What Is Your #1 Reason For Purchasing The PlayStation 4?

Making such a purchase decision isn't always easy. There are numerous factors that come into play, especially these days.

There are so many things to consider; there's price, power and potential, online factors, reliability, the controller, the games, and your personal experience and history with each console manufacturer. Everything gets tossed into the decision-making pot and gets mixed around, and the end result is - ideally - a decisive "Yea" or "Nay."

But if it was a "Yea," what was the #1 reason you opted to spend your hard-earned money on Sony's new machine? What about the PlayStation 4 most appeals to you? Is it simply that it's $100 cheaper than the direction competition ($399 as opposed to the Xbox One's $499 price tag)? Is it because you're convinced the selection of exclusive software will once again eclipse Microsoft's exclusives? Is it due to the backlash concerning that used game DRM and "24-hour check-in" mess? Sure, Microsoft rescinded those policies but in the eyes of many, the damage has already been done. M$ showed their hand.

So on your list of reasons that led you to the purchase decision, what sits at the top? The only one that actually concerns me is reliability; this new system with "off-the-shelf" computer parts and AMD architecture (basically what Xbox has been using) doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence...

software support. There's exclusive franchises I can count on the PS4 having. The Xbox One has it's own too, just not as many that I'm aware of.

Last gen it wasn't just Sony's published games but also all of the exclusive third party support. But that difference is far less divided now. Where franchises like Metal Gear, Tekken, and Final Fantasy were not expected to appear on consoles outside of a Playstation in any meaningful way.
This is no longer the case.

I'm still somewhat hoping MS pulls the Kinect and drops the XboxOne to $350. This would make the platform feel somewhat competitive to me.

As it stands right now I'm going to sit back and watch the early adopters pay too much and deal with faulty hardware woes while they remain anxious for the big hits that make their next-gen console really feel next-gen.

Software support _and_ the easy-to-code for design, and more open 'ethos' Sony have (always, relative to the console competition) had. War Thunder doesn't hurt either ;). Plus, at the end of the day, there are more games coming to PS4 that I'm keen to play :D.

First party exclusives, just as some xbox players will get it because of their first party exclusives. Not only will the PS4 have exclusives to my preference, but with the better hardware, they can perform better since they'll be optimized more than multi-platforms (or at least should).

I can't think of any other reason being number one. Price is a factor, but it's not a total deal breaker because you can always wait and such. They both play online, although the PS4 is a bit cheaper and imo, a better deal. The controller is something you should be able to get used to. As for reliability, and unless you're waiting for reports, you can't really use it to determine which console to buy since they both practically are built with the same architecture. You can maybe guess by the heat and power consumption they produce, but even that's a thin assumption.

So yes, it's the software support. The cheaper price, cheaper online play, more powerful hardware, and smaller design are definitely a plus factor for me though that makes the decision that much more easier and comforting.

If I had to nail it down it's the quality of exclusives and the knowledge that they will come.

People say "weeeellll Microsoft can always up their game, we could see them compete on that front better this generation." The fact is Sony has invested in a ridiculous number of in-house development studios and Microsoft really just has the same handful of studios.

A close second is the fact that Sony has proven that it actually cares about gamers. People say "They are in business to make money just like Microsoft," of course they are, but nobody from Nintendo to Sega to Atari ever muscled their way into the industry and won their place so despicably. Other companies, including Sony, see more than just dominance and dollar signs when making industry decisions. I respect that.

Do tell about the exclusives, I have yet to be convinced by one so far. All the titles I am interested in are multi-platform.

The main reason I will be getting a PS4 is for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I was content with it being a PS3 release, but now I know of a PS4 release I have to get it - I cannot have a compromised Metal Gear experience.

But regarding why I would get a PS4 over an Xbox Inconsistency? Well Other than Kinect... not much really, basically due to the fact that the PS4 has been proven to be more technically efficient like the PS3 was this gen. Years down the line it has proven to be more efficient than the 360 in many ways - take having the Blu-ray as an example games like L.A. Norie and Metal Gear HD Collection had multiple discs on the 360, not so on the PS3.

But in all honesty they really are minor reasons, there is not an exclusive I have seen which has really made me decide to go for one or the other... If anything it would be Xenoblade 2 for the Wii-U... bu the prospects for that console are not looking promising...

Ultima, what I mean to say is that the exclusives WILL come. I'm not stoked about the initial reveal much either except maybe Second Son, but you can be assured that with Sony's backing of studios the very best highest quality exclusive software will be there just like it was with PS3, whose exclusives eclipsed those of 360 without batting an eyelash.

Games and exclusives. Plus i'm a huge killzone fan and it's a playstation exclusive so Sony has me on that. I'm even getting a Vita for Mercenary.

