Kojima: Power Difference Between PS4 And Xbox One "Small"

This comment from the Metal Gear Solid master should probably be taken with a grain of salt.

In a recent interview with 4Gamer where Kojima talked Playstation 4 the veteran developer went against the grain in his assessment (translated by Dualshockers) of the power difference between the upcoming Playstation 4 and Xbox One consoles.

“The difference is small, and I don’t really need to worry about it.”

This brief statement contradicts a report that Playstation 4 boasts 50% more raw power than its competitor and comes at a time when Playstation 4 lead architect Mark Cerny details exactly how Sony has built extra power into its console architecture.

As we know Kojima recently stumped for Microsoft at E3 and it's probably safe to say that he has enough invested in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain being a success on the Xbox One that any console favoritism at this point would be counterproductive on his part.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I honestly never cared for MGS much. Snake Eater was good, but I just couldn't get into 4. I guess that's one reason I didn't care when I found out V was going multi-platform. I do think his words are being taken a bit wrong though...
I think he's meaning that the difference in the way each console is set up is not much different this time and making the game work on both is not going to be troublesome. It doesn't sound like he's referring to graphics or anything...that said, I bet he'll make the PS4 version inferior just to keep it even with xbox.

Why does it seem that once a Sony exclusive developer goes multiplatform, they magically "forget" about how good a Sony console is?

Early on in this new console cycle, I really do believe that all third-party developers will only code to the lesser console. It'll again be up to first-party developers to really highlight the PS4's capabilities.

@Simcoe, I highly doubt that my friend. Sony worked along side Devs to figure out what would best make the PS4 a great console. We got what we got because of the Dev teams. So I think what we'll see is Devs designing for the PC at high capacity and then porting down the PS4 and XboxOne in that order. They are pretty much using stuff that you'd find in a decent PC these days.

Lots of pitchforks out today. Hideo Kojima probably cares less about which console is powerful and which has this or that. He is a game designer first. His game is coming to all platforms and I would bet that it'll show up on PC since the new consoles are very close in comparison. Anyone who is saying it's for the "check" or he's a "xbox" guy now needs to get their head examined. Unless someone here is actually on the dev team behind both consoles I doubt anyone would really know.

Big seriously? Why is it necessary to bring up MGS4 when we are clearly talking about XboxOne and PS4? Is there something I am missing from this article that hasn't been already stated? Let's all calm down and take a look at both console specs. There is hardly that much of a significant difference that he cannot make this game on multiple platforms. Let's not be fanboyish here guys. Let's try and be rational. XboxOne has Blu-ray now if I clearly recall correctly. The insides of the systems now rival that of current PC's. So what am I missing. This isn't 360 vs. PS3 debate anymore guys, this is XboxOne and PS4. Let's get updated.

Lastly, why does it really matter which one is better than the other? Wouldn't that only be made to soothe the fanboy rage? I mean I am totally getting a PS4 based on what exclusives I know Sony has. I've been with them since PS1. I am sure folks who play on Xbox and will probably continue to get an Xbox now that MS has let up on the restrictions will probably play this as well. Why not, it's being designed on both. Hell it's even coming to the 360. Somehow. FF15 and Kingdom Hearts 3 are on XboxOne as well. What does this all tell you? Yeah companies want to make money, they don't care about fanboyism, buy your console of choice and play games. What does his opinion (or well his fact since he develops on both) have to do with your personal purchase?

MGS4 is relevant to this discussion because we are exchanging goods for currency. This guy dissed the Xbox a while back. Who cares if Xbox one has a bluray drive now? Xbox one is the lesser of the two consoles by 50% less raw power. This guy showed MGS5 on the Xbox one E3 and it was the first game to showcase on the event. He was payed a hefty check. He's also being payed now to say this kind of stuff. Microsoft rolls like that. Heck, I'd say anything for a nice check in the mail.

Well you said "Hideo Kojima probably cares less about which console is powerful and which has this or that". So regardless what game it is, that proves he Cares about hardware. Personally I could care less what he says or which is more powerful, but you made the statement and I responded accordingly. So when his publisher has been wanting to get MGS on MS console for a while (probably because MS will pay for it) you know he wont talk negatively about it when his game is showing up on said console.

Guys, I've heard that check crap time and time again. Please where is the proof of this? I still say this sounds like extreme fanboyism. But you know I'll leave it at that. The folks here have become super narrow minded lately. I love this webpage for the news, but I think folks here only search via one website for their information and it clearly shows with the convo's lately. MGS4 has no relevance to this topic since Kojima isn't talking about it. The only ones are those that have Sony and the Playstation brand so far up their *you know whats* that they don't bother to do the research. I don't care what story MS or Sony spins those systems are pretty close to one another. My PC is still way more powerful than both combined. So which is powerful is moot in that regard, but whatever, I suppose the "war" will forever rage on and on and apparently console devs are taking sides all of a sudden because of one man's opinion. Thankfully the folks here are in the super minority of the gaming generation. Attitudes like this would make gaming unpleasant for anyone.

One should keep in mind that that is how MS operates in all their other business endeavors, spending money to tear down the competition versus building a good product.

Case in point: look at the "Don't get Scroogled" commercials and also notice how news stations that once used Google Earth have all been converted to Bing. That didn't happen because the service is better.

Its more along the lines that Kojima has said and done things that completely did a 180. Sound familiar? Konami is having serious money issues. If MS has some hefty check for them to make MGS an xbox icon then you bet they'll do it.

