Xbox One Focused On Advertising, But What About PS4?

First, the news:

Key members of Microsoft's UK Xbox Live Advertising team have told StickTwiddlers that the Xbox One was built "with advertising in mind."

It was revealed that all ads created for the platform must work with both a standard Xbox controller and the mandatory Kinect camera. The technical account manager said that "Xbox is moving outside of the bedroom" and with so many people watching one big screen, "advertising is being consumed in a totally different way." And while they say they're integrating ads so they'll be somewhat less intrusive, they did arrive at the following disturbing conclusion:

"On Xbox, the ad is part of the actual experience."

Now, all companies require advertisement in some capacity. So while we assume Sony would take a different approach, what are you expecting from the PS4 in terms of ad pushing? As the Xbox One will be able to deliver "contextually relevant ads" (something I find immensely creepy), will Sony consider doing the same in the future? If it gets results for the competition, why wouldn't they? Is anyone a little worried about the PS4 sort of going down the same road?

Or are you confident that Sony will always put the games first, and the ads will never feel like "part of the experience?"

They can plaster their ads all over the free sh*t all they want, but if I'm paying them for a service it had better be ad-free.

MS is showing their plan for the Xbox all along, infiltrate and manipulate: The 1984 OrwellBox.

EA started plastering menu advertisements in Battlefield 3. Kind of annoying. Making me think twice before getting Battlefield 4.

I noticed that too. I freaking hate it. I paid $60 plus $50, and I'm still getting ads? "One of the best games of the generation, DEAD SPACE 3" -GameInformer. Such BS.

I wonder if the ads are region specific, the only ads I see on the BF3 home menu are for other EA games. Not super thrilled with those, but I would would be pretty pissed if it was for some other company like Doritos, Burger King or Wal-mart.

The ads in mine are from EA too. I agree it would be worse if it were non EA products but when I first saw Madden being advertised in the BF3 menu it was off putting.

I agree on no ads for pay service. I just hope down the road that we dont have breaks during a game like movie intermissions.

As long as the ads are on the sides my eyes will filter all of that but if there any pop ups then I will have problems.

Additionally -- play offline there are no ads. As always, I will be playing mostly single player games.

I don't mind ads how they are done on PS3, hidden away in areas or scrolled along the top, but I do not want an ad box like the Xbox One is shaping up to be.
I was actually called an idiot on another forum for not wanting ads shoved in my face since apparently that's the way of the future...of course no doubt it was a MS fanboy who would take anything MS shoves down their throat.

You say that but it has been happening on the internet for years. I have 12 companies potentially trying to view my web browser blocked even on this page... But to have this fear of privacy brought over to consoles is rather concerning.

I do not mind advertisements showing on PS4's XMB equivalent. But if they start interupting what I am doing I am then going to get furious. For example playing ads when you boot up a game. Or having to watching a video when you navigate on the PS Store... I hope they keep some sense in mind when they bring this on.

As for the Xbox, hearing advertising and Kinnect within the same sentence makes me feel generally uneasy. To be honest its the biggest reason I am choosing the PS4 over the Xbox.

I hardly watch anything on youtube now because of the forced ads before almost every single video! Microsoft admitting that XB1 is built around advertising cements the fact I'm never buying One. If Sony does it any different than the way they do now, I will have serious doubts about ever getting a PS4.

Seems the gaming world is taking the same philosophy as the cable TV giants...Pay for cable get ads. If you can remember, back in the 80's and 90's TV was over the air and included channels which had ads. When cable came out, you paid more for it but it was so that you didn't have to watch ads...currently, this is a different story. All you get with "paid" cable is ads and you have to pay even more for channels that do not have ads (ie HBO, Showtime, etc).

As for the gaming world, I have started to see ads during my boot screens in PC games but have not seen as much in my PS3 (at least not any intrusive advertisement).

Even if M$ gets away with adding intrusive ads, which they probably will (and just another reason stacked on top of hundreds as to why you SHOULD NOT buy the Xbox One) I feel as though Sony would not betray a "true hardcore gamer experience."

