Uncharted 4 Will Feel A Lot Like The Last Of Us, And That's OK

As we near the launch of arguably the most anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive of the generation, we're starting to hear from those who have already played Naughty Dog's new adventure.

And you know, it sounds an awful lot like the developer's other gem, The Last Of Us.

Personally, I think it's a good thing. When I first played TLoU, I thought to myself, "this is the logical and proper evolution of the linear, story-driven, third-person adventure." It had more exploration than the standard Uncharted quest, there was more strategy involved (via strong stealth and survival elements), and overall, it just seemed like a step forward for that particular genre. Therefore, I'm not surprised at all to hear from people who say they've spotted a clear TLoU influence in Uncharted 4. After all, don't forget that several key members of the TLoU team came to work on Drake's final adventure, so again, it should come as no big shock.

But more importantly, if true, this would be the perfect example of a developer advancing and pressing forward while staying within the genre of the franchise. Over the years, from Resident Evil to Final Fantasy to Metal Gear Solid, fans have butted heads over the proper way to push such legendary IPs forward. Frankly, though, it has never been that difficult in my mind. Forget the morons who just say people who complain are "stuck in the past" and "never want change." If you choose not to listen (or read, whatever), that's your business, but the overwhelming majority of fans never say they "don't want anything to change."

We're not fools. We know things have to change in order for the IP and the industry as a whole to stay fresh and relevant. We also know that changing the inherent structure of the game, to the point where it absolutely is a different genre and not merely an evolution of the existing genre, is wrong. It rarely, if ever, works, and only leads to problems. Ask Capcom and Square Enix. Even Konami and the masterful Kojima, who produced the excellent Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, got flak for making a MGS that didn't feel like a MGS (mostly due to the narrative taking a back-seat, a cornerstone of the franchise).

But Naughty Dog appears to have struck the proper balance with Uncharted 4. They've adapted to a changing industry - and as such, changing player demands - while still remaining faithful to the spiritual core of the franchise. Obviously, the new Uncharted will still be Uncharted, with bombastic set pieces and an emphasis on action, which wasn't what TLoU was about. However, gameplay and design elements of the latter will almost definitely be in play, and that makes perfect sense. It's a logical evolution. Certain Japanese developers might want to take notes.

Cool. Though I'm not happy they stuck with the loose controls from Uncharted but maybe that because the tighter controls on the last of us wouldn't work too well in a game like uncharted.

There's a whole hell of a lot in Last of Us that won't work in Uncharted. I'm hoping that what we get is is less "The Last of Uncharted" and more "Uncharted". If not, then I'll be disappointed and avoid. I wish developers would sto screwing with what works.

Thats great news to me, I hope they keep the Michael Bay explosions and jumping at the last minute and landing at the edge of a cliff on one hand to a minimum if possible.

I think that trick only works once, in that specific way, but they should find new ways to do it.

Also wanted to add that by Michael Bay explosions I mean random explosions that serve no purpose whatsoever and are there just to flash colors in our faces.I confident Naughty Dog won't be guilty of this.

Just keep the stealth-in-which-they-know-where-you-are-right-away, bad combat, and spawning enemies out of my Uncharted.

Not enjoying hearing that. The last of Us is a very different animal to Drake. If it changes too much, this game will be a solid fail for me. It's fine to talk about developers progressing, but dammit when you toss out the original creative force behind a flagship franchise and bring in a new team, you hope that they at least stick to the spirit of the original franchise instead of cutting and pasting their own franchise into it.

Honestly if Naughty Dog has allowed this new creative team to go all JJ Abrahms on Drake, they won't get my money.

Oh, and Bem, I disagree about the idea that certain Japanese develoeprs should take note. First of all it remains to be seen whether ND have screwed up Uncharted by ditching the original creative force and bringing in their own JJ and Abrahms pair. Secondly, as I said in another comment, developers of successful franchises should take note, fans of their flagship franchises don't want re-imagined reboots or imitations of other games, they want what the franchise has always brought. In other words, don't screw with what works.

They are still going for a strong linear story driven game (with perhaps different pathways to get to the same destination).

That still sounds like Uncharted to me, although I'm not quite sure exactly what element of "Last of us" is being considered here.

Also, you seem to be a "vote with the wallet" type of guy. Would you honestly be willing to skip out on the final Uncharted game if things don't live up to your expectations? And what exactly are they?

This is one of the most important games for me thus far in this generation (after MGSV/but that was a disappointment) so I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I agree with you on this "if it ain't broke don't fix it."

While TLOU and Uncharted are similar in presentation and somewhat similar in atmosphere they are two separate genres.

TLOU - survival horror game.
Uncharted - action adventure game.

The thing which I appreciate about Uncharted compared to all the other western campaign focused games out there is that it still manages to keep the game FUN and not too serious. I'm not saying serious is bad...but you need a damn good story such as TLOU to have a good serious tone to the game.

But besides atmosphere the concept of TLOU was more along the lines of "be on your feet - cautious- dont get greedy - takes whats only absolutely necessary - get prepared for anything"

Whereas Uncharted has always had a more high-action, cut-through hope for the best ...expect Drake to make a few jokes and somehow live through to make it to the other part of the chapter.

They are 2 separate genres - I don't see how one can "EVOLVE" into the other without really changing the game.

GTA evolving with GTA III from GTA 2 - was an absolutely substantial change for the better...but this just has strange written all over it.

Well, I could definitely feel a last of us influence in the multiplayer beta. I wouldn't mind if it still felt like uncharted but brought over some of the mechanics that worked so well in the last of us. I just hope it stays light hearted and keeps the spirit of Drake. I don't want it to be too serious.
