Nintendo NX Set For 2017: Will I Become A Believer Again?

We still don't know anything about the system but Nintendo has at least confirmed that the code-named Nintendo NX will launch next year.

I'm trying to get excited. I really am.

As most people around here know, I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the SNES and there are several reasons for that. Early on, it was just because I was an RPG fiend and one didn't exactly turn to the N64 or GameCube to get their RPG fix (and yes, I know there were a few but it was a very few compared to PS1 and PS2). After that, it was a combination of a lack of quality - in my estimation, Nintendo consoles have specialized in shovelware for years - and my disillusionment with the Ninty mascots.

I won't say I "grew up" because that implies that Nintendo games are only for kids. I'll just say that maybe my tastes are different now that I'm older. However, this doesn't mean I wouldn't love to play certain great platformers; I really adore the Ratchet & Clank remake, for instance. That's just the kind of experience I'd expect from Nintendo, and I don't see why they can't give us great stuff like this on a routine basis. But above all else, if Nintendo wants me back, they're going to have to drop the fads and gimmicks and just give me a normal system.

No more motion sensing, no controllers with stupid screens or whatever, no pathetically updated version of an existing console (which is all the Wii U is); all I want is a new, relatively high-tech console with a regular ol' controller and a bunch of great games. I'd like to think this isn't too much to ask, but who knows what Nintendo is thinking with the NX? With virtually no info, it's tough to get excited...and yet, just because it's Nintendo, the company that first started me down this crazy path so many years ago, I feel obligated to at least pay attention.

And so I will. How about you?

This pisses me off. Nintendo screwed Wii U owners. It never got an exclusive Zelda.

Maybe the NX would do something with the whole VR thing + integrate it's motion related stuff. That makes for a logical 'next-gen' move for a wii based nintendo product.

Though if this is just a standard powerhouse competing alongside the PS4K, the exclusives have to really shine through this time round.

PS VR already integrates motion tracking, head tracking and VR. Not sure what revolution Nintendo think they are bringing to the table if they try that. Given the dev kits are already there, their HW is fixed, Sony's update of the PS4 is no where near as extensive a change in gears for developers. In theory, devs simply need to create a single game that has the ability to vary resolution and framerate depending on the PS4 model being used. I've seen a lot of weird articles treating the PS4K as if it's a totally separate unit which will require separate games.

The PS4K's CPU and GPU are 100% backward compatible to PS4, so as long as a game engine can switch modes, Devs need do nothing more than they already do.

If Nintendo makes a big thing out of their handheld unit as a controller, I can't see Sony having a problem bringing Vita back out as a DS4K to match. I mean the hardware in a Vita is cheap enough now that they could sell a version of Vita at $79.99 without taking a bath, and as long as it worked as a controller on PS4 (and PS3?) it would be a winner. Just add a couple of bumps for vibration and extend the sides a little for a better hand grip.

Is cool that after all these years of waiting for a Zelda Wii U I will be playing the inferior version of the game -_-

One of the reasons why I'm not so mad, is that I skipped out on the wii and just bought the wii u. I have a nice library because of that and really like it. Hoping nintendo continues the BWC, work on backup data, get rid of region lock, leave network free, and make eshop compatible across all platforms. Don't want to re buy stuff -___-.

Lets not forget they should be announcing the new handheld as well.

If Nintendo can get more third party support this go round...I might take a look at the NX.

NX is going to sell worse than the Wii U.

I wish they'd just go third party. With drastic decrease in console sales per generation it seems less and less people want to buy their console to play a few games a year. I know I don't.

Nintendo used to be my main until the Gamecube, their games "lost their magic" to me. I'd rather just go replay their older titles because lets be honest, their new games just aren't as good.

Worse than the WiiU? My God that would be bad.

I don't think they are dropping the fads and gimmicks, they are talking about some kind of new experience and I have a feeling it's a blurring of some level of VR/AR with their WiiU-like hand held game unit/controller and their Wii motion tracking.

Quite how they intend to make that new in the face of PSVR with PS Move I don't know, since PSVR with PS Move is a full 'VR' experience.

Actually, when you think about it the combination of PS VR, the PS Camera and PS Move controllers taken together are the most complete VR suite on the market since the PS Move controllers allow players to control things in the VR space with physical motions.

It's not the most complete, that's Vive, but the combo of pscam, move and VR makes it comparable with HTC Vive and that is a bloody great compliment since Vive is the top shelf highest priced alternative out there.

I got a good feeling about PS VR. RIght now it seems it actually is the Rift who falls behind on the hype train. That's pretty darn amazing since they *started* that whole movement.

Ah, I wasn't aware that HTC had all the components there too. Thanks.

I think the thing that will set that apart though is that PS Move and the PS Camera are relatively mature products, they have had their bugs worked out and production costs are low. Developers also know how to take advantage of them.

But I will have to look a bit more at the HTC Vive so I am aware of it's functionality.

Yeah it's got special hand controllers for each hand, a more advanced movement tracking and even a camera mounted in the mask for Augmented Reality and other purposes, like show obstacles for you ingame so that you don't accidentially stumble over something, or display other persons in your (physical) surroundings.

It seems to be a really well thought through product.

Yep, think on that people, PSN is bigger than Nintendo. So why do we pay so much attention to what the 3DS maker is doing?

I mean, this is PSN revenue alone, no hardware or physical software sales, no accessories, just PSN. kind of gives some perspective on the size relationship of Sony vs Nintendo these days.

Come on Ben. Just say it. You grew up.

Nintendo games *are* primarily for kids. It's who they are designed for. That's no secret and should be no shame to just say.

That grown ups too can enjoy them goes without saying, just like we can enjoy other entertainment designed for the youngest. But that is who they are designed for.
