Final Fantasy XV News Recap, And All The Glittering Trailers

Yes, we all now know Final Fantasy XV is coming out on September 30 (yep, that rumor was accurate).

But Square Enix had a lot more to announce and show off at their big "Uncovered: Final Fantasy" event last night so if you missed any of it, here's the recap:

First up, the two very special editions: The first is the Deluxe Edition; priced at $89.99, it will contain the following, besides a copy of the game:

  • Steelbook case with Yoshitaka Amano art
  • Final Fantasy: Kingslaive feature film (which will also be available to stream or download before the game releases)
  • Royal Raiment outfit
  • Masamune weapon
  • Platinum Leviathan recolor for the in-game car

The second is the pricey but jam-packed Ultimate Collector's Edition, which will retail for a whopping $269.99 and include everything in the Deluxe Edition plus:

  • Hardcover 192-page artbook
  • A separate set of exclusive steelbook cases featuring the cast of the game
  • The Brotherhood anime on disk (which will stream for free over YouTube)
  • In-game travel pack
  • In-game camera kit
  • In-game angler kit
  • In-game gourmand set
  • Exclusive Play Arts Noctis figurine

Square Enix will only produce 30,000 units of the Ultimate set, so you better pre-order ASAP. And remember, this is exclusive to the publisher's online store so if you want it, head over there now.

Then, in perhaps the most encouraging news for the impatient crowd, Square Enix announced that a brand new free FFXV demo is now available for sampling. Dubbed the "Platinum Demo," players will assume the role of a young Noctis, and they'll be guided through a dreamscape by a cute little creature called Carbuncle (hey, FF fans know him!). The idea is to give players a chance to see the game's finished graphics, and also introduce them to the finalized combat and magic systems. Once you're done with the demo, you can assign Carbuncle a new name if you wish, and then he'll be usable as a Summon in the final product.

But it didn't end there. Square Enix revealed a full-length feature film designed specifically for FFXV. "Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV" was directed by Takeshi Nozue (co-director of "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children"), and it will launch this summer via digital distribution, so yeah, it'll be here before the game. The film will star some big names, too; Aaron Paul ("Breaking Bad"), Lena Headey ("Game of Thrones"), and Sean Bean ("The Lord of the Rings"). The story in the movie will start directly after Noctis and his friends set off on their adventure, and we'll see a few crossover characters as well.

Lastly, there's a new mobile game in the works called Justice Monsters Five and it acts as a FFXV tie-in. This will be available for both iOS and Android platforms. Okay, enough talk; how's about some awesome media?!

Two very slim special editions that are very expensive? One special that costs as much as a console? A movie? A new demo out of the blue that ties into the main game?

This all adds up to something that looks a lot like trying way too hard to make sure the game looks like its gonna be something very special. It reeks of Batman v Superman.

The game is going to sell like crazy, for some reason theres alot more hype for this then there was for 13 and the sequels. As for the movie I havent seen it yet (doubt I'll see it), I dont' think I can stomach a super hero movie after The Avengers put me in a sleeping coma.

I don't think it's as much trying too hard as it is probably the most passionate FF game they have develop. You know with Japanese, when they're passionate it'll show.

@daus26 I think they are passionately desperate not to fail this time (think of all the times they asked us what to do with the game).

@Hexen I don't think it will sell like crazy unless the reviews are good because the FF name has been dragged through the latrine. It went from double digit millions per entry to 1 million in sales via the action trend. So we shall see how crazy it sells.

Watched the whole stream live and loved every moment of it besides the cringe-worthy pre-show.

I was primarily glad that they actually had a lot to show/give to those who have been waiting for FFXV ever since it was announced 9.75 years ago.

While it may not be "Final Fantasy" to some - I feel like it'll be an awesome game, which is why I seriously can't wait. Still kind hoped that Nomura would be directing it.

Also to add a big of missing detail regarding the Ultimate Collector's Edition - there is a 6th episode of BROTHERHOOD exclusive to that collection. So it's not going to be streamed and you can only get it via that edition. Of course...I guess it'll be out sometime after that.

I finished the Demo and explored everything I could, collected 402 shard things and fought the end boss 3 times.

