate that the studio even though had from june the time to polish it they didn't i just hope after all the season pass content is released beth to release a games of the year version all content included with an 100% polished bugs fixed game

This is the trend that eventually will be a usual thing. All my games are digital from the point I bought PS4. I have no desire to stare at the boxes on my shelf or show off to my friends.

Day one sales?
It is a surprise but when you think about it, maybe most Fallout fans can't make it to the store for whatever reasons so they just buy it digitally.
Just maybe though.

Historically it should have been physical pre-orders, many of which are now shipped to arrive on day 1.

Fallout 4 has become one of my favorite games of all time. It is everything in a video game I want and I can see myself playing it for several more months.

I read the interview and what has me excited is "survival mode". I will most likely create a new character for this game mode.

Bring on the DLC and mods!

Survival Mode is CRAP don't get your hopes up Obsidian handled it a million times better than Bethesda with New Vegas. In Survival mode on Fallout 4 all that happens is enemies do max damage and stuff heals laughably slow, think a stimpack takes like three freaking minutes or something to fully run its course?

So in a game where stealth is not always an option and enemies can take out 80+% of your health with a simple love tap, it's just not fun.

Everything else though yeah Fallout 4 is amazing.

I am not surprised as I am probably 99% digital on my PS4. I went digital during the PS3 gen as well. I love building my library and never being able to trade something in on a weak moment. It's been great to see an advertisement for an older game and think I can go play that right now, which I often do. The convenience is just worth it. Plus, I like giving my money to Sony instead of Game Stop or the equivalent. I must say that Amazon's 20% off program is amazing. I wish they allowed you to get digital codes.

Actually Amazon does offer digital preorder for quite a number of games now. They just stick the PSN/XBL code in your "games and software library" under your account when the game launches.
Also the seeing as the whole point is the 20% off, it does apply to digital preorders.

This is the thing I hate most about gaming tech now-a-days, which is all fine & good, but please, please, allow us as individuals, the "right to choose" whether we want all of our games as digital and/or physical.

As a gaming collector, I like seeing thousands of my games, all up on their shelves sitting "pretty", and not as some faceless fuggly ole thumb-drives that doesn't even show what games are even on them.

But with that said, I do buy a few occasional digital's but only if & when I don't think that that those few games will ever wind up being released on disc.

Lol I can never go digital living in Maine a lot of areas you can't even get above 15Mbps, hell way out in the boonies some places can't even get over 3Mbps, and the areas where you can get 50-100Mbps, don't think any provider offers over 100Mbps for residential, you are looking at around $100 a month JUST for internet then tack on like another $20-30 for phone and another $60+ if you want TV.

So yeah FUCK that, why can't Google lay some Fiber down here? =(
