Will Multiplayer Interest You More In The Upcoming Generation?

It can be argued that many of the best games made today don't rely upon multiplayer.

Many, like Dishonored, Heavy Rain, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite, don't even have a multiplayer component, while others (the Uncharted and Assassin's Creed games, for instance) aren't considered great for their multiplayer.

And yet, multiplayer has become a gigantic part of this industry. Many are sold on the idea of playing with others; there's a reason the biggest name in gaming today is a franchise that relies almost exclusively on the lure of multiplayer. But even if you're not into Call of Duty, do you see yourself becoming increasingly more active in multiplayer entertainment? When the next generation rolls around, will you be playing online more than ever before? Or will you stay locked in the past, like me, craving those single-player adventures from an escapist point of view? To me, this will also be a solo activity.

There's almost no doubt that multiplayer will only get bigger in the years to come. However, I love the fact that many anticipated new titles (such as Thief) won't have any multiplayer offering at all. I used to worry that the multiplayer explosion would gimp the campaigns in most games, but I haven't really seen that. Provided the single-player greatness continues, I'm good. What about you?

I see MP gimping just about every game they put it in except Sony exclusives. Not many games in a franchise were better after MP got shoved up its butt. I don't expect to be playing any more of it unless there is more stuff in the JRPG realm similar to WKC's online.

I wonder how FFXIV subscriptions will work on the PS4. I mean, will they waive the sub fee since people will be paying for plus to play online? I would give XIV a chance on PS4 if that were the case.

They must be planning to not use Plus for MMOs.

Publishers can keep shoving in multiplayer (competitive or co-op) and I'll keep ignoring it. I know that the industry is focused on the social aspect of gaming right now, but there are many of us who value solitary gaming and only occasionally dip our toes into the online pool.

I'm good with the solo experience. I don't mind some MP here and there, but I am more of a single-player kind of guy.

No. I am already less interested in MP games these days. Don't see that changing much in the future. I have been addicted to New Super Mario Bros. U and the DLC that was just released. I suspect the only MP I'll really dig into for the time being is The Last of Us for this gen and maybe Killzone on the PS4. My most anticipated games in the future are for the PS4 launch, inFamous Second Son, Zelda Wind Waker on the Wii U and Zelda A Link to Two Worlds on 3DS. So that right there says where I am at in regards to MP games these days.

my opinion of multi player will depend on how good dragons crown is. that will tell me what is out there for like minded gamers like myself. ie ppl who love 2D and fighters and retro style.

I have played 12 days in uncharted 2 multiplayer and loved every minute of it but as great as that multiplayer is nothing will compare to playing the Locomotion level for the first time.

I'm a single player gamer. I do however enjoy socializing in online games from time to time. Especially anything co-op. I even got my brother to buy Resident Evil 5 so we could play together. I wasn't planning on doing any multiplayer in the future but I have to say when I saw the shanghai trailer for battlefield 4 I decided I sure as hell was gonna get a group of friends together to make a dedicated squad to enjoy the hell out of that game.

I play games to be immersed in the story, not to play a handful of short scenarios over and over until my mind melts out through my eyes.

Sorry, I just am not a fan of MP unless it involves a friend in my living room and we're going head to head or playing co-op.

I don't really need multiplayer when the single player experience is so much better, like The Last of Us for example. I've just beaten its single player in Survivor difficulty because beating it once wasn't enough for me.

If u can find the right pardner, then certain co-op campaigns can be real fun online. The Uncharted 2 and 3 co-op missions were a real blast!

I think it will be about the same for me. My first love will always be SP games focused around a good story and universe, but I play search and destroy on CoD almost every night with my friends.
Not only is it a great way to chill and just chat with my friends who have moved out of state, but some of the most fun I've had this gen has been spent playing MP on a well oiled and organized team. If SP games ever start to feel gimped because of MP I will be pissed. But I agree that I haven't really noticed it too much this gen. I think there is still a wealth of great SP games to be found. If I had to choose I would pick a great SP experience in a second, but I believe there can be room for both as I feel they offer very different kinds of experiences and joy.

Nope, my favorite games have always been and always will be ones with strong single player campaigns. I really don't care about multiplayer, if it happens that some friends are online the same time I am then maybe we'll play a few rounds of Killzone or Resistance but I don't care about that aspect of a game near as much as I do the single player experience.

Yes and for one fundamental reason - Metal gear Online!

I have played many online game this gen, but none even come close to the diversity of what you can do on MGS4's MGO. being a 3rd person action game you could do more with the character you are controling like go up against a wall, dive forward ect. But what I love is all the other Metal Gear traits like using a box to ram into oppontents (Knocking them off a ledge for an instant kill!) Or another thing I would do is get a riot shield hide in an alley and not let anyone past (Much like the Gauntlet in the sports TV show the Gladiators). There was just endless possibilities and because the game was based of of Metal Gears stealth mechanics it was not just a frantic kill fest.

So now that we will be getting a new Metal Gear Online with The Phantom Pain, consider myself sold. MGS5 is enough to jusify a new console but with MGO too. I will be sorted for aslong as they keep the servers up.

in certain games i do look forward to multiplayer in fps games and action games yes not all games need multiplayer but then again its an option that we have some great and some not so great for me games like bf4 are a must its a an almost complete experence and fun to play with friends and strangers alike fighting games are always fun and sports also are fun , i guess it all depends on the game some need to have a co op option and co op is always fun for me , eg would like to play killzone co op rather than competitive online multiplayer most times and most games i rather play the story co op than the multiplayer competitive game at times

No, I still do not care for multiplayer. The only multiplayer I ever cared about was Killzone 3. But I only played a little. I would rather play single player.

I think multiplayer is really only for people who buy a few or less games a year, not like five or more like I do.

It all depends, but I think I will like it the same. If they innovate and add a lot of new refinements then I will probably like it more. BF4 looks like it is innovating with the FB3 engine. It's going to be fun to see what they come up with.

Multiplayer could be far more awesome if not required but an added bonus to the SP experience.

Remember how it was implemented in Journey?

Not a bit of interest. And I´ve said it a few times now, and I´ll say it again, I dislike very much that multiplayer elements degrade single player resources (time, game quality, exec. money, disc space, devs time/ideas, hard disc space, etc etc). Just give me pure single player fun and you´ll have my money.

Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur, and Dragon's Dogma are some of the best single player games around. Witcher too, actually.

But it is so fun to play multiplayer online rpgs.

Some people don't like multiplayer because they cant get along with people. Many of them come around, eventually, and understand it is ok to have friends and not live alone in your mommy's basement all the time. heh.

Funny, you're actually describing the stereotype of an MMO player.

Some of us have friends already, and just want to relax with a good game, without being hassled about "partying up," or who's "owning" who, or listening to crying babies over a headset that someone never turns off.

I look forward to see what new possibilities the next gen brings with it, and that includes within the multiplayer realm.

But no matter what new there will be, I just know that most of my online gaming will still be coop along with good buddies, PvM.

If I wasn't interested before (and I wasn't), why would I be now because it's a new gen?

If anything, I think at some point sooner or later this CoD multiplayer shooter fad is going to fade away.. you can only have so many almost-identical games that all look & play the same before people will get bored of them... It's happened before, it will happen again.