Game feels like an RPG not an action game. It is like a combination of Kingdom Hearts and Crisis core and it feels pretty good. There is a bit of an input delay but that to me makes it feel like more of an RPG, it feels like you have to be more methodical.

In fact mashing screwed me over on the boss fight, my twitch skills didn't mean anything. I had to be very deliberate with my actions.

This game is definitely an RPG. Unless there isn't an ounce of characters progression, and items and gear in the main game then this demo has confirmed what I have been saying this whole time.

FF15 is an RPG not an action game.

Dude, WTF. This demo was horrifically bad. Compared to any other action game or action/RPG in the past decade, it blows. Even the original Kingdom Hearts was smoother.

The camera sucks because it sits way too close, there's visible hitching when the camera spins many times, the input lag is there and no, that doesn't make it "feel like an RPG" because there's no such thing in polished action/RPGs like The Witcher or Kingdom Hearts or Mass Effect, or whatever. This game came out tomorrow and it gets a 4. Honestly. It's THAT bad. I haven't played a game that controlled and moved this badly since the PS2 days.

And I miss the RPG part. Where is it? You equip stuff? Collect stuff? I do that in every action game I play now. Hell, Assassin's Creed is far more role-playing than this appears to be. Just because you can't button-mash doesn't magically turn it into an RPG; you can't button-mash in most action games and get anywhere (DmC as only one example).

This demo has confirmed what I'VE been saying the whole time. It's JUNK.

@Ben

The demo was a demo, right? I've seen you review demos before, you're usually positive about them, If this was not called FF you would have said that the graphics look amazing, the size of the enemies up close really get you into the game and the music compliments the pace of the action beautifully, but there are issues with the camera and control that hopefully will be resolved in the finalized game. Since It's called Final Fantasy, It's Junk

Now, if you're saying It's not an RPG (Well, action RPG)... What is Zelda to you? What was Crisis Core? Cause It seems that this game has more customization, collectibles and gameplay and enhancement mechanics than those games. As far as I remember, that coupled with story and character development is what makes an RPG.

Maybe you should calm down and just wait for September, I don't know if this is going to be great or even good, though I'm hopeful. I'm pretty sure It won't be Junk, or get a 4, not even in your review.

The witcher to me has one of the shallowest gameplay mechanic. I can't believe it'd be as praised as much here compared to this game.

I swear, the whole action thing is getting tiring. This isn't a button mash action game. There's timing and you have to keep track of your mps and what not. Have you not played action games before or something? If this relates to God of War more than Kingdom Hearts to you or other action rpg, you've lost me. You're beyond recovery.

Also, you'd really base the whole game from a demo? A 4??? There's no way I'll be trusting your review, not that you'd care or anything. But your hate is real. Just relax.

All of you need to give it a rest. And if you haven't played it, then you REALLY need to shut up.

I've been reviewing games for a very long time. I give games I despise very high scores (Fallout 4 is a great example of that). If you choose to ignore this, that's fine; doesn't change the fact that I'd do the same for FFXV. If it was worthy of a 9 and I hated it, it'd still get a 9, just like countless other games I've reviewed. My completely objective assessment of this demo is right here:

It's just terrible. It doesn't matter what it's called; if it was called Kingdom Hearts, it'd be terrible; if it was The Witcher 4, it'd be terrible. The controls are POOR. The jumping is erratic and unreliable; I have serious questions about the collision detection when dodging, the camera sits too close and as such, visibility is seriously hampered. The lock-on is far from perfect. The level design (at least in this demo) is mediocre.

People want to bash AC? Idiotic. It moves like a modern game, it plays like a modern game, and it exhibits more depth in the first hour than this demo does. If we're being honest, FFXV plays like a PS2 game with its lack of mechanical polish. And what about this makes it an RPG? The fact that damage points show up? Is that it? Equipping different weapons to the d-pad is very common in action games; hell, you even equip magic to the d-buttons and then aim and fire as you would with a ranged weapon.

Just about every action/adventure game in the past few years has more RPG elements than this demo. Yes, it is a demo so I expect more in the final game but nothing in this demo screams RPG. It's action/adventure, as all our other games are right now, basically.

And lastly, when Square Enix says this demo is so people can test out the FINALIZED GRAPHICS AND COMBAT AND MAGIC SYSTEMS, yes, I'm allowed to pass judgment on those. End of story.

