Sony "Happy To Have The Conversation" About Cross-Platform Play

It was pretty big news: PSN and Xbox Live users playing together.

Of course, even though Microsoft extended the invitation, Sony needed to respond (and don't forget that developers will have to opt to back this new cross-platform feature).

Well, Sony has offered an encouraging albeit vague statement; as GameSpot reports, the company obviously isn't dismissing the idea out of hand but also isn't ready to make any commitments just yet. Sony also reminds us that PlayStation has offered cross-platform play with PC for years, dating all the way back to Final Fantasy XI on the PS2. The statement reads simple:

We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

If it ever happens, it means the deal would end over 10 years of complete separation between PlayStation and Xbox players, which would definitely change the face of the industry. The question is how often developers would take advantage of the option, and how difficult it might be to implement. Then there's the other question: Do PlayStation fans even want to play with Xboxers? ;)

When Xbox One is buried it's going to be strange to see that "Xbox" app tab on the PS4.

it's just playing with them online I don't mind this. It's not like you will be able to send them invites or add them to your friends list.

That will be a really, really huge deal once that happens via Rocket League.

Quite frankly I could care less about this. Why is it even appealing? Would I truly ever know I I was playing with an Xbox player? I never knew who was a PC player in A Realm Reborn. Just doesn't seem appealing.

My other concern is could this create further expenditures for consumers?

On Unreal III it had a symbol next to the chacters name that let you know. I always had a blast going up against PC players, especially the ones who liked claiming that keyboard/mouse was the only option for shooters. It was always fun listening to the reasons why i was on top and they rarely were.

As far as more cost that game had no extra cost attached to it. The only reason you would have paid more is if you wanted to create mods then you had to buy the PC version.

I could see the fun in playing against a mouse and keyboard but I'm not sure that makes it worthwhile. I don't remember that symbol though. Maybe I didn't play long enough, I don't know.

I know Unreal 3 didn't have a cost increase. But I actually am not sure there wouldnt be an added price for consumers. Especially allowing another group of consumers in. Obviously developers now days talk a lot about how much it costs to maintain servers. Think about it, they'd essentially be allowing two other groups of consumers in. That instantly creates more maintenance costs.

I'm just being hypothetical of course.

It was Xbox who originally decided against it in the first place. FFXI was the exception as it started well before Xbox was a major player.

MS trying anything just to even out the race? whether if its real or if it happens it doesnt phase me. as someone mentioned we wouldnt even know if theyre on other platforms unless they intentionally let you know hey this person is an xb user. its fine with me if all were doing is matchmaking.

Smells of desperation...
No way they would even consider it if they were on Sony's position right now.
MS is afraid people will decide for the PS4 more and more, since it dominates and people want to play with their friends on PS4.
If I were Sony I would say no thanks!

I don't think it matters if they say yes or no. Since ps4 is in more people's houses now, it will be note like "I can play with Xbox one owners now? Might as well get a ps4 then, it's more popular". Sure live has the better network as of now, ignoring that it was down for a good amount of days recently, psn has been catching up. But the thing is, while pretty much everything is locked out of live, you can still use other apps that aren't gaming related without buying plus. It has more appeal as a media station, which is weird because they focused on gaming this time unlike Xbox.

Say what you will about how the they're handling their Xbox division but Phil Spencer has been the center piece of this turnaround. Making him the head of Xbox is the best thing they could have ever done. Next gen might be an interesting battle. Even though this is an interesting idea, cross platform play, I want to know how much did ps4 demolishing Xbox in sales has influenced this decision or how much did Phil push for this. I mean I still remember the time when 360 was on top and they refused to let pc and Xbox owners play together in ff11 so square didn't initially release the game on their system. I don't exactly remember the details but I believe it was 360 and ff11.

Next gen will be simple - Sony will do what neither MSFT or Sony did at launch and make their new console fully backwards compatible. Doing that coupled with the user base 2-3x as large will mean its an upgrade rather than a new gen so people will stick with what they have rather than ditching. Cant see cross play being a feature tbh.

The headaches that Sony and Microsoft would have to put up with are to me outweighed by the benefits to gamers and the life spans of the games.

Many games would have longer lives because of a much larger player base and their servers could potentially stay up longer because of that. And sure someone is going to throw out the argument that "that means it'll cost them more money", and yes it will but the longer a game lives also means more and more sales.

Cant see a single reason why Sony would need to do this. They are dominant, largest user base and able to get all the exclusives and independent titles they want though the twice as large user base.

How on earth will Sony benefit from having access to extra players on microsofts console? Yeah it may make people less likely to buy a xbox but the vast majority of gamers probably would have made up their minds already.
