Report: Sony Working On More Powerful "PS4.5" Console

You've probably heard the rumors about a more powerful version of the Xbox One.

Now, here's another supposedly substantiated rumor that talks about a more powerful PlayStation 4.

As reported by Kotaku, Sony is preparing a more capable version of their flagship games console: It will boast increased graphical capabilities, which means games could run in 4K resolution. It seems several developers told Kotaku about this improved system, though it isn't known if current owners will simply be able to upgrade their hardware or if Sony would produce an entirely new console. This "PS4.5" supposedly features an upgraded GPU that will also help to enhance games for PlayStation VR.

Though Kotaku couldn't name any of its sourcse, they claim they were able to confirm this news with "at least four separate sources." Maybe it makes sense: We've had TVs that can produce 4K for a while but no games can manage that, and no game systems, either. In order for current gaming hardware to catch up, perhaps this new, more powerful PS4 is a necessity...?

Question is, would you buy one if it came out? More importantly, would you feel obligated to buy one?

if the difference is just a 4k upgrade and games loading 1.2 seconds faster, then no, i refuse. and it still wont entice me into vr. ill try vr but i dont see myself dropping more $ anytime soon on peripherals

There's no question about it, the standard won't be 4K gaming on whatever this actually is. Sure, we may see a 4K signal output for games with some level of increased rendering resolution. Something Sony may shamefully try to pass off as "4K gaming" as they did with 1080p for PS3 last-gen. Where 1080p didn't actually become a gaming standard until 7 years later with PS4.

Anyhow, the scaleable architecture these platform providers settled on this gen does make rumors like these plausible. Though, I think a part of this has been stymied by the PSVR excitement. The inadequate GPU in the PS4 will eventually become a big deal in the coming years, especially when we see big budget AAA titles getting Oculus support PC-side, whether officially or through modders. So perhaps this is just PS wishful thinking. Where they don't get stuck playing scaled down VR versions of the hottest games.

Personally, I believe I don't want part of it. I don't want to be buying new consoles every 3-4 years for subtle boosts.

I just can't buy into the idea that AAA studios are going to spend a great deal of money on VR experiences. Will someone try to make an Assassin's Creed VR game? Yup, but I see something more like an original peripheral game would usually be rather than a virtual version of the original.

By the time anybody is willing and able to spend that kind of money to produce a game the tech will have to be cheaper meaning it will come as late as a PS5 generation anyway.

This will be an experimental generation for VR I believe.

I doubt many will make AAA VR exclusive games. But because VR is sorta like mapping your r-stick to head movement I expect several regular AAA games to get VR support PC-side. I say PC side because the dev will leave it up to you if you're willing to spend the cash to get their game running, as it is, at VR speeds. Its a power hungry luxury feature that core PC gamers are no stranger to. The PS4 and PSVR combo is stuck at a canned spec. Devs would have to specially dial a game back for PSVR. We're talking by a lot too. That could be a problem for standard AAA games.

Hey. I forgot all about how the PSVR does its own frame interpolation to get to the 120fps mark. Which basically means the games just have to render at 60fps.

That's much more realistic than getting games rendering at 120fps natively.
There's more hope for AAA game VR support than I thought, at least with those games that already have a 60fps target.

See I wonder how true that is. Can Bethesda just pop out a patch that puts me inside Fallout 4 by making my head the right stick? If they can then it could be game over right there at least for first person games. I imagine there's more to it than that though.

If Bethseda doesn't do it, modders surely will. It's simply mapping camera coordinates to another input system. Perhaps they'd have to fiddle with the FoV some as well. I suppose also the game would need to be configured with stereoscopic rendering output. But really there shouldn't be anything signifcantly standing in the way about making it compatible. It's not like new assets need to be made.

It's for this reason I have to lean towards the PC side of things when it comes to VR.

EDIT: but one thing is for sure, getting FO4 to push 120fps at really high VR res PC-side will cost a ton for a while yet in graphics card processing. So people will need to pay handsomely for it for some time to come.