Ben, this isn't a question to edge you on and defend yourself. But I am genuinely curious as to what in your definition is an RPG.

I would love to see an article about the distinction between Kingdom Hearts being an RPG, and FFXV not being an RPG when it's out.

Again - not a question that's meant to question your "love" for a game or anything - I could not care less if you hated the game as that has absolutely nothing to do with me and the game.

I am more curious as to what makes you consider something an Action RPG vs an Action game. You can reply to this and explain below - but I would appreciate it more if you could write an article about it after FFXV is actually out. So in half a year.

Ben you are crazy. I'm not even going to get into a debate with you. You are so off base in your criticisms.

Your hate for this game is unreasonable, unprofessional and childish.

For a "professional" reviewer you really let your emotions get in the way of seeing this game clearly.

I'm not going to go point for point with you and prove to you how you are objectively wrong, and how other RPGs have similar control mappings. Its a waste of time, you have made up your mind.

And you still think Mass Effect 2 and 3 are RPGs and not shooters, give me a break.

Lets all remember the definition of an RPG has changed a lot and the lines between genres are blurring.

This is an RPG in its combat system end of story.

xenris, you're clueless about RPGs. That much has been made clear in the past. You can't name a single reason WHY FFXV qualifies as an RPG. You haven't yet and you can't, because there isn't one, aside from seeing the damage numbers pop up. Every single other element can easily be found in any game that we call an action/adventure today, from GTA to AC to Watch Dogs.

You think that because you have to be careful about HOW you press your buttons that this makes it an RPG? That's strategic ACTION. Let me ask you this: Would it really matter which weapon and which magic you used in this demo? Would it matter what you equipped? Ooh, the hammer does more damage than the sword; yeah, I had that distinction in God of War. You could still win with anything; you just have to be better dexterity-wise, depending on your selection. The final boss fight is a perfect example of that, as it has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with preparation, micromanagement, etc. RPGs put the brain first and the fingers second and that is absolutely not what is happening here. I'm sure there will be more depth in the final game but the FOCUS is clear. And the worst part?

It controls like piss. It just does. I haven't seen a game with worse mechanics in a long time and if you weren't so unbelievably blind, you would admit you haven't, either. This is one hot mess of a demo mechanics-wise, from the shitty camera and lock-on system to the horrid lag and erratic jump mechanics, and you're actually saying that the lagging and other significant issues are okay because it's an RPG...I mean, WTF. It's allowed to suck on an action level because it's not action? What kind of bizarre circular logic is that? I know quality, whether you choose to believe it or not, and I'm hardly the only one to say that this demo is ATROCIOUS.

shadowpal: Kingdom Hearts and FFXV are action/RPGs, as are games like The Witcher and Fallout. Most games that use the label "RPG" today are action/RPGs. Some put a heavier emphasis on one genre or the other but just about all have elements from both. I hate Fallout but I know it's generally a top-quality product. The Elder Scrolls is another example, and both have extremely in-depth systems that ground them firmly in the role-playing structure.

On the Japanese side, there are the Atelier, Tales, Star Ocean, and Persona games, which are definite RPGs. Nobody can play these for a half-hour and then tell me they should be in the same genre as FFXV. It'd be impossible to come to that conclusion. Not like xenris has any experience with any of this, but whatever. Anyone defending this demo has no idea what they're looking at, and anyone who calls it a straight-up RPG has never played one.

End of story.

Alright, fair enough - I consider it an action/RPG myself. I was thinking for a moment that you considered KH to be more RPG than FFXV - but if you consider them both action/RPGs - i see the logic there.

The only legitimate RPG which I'm excited for this year is Persona 5. I can't wait for that either.

I'm not going to waste my time Ben.

You gave ME3 RPG of the year award, the game is a cover shooter with very lite RPG mechanics.

So who doesn't know what an RPG is again?

As a final point, plenty of "professional" reviewers are loving the demo, from IGN to gamespot, to Kotaku. Fans and critics alike are enjoying it.

It's just laughable that you call ME3 "a shooter with lite RPG" elements when the amount of exhibited depth in any Mass Effect is about a million times more apparent than in this FFXV demo.