This upcoming gen it seems really pointless to own both consoles. 99% of what's coming out is gonna be multiplat, and Playstation has more exclusives and alot of them range from really good to some of the best games i've ever played. I don't like how people are saying "real gamers get everything" and "if you don't get them all you're a fanboy and poor". That's just not true, there's not even enough time to play all the games that are gonna be on PS4. I think having one is enough.

sony is a good company yes but not infallible. their QC leaves something to be desired. that said i own a sony android pentaband phone and hope i never need it serviced. before i go off to bed, i must get off my chest that Ben is pushing the idea of buying the ps4 at launch a bit too hard. 400 bucks is not chump change, and killzone shadowfall looks like a ps3 game with better lighting. the only game that makes me think only on a ps4 is watch dogs. IMO we have the makings of ps3 all over again with resistance 1, ie last gen graphics and an overpriced system playing catchup to consumer expectations. i wish sony would have unveiled the price and launch date but held off until next fall. relying on AMD will be a huge mistake.

- The games; such as FFXIV & FFXV, Watch Dogs, ACIV, Killzone, and it's not stopping there.
- Less importance on graphics; now games could focus on more on story and gameplay mechanics to keep the player hooked.
- Gaikai service; since older games will eventually be streamable. Remembering it's history is very important.
- Social aspect; this will the closest to having a friend by your side so they can watch the game you're playing in case they're indecisive on purchasing it.
- Respect of privacy; the option to maintain only our PSN names and not our real-life names is sacred.
- Brand Loyalty; I've been with PlayStation since I was seven.. I'm not passing up on it so easily.

I see another reason to buy a PS4, if you believe in quality that is a very good reason. I think there are some things Sony is very good at making. One thing I think it rather fun to call someone a "FANBOY" when most don't even know what a true "Fanboy" is. What is a something of this idea people call others. Oh is it cause you follow one console. You bash one console and follow so headstrong for another.

I have been keeping up with Sony since I been a child of 8 yrs old. Loved their TVs as a kid cause the sound quality was so great as well as they last for years and years. I had an Atari, Nintendo/snes, didn't touch a 64. Hated the control. I also had Sega Saturn and the Dreamcast. Then Sony brought in the first Playstation I was sold. And purchased the other two that followed. Now a PS4 is lurking. I will have it as well. I will admit I never had a Xbox cause I didn't like the games they had. Have the time the PS3 had the same game so what was the point. PS+ is by far the better than XBL. I say that cause you get more for what you paid for. The only thing about XBL is the security but that is about to change if Sony does it right Sony will be on par with XBL.

Then what, all the "XBoys" will get all pissy. No need to get all bent outta shape. MS messed themselves up. Now they aim to fix themselves since the whole E3 thing. I'm sorry but how they do things is just rude towards the Consumers. I like Sony but if they were ever rude to their Consumers they would loose out on a lot as well. But if many want to follow those that are rather rude to you, in my opinion you don't respect yourself at all. Stop giving people that don't care about you your hard earned cash. People need to wake up and realize what is going on. Peace out.

I wish we could stop calling it "off-the-shelf" computer parts - especially on a Sony fansite - just because it is based on a common architecture.

You can't walk to a store, pick some parts from the shelves and mount them back home and you got a PS4 system. Ergo, it's per definition not "off-the-shelf".

If you had read any of the articles in regards to the technology behind the PS4 that we've linked to on numerous occasions in the comments field and the forum these last months, you'd know this. So please, stop calling it "off-the-shelf" computer parts like the PS4 is just a stationary PC in a different wrapping. It's not. It is still a specialized gaming console only this time based on a common architecture, that is what it is.

That said, there's absolutely no reason to expect lesser reliability from a common architecture than it is from an exotic architecture. There's no relation: A good quality production line makes good reliable products, a cheap production line makes cheap unreliable products. Most high performance, critical computer systems today are based on the x86 platform so there's no technical reason why a mere gaming console can't be stable as a rock. That's all up to the engineers and the allowed production cost.

Well Ben, by the way you yourself then worry that it must mean shitty parts and poor production qualities, I must say Sony are doing themselves a really big disfavour by choosing such a term.

Furthermore I believe it is not correct.
You can not go to a computer store, ask for this and that part, head home and build a PS4 yourself. That is how I understand the term.

But I guess that compared to how they were used to have it with their Cell architecture, it must now be insanely much more easy to be on the market for having these parts manufactured, since basically every single computer factory in the entire world can offer production lines for x86, and that's what they mean by "off-the-shelf". I guess...

My impression was that GaiKai would allow play of PS2 and PS1 titles in addition to PS3.

It will be very interesting to see how exactly the back end of GaiKai will work. Especially considering the way the PS3 titles were programmed for the cell they can't just use any old server. Either they'll have to be custom build PS3 servers or there will be rooms full of PS3's (ex. Warhawk) to handle everything.

Wait a while, take your gaming sessions slow & easy with a back catalog - play on the hardest settings so you die a lot more & learn more about the game & work on your strategy. I enjoy setting the enemies in the game against each other, see them destroy each other, then move in & finish off the stragglers (ie - SKYRIM, BIOSHOCK, BORDERLANDS)etc. Anyone else out there who likes to balance their wallet rather than a spoiled YUPPIE who always has to have things straight away - yes I'm talking about you 'ifish')lol!

