Sony Delayed PSVR To Better Respond To Heightened Demand

As most gamers know, Sony had prepared to launch PlayStation VR in the first half of 2016.

But as we learned earlier this month, the new virtual reality initiative for PlayStation 4 won't be here until October. Why?

Well, according to a new Nikkei report (as translated by GamesIndustry.biz), it all came down to sales expectations. SCE executive vice president Masayasu Ito said that in the wake of recently boosted sales projections, Sony realized they wouldn't be able to meet demand if they wanted to stick with the original release window. So, they pushed it into the fall to give the company more manufacturing time. Also, PlayStation boss Adam Boyes told GameSpot that the PSVR October launch would give Sony a "nice runway" into the holiday session.

Though not official, an unspecified source claims Sony expects to ship 1-2 million PSVR headsets by the end of the calendar year, and PS4 should hit 40 million in 2016 as well. The PSVR launch bundle went on sale on March 22 but it might be hard to find now, and we know it sold out fast overseas.

Our latest poll said interest in PSVR isn't crazy high but perhaps this community is an anomaly. :)

Dont let them lie to you. They didnt delay anything for any reason other than to cause hype to get people to buy this .....fad. Hurry! We are almost sold out! By now or suffer!

Yeah. Gonna pass on it.

Part of me wants to go all conspiracy theorist and assume that it was delayed so they could rush out a marginally more powerful PS4 to handle some computational shortfall with PS VR they didn't expect or properly account for.

But it's probably not that.

This may be a little off topic but, how is the PSVR different from the Oculus Rift?

It's not quite as advanced technology-wise and that's it. Like a console vs a PC in what it can output.

If true it was a good idea because the library would have been too small anyhow. I hope the Until Dawn game is ready sooner rather than later.

You'll notice the bundles are all gone now and they are selling core headset preorders.

I don't believe Sony here. What's the harm in being sold out? That'd only boost the hype, if something is hard to get it becomes just so much more interesting.

No, I suspect this to just be a marketing spin.

Supply and demand... Businesses gotta meet it.

But yeah this is totally marketing. I agree.