All I asked was a simple question: Please name something about this demo that implies it's an RPG. You flat-out said it isn't action and it's role-playing and NOBODY who has any experience with the RPG genre has any idea what you're talking about. I'm going to guess that FFXV is indeed an action/RPG because there's a lot more depth than what was shown here, but I'm merely talking about the demo.

And I really can't believe you didn't notice the horrific controls and general mechanics. How could anybody miss that?

It's futile to argue you, I've learned this over the years I've been coming here. That being said.

ME3 is a shooter, it is completely unnecessary to level up in order to beat the game and it is easier if you don't. It is a shooter with bare bones RPG elements.

This game is an RPG in the same way that the Witcher is an RPG, Dark Souls is an RPG, Kingdom hearts is an RPG and Crisis Core is an RPG.

I noticed having to monitor my MP fighting the iron giant, monitoring the MP while using warp strikes and dodges, and the magic it all felt like an action RPG to me.

I'm well aware it is a hybrid, every game is a hybrid except for a few rare games that are showing up on steam.

I don't understand how a seasoned gamer like yourself had trouble with the controls. This statement you make is similar to one I had with a dozen people when Demons Souls came out. People criticized its control design, and said it was clunky slow, poorly designed etc. It is just meant to be played a certain way.

I had no problems playing this, dodging is easy and not erratic, tap the button to dodge roll, hold it to evade. Hold to attack.

It plays very similar to KH2 but it isn't as hyper and fast. Its like a mix of KH1 and 2.

The jaggies were a bit annoying as well. Apparently this game runs on a variable resolution too. Which is weird. I'm having a hard time understanding why they're struggling to maintain a consistent frame rate when the graphics are nothing to right home about. Besides some of the spectacular lighting, I wasn't overly impressed with the presentation. Kinda lacking for a AAA Final Fantasy game. Other than that though I liked the combat mostly. I'm interested to see how it expands.

I think it was the little things like when Noct gets wet his hair dampens and the tiny tiny details like the freckles and stuff. There's a lot of attention to detail but I think they are not very good at optimizing those details.

Optimization always is the last thing to fix, so I'm hoping they will have the framerate locked in by September.

As far as I am concerned S-E knocked it out of the park with the Uncovered event. I honestly felt it was flawless. Usually I hate the idea of 'Cinematic Universes' as it often leads to a flood of irrelevant content that no one wants. But the concept of the KingsGliave movie sounds fantastic and I am really looking forward to it. The Anime also seemed decent.

I have yet to play the demo but considering it is a freebie, I don't see how anyone can winge, it's not meant to be this full-fledged experience. i have yet to play it as I am waiting for a friend to visit and experience it with, but I am curious and looking forward to it still.

The recipe for success for any Final Fantasy is quite simple.

1. Great story
2. Unique characters with unique personalities (still skeptical about this boy band dressed in black)
3. Plenty of dungeons and towns you can explore
4. Chocobos, summons (I prefer to call GF, FF8 ftw), traditional FF monsters etc.
5. Great fighting system with roots of old games. Something like FF12 and Ni-no-Kuni would be ideal.

It shouldn't take rocket science to figure those things out.

Which means for certain fights and bosses, switching out 4 weapons with 2 weapons 2 magics, or any combination of the 4 would be a strategic option.

We already learned enemies will be weak to elements, and the environment will also be able able to be affected by the magic. Water will freeze, gas will set on fire etc.

This is all to be used to beat hard enemies.

Of course they're awful. The entire gameplay system is awful.

Yeah, I like turn based too, but it has to have quick load times.

I think the biggest factor for me is I hate if the game has lots of random or even map based encounters, well loading in and out of the arenas eventually drives me nuts. Unless everything if fast and smooth.

All I can think about is S-E's next move with the franchise after they realize they're going to lose 10's of millions of dollars.

Even if this game sold 30 million copies it wouldn't make up for what they put into it, and I figure it might sell 3 million. So yeah, what can they do next? Why not just TRY going back to what worked?

My hype for this game and its storyline and lore is off the roof. Time will tell if the gameplay pulls it down, especially the endgame.

On the road to being the greatest video game campaign a company has ever spent $$ Gil $$ on running.

I'd consider those since 13 to be failures sales wise. So yes, I think it will based on that trend. They had said 10 million would be considered a success, I don't think it gets there.

Depends on how you measure success.