That's very frugal of you, but not everyone who enjoys the hobby is a miser. Some people, God forbid, buy a game they've really wanted for months (even years) on day one.

And I sense bitterness for people who, you know, work a lot and might have some money. Just because someone has more than you doesn't make them a "spoiled yuppie." Although I know that's a very popular theory these days.

I don't have a ton of disposable income, but I have a little. Everything I've got is because I worked and continue to work my ass off. It also helps that I invest smart and employ networking strategies to improve my reputation in my local industry. People know me, and that gets me interviews.

I hardly think I'm a spoiled yuppie because I know how to work hard and how to efficiently direct my attention. Everything's an investment dude, and while I was in school full time, I had next to nothing. I didn't get anything new ever, like you, but I sure as hell wished I could when, say, the new FF came out. I didn't get to touch FFX until FFX-2 had already been released!

Do you know how painful that was for a diehard FF fan like me?

So now, I can occasionally afford something new. And I'm -proud- of it. Hippy. ;p

Mark Cerny.

His obvious passion for designing a console for gamers, and game designers. The philosophy of asking what should be included in the design, and then doing it. Embracing indie developers, and making it easier for them to design and market for the console. Integrating the Vita as a valuable adjunct to the PS4.

I was on the fence about "needing" a next gen console...then I watched Sony's presentation in February, and started reading up on the background of how it came to be. What Sony and Cerny are doing really is a generation change both in hardware and philosophy, and I'll support their decisions by buying a PS4.

I buy whichever system has the highest likelyhood of having the best (formerly only) version of the latest Final Fantasy or Street Fighter. For the past 17 (!) years, Sony has been my default system to go to. The only time this wasn't the case on one system was in the Saturn/PSX days, when Saturn had superior fighters while the PSX had Final Fantasy. If I didn't have roommates who had a Dreamcast I might have been tempted to pick up that system as well, but I did, so I didn't. :p And as it turns out, a number of fighters are apparently slightly better on X360 than PS3, but not enough to be a deal breaker like in the Saturn/PSX days. Plus, PS3 had the superior version of FFXIII (not a huge deal in hindsight, but still, no regrets).

With the coming generation, I expect the PS4 will be the "slightly better for multi-plats" system, so barring anything catastrophic, I will be continuing with the PS4 mainly because of brand loyalty. I AM looking forward to Remote Play working properly with Vita though.

That said, I won't plunk down the for the system until games I care about are released. Right now that list includes FFXV and Kingdom Hearts III, and neither is likely to be out before the end of 2014 (I'm expecting FFXV in Q4 2014, and KHIII in Q4 2015 or maybe Q1 2016), so it's doubtful I'll be getting a PS4 before then. None of the other games announced for PS4 so far interest me.

1. Brand loyalty and damn proud of it
2. DS4 controller cannot stand Microsoft's none-symmetrical analogs.
3. PSN ID/Level
4. PSVita Remote Play
5. Playstation Cloud/Gakai streaming
6. Exclusives
7. General feeling that Sony cares about gamers and not just the bottom line.
8. Unmatched Indie Support
9. PS4 hardware specs, 8GB GDDR5 only 1GB needed for OS which means 7GB for gaming with 176GB/s system memory bandwidth!, AMD Jaguar CPU, 1152 GPU Cores, 1.84 TFLOPS, separate architecture for Playstation Cloud/Gakai, Remote Play and downloads, easier for devs to get on board right away. Spoke to devs to find out what they really wanted and gave it to them.
10. Playstation Eye not included which means it's not forced on me and I can decide to buy it at later time. Also, that $60 will go to another game.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. In other words it's great to be on the winning side! :)

At one time I would have said: "Next gen Square Enix games!"
That's still a factor, just not my number one reason since I kind of expect each new game in the Final Fantasy series to just disappoint me.

Exclusives.

At the moment, that exclusive is inFamous: Second Son. Naughty Dog, Quantic Dream, Sony Santa Monica, Insomniac Games (no, they're not exclusive to Microsoft now), Project Siren, SCE Japan Studio (Team Ico hopefully), etc. and many more exclusive games will make me purchase a PS4.

Hardware's great too and so are the features but for me it's all about the games. PlayStation Plus is a great service too.

Can't wait for next-gen.

Yeah, I think Insomniac has a lot to prove. They have released some terrible games recently. They cannot rest on their past triumphs. What have they done for us lately?

Attitude.

Sony and Microsoft are both commercial companies trying to make some profit, but Sony's attitude - at least at this point in time - is much better than Microsoft's.

Mainly because I'm used to PlayStation gaming and they seem to do a solid job still. Unlike Final Fantasy which has collapsed.

Gaming has changed... it's no longer about ideology or ethnicity. It's an endless battle fought by mercenaries or machines.

Ahem anyway, I probably won't buy a PS4 until an amazing exclusive comes out.
