When PS4K Comes Out, What Will Make You Buy It Day 1?

For the time being, few really seem to like the idea of an updated PlayStation 4 console, apparently launching later this year.

The PS4K - or "PS4 Neo" as it's being called now - has been ticking off fans of the brand since the rumors began. The idea of being forced to upgrade only a few years into a console cycle isn't something console owners are used to.

Of course, maybe we shouldn't use the word "forced" because it's not like the new system will play all-new games, and it's not a full step up, so it shouldn't feel like a whole new generation of hardware. There's a disagreement as to just how big this step will be; some say the effect the extra power has on things like frame rate and resolution is more than significant, while others say we probably won't notice much.

Then there's the very vocal contingent that believes it's really only a ploy to get more people to buy either PlayStation VR or a 4K TV (despite the fact that even the new PS4 won't be able to handle native 4K output). If it really only has a big effect on VR, many current PS4 owners might not care. But what happens when the comparison videos start showing up online, putting PS4 and PS4K versions of the same game side by side? Will the difference be glaring enough to make current PS4 owners feel as if they're missing out? That they have to pay another $400 (or whatever) if they want an obviously better experience?

I guess the real question is: What will make you spring for the updated PS4 right out of the gate? Would you have to be one of the early PlayStation VR adopters? Do you think you'll easily notice and very much appreciate the better tech? And what about cost? If it's over a certain amount, are you just going to wait?

As of now I'm just going to buy it. I'm hoping they offer current consumers some sort of kick back or trade in. But if not I'll sell my current PS4 to get it. I'm OCD and wouldn't be able to handle knowing my neighbor might have a better version.

That's also why I hate this move. The best thing I could do us no support it but I know I'd be in the minority. So I'm going for it.

Honestly, I love the idea! If I can get a PS4 with more robust specs that offers a solid 1080p/60FPS and it doesn't fragment the 42 million PS4 owners I think it's a win/win. A bonus would be if it can upscale to 4K! Sony isn't forcing anyone to buy the PS4K. Everyone has a choice. I look at it like Sony is catering to hardware enthusiasts. If Sony doesn't offer PS4K exclusives then no one should be bothered by this. If you just bought a PS4 then return it or trade it in. If graphics or performance doesn't bother you then stay put with your PS4. Change is good especially this change. There is no reason why every generation has to follow the same stale longevity. Consoles will still be easy to use but we will now have more choice. Of course we still need to hear from Sony first otherwise this is just another rumor.

I wouldn't be able to play in piece knowing that while I play for example a Heavently Sword 2 in 1080p 30fps, someone else is enjoying it with better textures and in 60fps.

The fact that I still don't have a PS4 would be the reason for a D1 purchase.
So we are going from a console that can almost handle 1080p to one that can almost handle 4K?...

No, PS4 can more than handle 1080p.

PS4 can handle 1080p. It handles 4k for video currently just not games.

Yes it can. Some devs just can't do it with very hard hitting graphics pushes.

That's all developers and not what the console can actually do.

It would take my PS4 being crushed by an imaginary giant chicken.

That said, I'll have to buy it at some point anyway. Like some others, it's a matter of A: being ready to have a second PS4 system in the house and B: Not being able to be the guy with the lesser sh*t. That'd be like having an Xbox One.

Have you seen the petition started for Sega to license a Dreamcast 2 designed by the community? I doubt it will go anywhere but I would've expressed my doubt about the Neo had someone mentioned it a year ago.

I also have my doubts that Sega is in any kind of financial shape to pull this off.

Yes I am a part of that community, there is actual movement within it as well. We aren't quite sure what the DC2 would actually be, but the potential is amazing notwithstanding Sega's recent trouble making good games.

They were always best working in concert with developers to make great games, and an updated console that can play multiplats, sega exclusives, and all past sega games dititally (Dreamcast, Saturn, Genesis, Master system) would probably rock some worlds when people saw the actual lineup. (We know they are working on perfecting a proprietary Genesis emulator).

This is even more compelling when you see how Nintendo keeps falling and perhaps flailing with this new NX and Microsoft quietly begins to bow out of the game.

Solid 60fps on current games, not future NEO optimized games, current. And if and only IF Uncharted 4 runs @60fps on it, I might buy it too.

the younger me from maybe 6 or 7 years ago would have been tempted to buy it. id sell my current one and just wait it out. but as of now...no. just no. if its the same exact console just with 4k capabilities. no.

if our current ps4's are more than capable of handling vr, still no. unless the vr games run at unbearable frame rates then thatll be nothing but a turn off for me with vr and disregard it all together. unless sony is going to be greedy to ensure our current ps4s are....obsolete, then goodbye console gaming.

Hopefully the response is lackluster so we don't see a trend towards this sort of thing going forward.

I like console platforms being single tiered, refreshed every 5-6 years or so.

PS2 emulation in firmware able to play of the actual game discs if you have them. The more advanced GPU should make full emulation of the PS2 possible without any tailoring to suita a specific game.

Other than that, nothing will move me to buy one until we lose a PS4 to wear and tear.

Look, I don't mind paying Sony to play my PS2 games, but the selection of classics is, for want of a better word, shit. Now, if Sony would put the guts of a PS2 on a USB Stick that you plug into a PS4 to play PS2 game disks. I'd buy it. Heck, I'd buy two of them just to have a spare. Just make damn sure that I can play the physical discs I still have, and any of the PS2 classics that they sell on the PS Store.

Im tempted to get a PS2 again just to be able to play the arcade version of Tekken 3 that was included on the PS2's Tekken 5 disc.

Funny enough. Back then rumors were abound that Tekken 3 for PSX was going to be exclusive to the PSX Type C. The beefed up oft-rumored PSX that never happened.

The best way I've found to play Tekken 3 is on Dreamcast through Bleemcast with a VGA adapter and 1080p upscaler. It ramps up the graphics and framerate so far it blows you away.

But I can't say it's the arcade version. I just know I have a PS2 and no matter how you massage the graphics onto an HD TV it looks like garbage.

Sadly, Sony isn't smart enough to do that. Or maybe they are by making a console specific version of the same game that needs to be repurchased every time you get a next gen console and you want to play said game on said console.

Btw. A 2-3x increase in GPU isn't as big of deal as people may think.
The GPU difference between PS3 and PS4 was approximately 8x to 10x faster ( if I remember correctly). And that change brought with it a massive increase in GPU ram.

And does everyone feel like they're seeing games looking 8-10x better? Probably not. The difference is largely in the details.

Maybe 3-5 times better. Uncharted 4 will be my gauge comparing it to Uncharted 3.

I do however definitely feel like motion, physics and lighting is a whole lot better.

But I'm not a tech expert by any means. I can only say as much as I see. Why it happens on screen, I don't know beyond a certain extent.

Perfect PS2 emulation and a thousand dollar check. Yes, they'd have to pay me for it, I already have to deal with this enough with my PC, upgrading consoles defeats the purpose.