I think it's ridiculous. This actually makes me so mad I have to laugh about it.

I suppose if the only difference would be games being able to run at 4k and th VR stuff, I'm okay with not purchasing one. However if my gaming experience is going to be significantly less on the PS4 I bought just a couple years ago, I'll probably buy in. However at this point that's not a certainty.

I just don't get this though.

Well it makes sense since VR is very demanding and 4K is starting to be cheap.

What I don't get is... Why you don't get? The way I see it... The PS4 games will keep looking the best they can on PS4. Having a stronger version only means that if you wish to have better graphics, you can! It's like, they are giving an extra option. You would spit on it because you don't like the idea of people playing the same game with better resolution? What about the PC crowd? They get all the best... Do you feel obligated to buy the latest GeForce GTX 980 ti? I sure don't lol

What would make me angry though is if they start releasing games only for the new PS4K thing. But since they have a PC-ish architecture now, I don't see that happening.

I'm shocked on this rumor. It's still too early for me to upgrade to a new console. Sony should just make a patch or something to ps4 to improve its capabilities instead of releasing a new upgraded PS4 hardware.

I'm not sure whether I understand your question regarding whether I'd feel "obligated" to buy one. When would anyone ever feel an obligation to buy any game console? Perhaps what you mean to ask is whether I would feel that it would be necessary to buy the latest hardware or else risk being left behind? In that case, I suppose it would depend on the games and whether I wanted to play particular games that required the new hardware.

If this news is true, prepare for another re-release of ps4 game like Bloodborne and Witcher 3 remastered with 60fps or another ultimate remastered for the last of us and gta v in 4k...

"4k @60fps" You do realize that the point of a remaster is to "enhance" the graphics of games, right? No matter how good a volume discount Sony might get, they'll never be able to come up with a machine at a good price point that could do such a thing. Just look up how much it takes to run GTA5 at 4k on a PC.

This is a standard questionnaire Sony sends out after several years of release for the next console. Based on the information it seems Sony is sticking with the x86 architecture which will likely offer true backwards compatibility. Makes sense with all the PS3 remakes on PS4. PS5 will be 4K ready with similar feature set of PS4 and VR support out if the box.

Games on the consoles having hard time to run at 1080p 60fps...how are they going to manage 4k gaming?

People keep talking about 4k as if it were an actual viable option. Even the most powerful pc hardware can hardly run a 4k game in mid-high to high settings in the high 40 low 60 FPS. Now imagine how it will run on a CONSOLE. Even if Sony was to actually make the effort to create a console that could run games at 4k devs would have to turn down the graphics to somewhere between PS1 and PS2 quality, and they'd still run at very crappy frame rates as we've seen this gen.

How about fixing the HDMI audio output bug? No center channel sound on 5.1/7.1...

I think it might be your...something. I've heard 5.1 surround sound through a 2 speaker set up on my receiver (because I didn't have the surround speakers hooked up yet) and it sounds so weird. No dialog whatsoever since it's what the center channel is for. So yeah check your settings connections and privileges while you're at it.

I would welcome this option, even though I just bought my PS4 only a few months ago. It's still just an option, and it would be a good way for people who either want to run games at higher resolution/fps or of course run games at better quality with the VR, which is probably not a small reason they're doing this (if they are)

this is a pointless console.. no one cares about 4k.. a lot of people don't even yet have HD tvs or Blue-ray.. no one, except millionaires, will be able to afford tvs capable of 4K right now, so this seems like a pointless waste of money on Sony's behalf

this for the 4K???
most people don't even have a Blu-ray player because they don't understand 1080p is better than 720p, so now the next gen of hi def products come when nearly noone will be interested.
And what about the 4K TV prices? Until 2020 or more the majority of people won't be able to afford it.

If they do make it, will they have to make two versions of the same PS4 game? Will there be any noticeable improvement if picture quality? Buying one will be fine if you have never owned a PS4 or actually have a 4K TV.