If Kojima is biting his tongue and forcing a smile for the sake of Konami, he still shouldn't alienate his fans. I may have only played MGS4 but everything i've read that he's said, but he shows up at the xbox reveal. MS's E3 and gives that hint that MGSV is xbox1 exclusive? People's problem is not brand loyalty. Its the fact the man they respected is becoming someone they can't respect. I buy Sonys and Nintendos consoles.

I'm sure several other readers on here own more than just a ps3. MGS4 was brought up because Kojima had said something around the lines of "I don't like MS or the xbox. My games won't be released on their console." And now this. So what can people take from this 180 from him? Should his fans praise him for being a liar? No their going to be disappointed. Im sure the people don't care about MGS5 going xbox 1 because who cares. More people get to enjoy it. Its the fact he's making it out to be as if MGSV is exclusive to the xbox 1.

He hasnt even mentioned the ps4 version, only by logo. Why? There was a rumor before E3 that MS was paying big $$$ to developers to not mention the ps4 version of games. And it's not just this site that has that information. The people who come here are pretty open minded about all things.

Claiming that people who love Kojima and MGS who feel a little betrayed by his attitude, need to get their head examined is why they got upset. Nothing wrong with having an opinion but insulting the people who come here isnt a way to get along. Bottom line is Kojima said something before and now he's doing the opposite of what he said. He's alienating his fans who are on the playstation, by pretending their version does not exist. When his games got famous on the PS.

If Kojima would start showing off the PS4 version of this game people would most likely feel better. I sure would.

Yup, over the years I've done almost as much gaming on Xbox as I have PlayStation. There's no brand loyalty from me, I'll admit I'm a 'fanboy' maybe of certain franchises but as far as pieces of plastic that play them and the companies that put them out? Not really, which ever one appeals to me more is the one I get first but I always get at least a second console at some point. My problem with Kojima is simply him acting like the PlayStation brand, the one with the fanbase that made his series popular, is basically taking shots at it now. It'd be like if Bungie were taking constant shots at MS. There's no reason to. Bottomline is, the guy is a hypocrite, for years he talked up Sony's consoles, now MS cuts his employers a check and all the sudden Sony is trash, PS fans don't exist and shouldn't be given any information on the version of MGS coming to their system of choice and MS and its fanbase are the greatest. He can shove it.

If I remember correctly his swapping disc dig was more of a throw back to the PS1 era than it was a dig at MS. That's how I read it anyway considering there really weren't a lot of games out at the time that required multiple discs on the Xbox.

In regards to his comment, perhaps the translation is wrong or the comments were taken out of context which seems to happen often with Japanese developers and English publications. Not to mention he really hasn't worked with either console to a great extent. MGS5 is his first game for either console.

I think you're right, Jawk. I also think that nobody really knows what the performance is going to be on these consoles... the developers have build kits, but how much do they reflect reality? There is some concern, for instance, about how much computing power is going to be chewed up by these 3 overlaying operating systems on the X1. I don't think the devs will really know how that works until they get the final product.

I guess really it doesnt matter, my only point with that was that if the difference isso small, are other reports lying? And Iif its nothing to worry about hardware wise, he certainly has a change of heart regarding hardware based on that comment.

@Comic Shaman,

If developers don't have the final kits by now, then there are some serious problems at Microsoft.

We are five months away from the Xbox and PS4's respective releases, and I don't see how they would have enough time to work with final dev kits if they were just now getting them.

If that were the case, then I would expect the launch of the Xbox to be pushed back around six months.

I think that the system specs for both systems are pretty well set in stone at this point, and bringing anything new to the table this late in the game would likely cause Microsoft more trouble than they can afford.

@Big, I don't think other reports are lying. I honestly don't believe this is really what Kojima meant. Far too often when English publications try and translate what Japanese game developers say, it's either wrong or taken out of context. Either out of incompetence or intentially for hits. Happens to Iwata from Nintendo all the time by the concern trolls. Given Sony's track record building long lasting, evolving hardware, well know soon enough if what DuelShockers says he said is in fact what Kojima meant.

@Shaman, indeed. Neither platform is out for a number of months and given all of the demos that MS showed at E3 were done on a PC rig, I wouldn't be surprised if Kojima is just looking at specs on a sheet of paper while building his game on a PC while waiting for the final dev kits to port.

Look at how quickly Capcom and SquareEnix went running to MS for a little cash. Japanese third parties are no better when it comes to this than North American or European developers. And I don't blame them, if I'm heading up a third party I'm putting my games on as many consoles as possible. I wouldn't be trying to alienate one group though like the idiots at Capcom, Square and now Konami have. The first two have already seen sales suffer a little bit for that, Konami may very well be next.

Another game gone to waste. The PS3 was so much better than the 360 but bribes were handed out and we hardly saw the difference outside Sony's exclusives. Now the same crap is coming to the next gen consoles. Maybe its for the better, i considered MGS 4 as the end.

MGSV better look and play the same on both consoles.
instead of getting the short end of the stick in this generation.

Actually, depending on your sources. Some developers and other people have found that MS's console memory does seem to be less optimized so games are lagging behind by more than 50%

All I can remember is those terrible loading screens after each act...

Certain moments of MGS4 were amazing and some of the best I have ever had in gaming. But then there were moments like ACT 3...

sigh, again.
can we wait till we actually know what all the hardware in the system is, and actually have development tools stabilized for the systems?
comparing them now in such prototype stages is just stupid, its like playing a alpha and bitching about the unstable frame rate!