You know, my thesis was about videogame advertising (both inside the games, or outside of them) and you´ll be surprised about the amount of money we´re talking about. Only in-game, we´re talking about more than Hollywood´s budget based in a year-to-year comparative, and that fact speaks volumes. Examples of this kind of advertising as must of us now should know, are labels of cars or parts in Gran Turismo, clothes and sports shoes in Fifa, and so on. It even goes as far as dynamic advertising. For example, a panoramic ad in a building side in GTA that at certain hours display something and at other hour displays another thing, so basically you ad 2 things (at cheaper price) in the same virtual space.

I´m surprised they took so long to finally admit it. Microsoft is based in advertising. In the other hand, Sony focuses in games, gamers, services and advertising at the same time. And may I say, a more appealing kind of advertising. For example, just days ago, Polyphony in partnership with Sony, launched a demo based on a manufacturer label, in this case Nissan. At other time Uncharted was also in a short partnership with Toyota. Of course they also just ad for the sake of it, it is a necessary devil, but they do it in other direction, and showing aggressiveness in other topics and not in the amount of ads or to just throwing things out your face in every possible kind like microsoft does. Another example, and by the way I loved it, was just post-E3, the "steps to share a game in PS3", that was hilarious!

All that said, we see the companies guts and spirits every time things like this happens or are ventilated. And that is another reason why I love the Playstation brand, and dislike very much the XBOX. They are in the same direction, but are in a different path. And I hate when Playstation gets dragged by the xbox, for example in this generation specs and capacities: All the multiplat developers got pushed down by xbox capabilities, and those who say otherwise are wrong, and you know it.

Interesting. Didn't Burnout Paradise have live updated billboards for advertizing. I think that's perfectly okay. But if I'm walking down a corridor in something like the Last Of Us sequel or something and I see big signs repeated everywhere for "Earn Pepsi Points TO WIN BIG PRIZES" I'd be concerned.

Deary me, MS' PR machine really needs to get into gear. No-one likes ads, and the XB1's had enough bad press already - they should just stay quiet on the subject (or focus on them being less intrusive than they are now). Silly blighters. I'm sure PS4 will have ads as well, but hopefully like this gen, they're sequestered off, rather than dominating the landscape - navigating the XMB with its custom theme is far more enjoyable for me than wading through the X360 dash and it's multiple advertisements.

If I have to pay to log into the PSN and have accessto PSplus and still deal with ads Ill sell my PS4 or cancel my pre-order whichever comes first. The fact that tgis topic is even brought up frustrates the S*** out of me. MS is ruining gaming and people are blind to it. I just want to play games!

Well I work in advertising at the moment. But I cant see any reason for this. Microsoft are like the sellouts of the gaming industry. And their ad platform is a piece of shit, I hope they aren't using that as the basis for xbox one ad placements.

IF sony does get ads, then non intrusive banners only that do not disrupt my navigation or experience. I dont see it happening anyway. Ads arent cheap and neither is their platforms. If I start seeing pop ups or OTPs then I'll freak.

Okay. Ads... are a bit of sore spot for me. This is what I do not want Sony to do. And I am sure they won't. So take this with a bit of humour as well... possibly.

I go to the movies and already spend about 10 minutes or more in advertising before the movie starts. Not even trailers, but car commercials, drinks, banks, and trips. I pretend I have a controller to skup these when I am there.... but it does not work. I mean they already do a media pre-show of advertising and trivia. I just want to get to see the movie. If I knew I was paying for the advertising as well... if I skipped all that.. would I can a discount on my ticket?

The same with DVD/Blu-ray. All the frigging ads and trailers before I get to the main screen to play the movie. Some cases they allow you to skip them all, but many do not. They force you to endure the agony of "you paid for this. Now sit down and watch it you miserable consumer". Putting it politely.

OKAY... Sony, please do not do anything like this. If its a car games or something... put the ads in the game then... in the background, on a shelf, on a poster, a place flying over head advertising or a blimp. BUT NO ads before I actually get to the game screen to play. Nor ads when I do get to play, but really we have to show you the sponsor before you play.

Yes, I realize this is a different kind of advertising, but devs may get companies funding their game development and Sony may partner up with companies to adverse on their system in future.

Give us the choice to see it or not or at least out it in the background so it can be ignored.

Keep Playing! << insert cola ad here >>
