Opinion - Ben Dutka

A fond farewell to our long time Editor in Chief, Mr. Ben Dutka.

"Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

- Dylan Thomas

I was trying to find the right words and realized that Dylan Thomas had done it for me already. Ben, you probably didn't realize this at the time, though perhaps you do now, you 'fathered' a community of gamers into being.

You'll be missed, and if/when PSXExtreme fades from view, it too will be sorely missed by it's community of long time, and not so longtime fans. Whether we post comments ourselves, contribute news or just watch from a distance reading the articles and comments, smiling and laughing at some, or railing against others, we all are part of a community that's been around for a decade or more.

Naturally, no Internet good bye can occur without an obligatory cat picture, so here you go everyone.

Goodby Ben

Stay tuned to PSXExtreme for news of a community forum coming soon.

sad cat

Personally, I found PSXExtreme, somehow, at about the time PS3 launched. PSXExtreme quickly became my go-to news site for gaming, and the first place I read each day. Ben and Arnold too were among the best reviewers of games, and their views were always backed up by reasons.  Well written articles, considered Opinion and Editorial pieces, even exclusive news pieces flowed over the years.

Sadly, my own life forced me to step back from a few things, but recently I had been able to return to PSXExtreme. It was like a homecoming in many respects, and for that, I thank you Ben, and especially the PSX Community that you fostered into being.

Thank you too for the opportunity to be a contributor to PSXExtreme.

Speaking for myself, and I suspect many, if not all of the members of our community here at PSX, I would like to thank you for all your effort and talented writing over the years; and bid you a fond farewell as you turn the page on your new chapter in life.

Everyone, let's all...

I'm finding a recurring, common theme about most members of this community.

Most of us found this community around 2007 or so, and we cant REALLY put a finger on how it came into our lives. One day it was just there. And unlike other gaming sites, we kept coming back to this site day after day. Always looking for new content and opinions and conversations and REAL/HONEST reviews.

I think the thing that kept me here was the like-minded mentality of everyone on this site. Most had some sort of interest in RPG's; there wasn't a lot of hostility or hate towards games/devs/or other contributors. Discussions were meaningful, and while they might have been opposite opinions, they were never derogatory or inflammatory.

I appreciate this community. What it started as, and whats its grown into over the years. And I look forward to how it will evolve from here.

You speak my mind!

And that's the thing I love about this site. When it comes to gaming related stuff, many of the active members on this site just so happen to articulate what is already on my mind. This is the reason why I rarely felt the need to comment (and I think many of the other lurkers on this site feel the same way).

I've been here reading this site long before a comments section even existed, so you kinda had to be a lurking around back then. It was much later when I finally decided to sign up and drop a comment of two.

Yet still, many of the members here pretty much wrote out what I wanted to say anyway. So I rarely commented for that reason, but lately I felt the urge to comment a little more than usual.

And what timing...

It turns out the main editor is moving on, and the site and it's community might be on it's last legs.

Even though there is talk of migrating this community into a 'forum' somewhere, I can't help but feel like it's going to be dead anyway...

Anyone ever checked the PSXextreme forums? (Yeah, this site has one if you didn't know), check it out and you'll see what I mean.

For a strong lasting community, I think you need a constant supply of content rolling through, otherwise, what is there really to talk about that can't be better discussed elsewhere?

Ben had stated that we don't really need his articles to come together as a community and discuss things, but let's face it, it was primarily Ben's articles that brought us together in the first place. I think the quality articles on this site, served as a 'conduit' or a kind of 'excuse' for like-minded people to come together and discuss their favourite hobby. Remove that conduit and... you'll probably end up with something like the PSXextreme forum, fun and exciting at first, but eventually it'll run out of steam, and die...

Maybe the community members here can prove me wrong. Whatever the case, I'll be sure to join the ride, wherever it'll go...

If it crashes, it crashes.

A community is only as strong as it's members. A fan following depends on a singular voice to follow.

I'd like to believe that what we have here is a group of like minded gamers who came together through the catalyst of another like minded voice with a platform to speak from - Ben and PSXExtreme.

The explosion of social media and 'social' content/interactivity in all facets of life has eroded traditional communities and for that matter traditional Internet gathering places such as forums and news sites.

But, we all kept coming here for a reason, whatever that reason may be for each of us. I'd like to think that we as a community are strong enough to continue even if one of our voices is quieter now.

"A community is only as strong as it's members. A fan following depends on a singular voice to follow." -TheHighlander

^ That right there my friend is a quote, and I couldn't agree more. However, I do like to think of myself as a 'fan' of Ben's writings, as well as to many of the long time commenter's here (yes, that includes you Highlander, so pat yourself on the back, or wherever else you please...)

But what differentiates a follower from a contributor is that a contributor contributes, whereas a follower... well just follows, and as soon as that central voice disappears, so do they.

So the members that contribute are the ones adding value to a group/community, thereby giving the community its strength, its reputation, a sense of comradery etc.

Will this community live on without a central voice? I suppose that'll be in the hands of all those who decide to contribute.

And thank you for bringing up the issue of traditional communities. As you already know, gaming for me was more than just 'gaming', it's what brought people closer together. But that community like aspect to gaming which I experienced earlier on in my life, slowly eroded away over time, and it'll be very sad to see the same thing occur with the online community we have here.

This idea of 'community' is actually a major theme that I cover in my book (which I'm still currently writing). Today, all kinds of traditional & local communities are dwindling away, in favour of a massive, centralized, 'global community' if you like. Now that doesn't sound so bad, until you realize what's being lost in that transition, and understand what attributes our 'centralized' system entails.

A real strong 'community', I believe is decentralized by its nature (and therefore is self-sufficient or at least interdependent). It may or may not have a centralized voice, but that's not what really drives the community, the people do (or more accurately the people who contribute/add value).

In a centralized system, the people essentially give their power away on to some centralised body, which usually claims to act on their 'behalf' or in their 'best interests'. But essentially this centralised body becomes the actual driving force in people lives, not people themselves. And so a dependency develops, and a cycle envelops...

I could go on, but the main thing to understand is that, one structure isn't 'better' than the other, they just produce different results. It all really depends on what people 'value'.

No matter who you are, or where you are from, we all yearn for a sense of belonging, a sense of identity, and we all want to feel like we matter.

A sense of real community is vital in that regard, and I feel we all seek this out in our own ways.

It's just a shame that we are losing that in this day and age...

I think I found the site prior to/around the launch of the PS3 also. It had all the news of the new machine and kpet me interested. Here I am years later, still intrigued by the latest and greatest.

I dont go to any other websites for gaming news so I'd just like to say personally, thanks Ben for your contributions over the years.

Looking forward to seeing PSXextreme to continue going from strength to strength.

Yeah, it was 2007 era that a bulk of us flocked to this haven. Strange, or maybe it just appears that way. Might make for a good poll question.

This is all very sad, but I think it's really going to hit home for me when the next hotly anticipated title releases and I don't have my gold standard for review source to start from. The scoring from PSX was better than the metacritic score to me. Of course I didn't always agree spot on, but that was far less than the other so called review sources.

Anyways, I'm all for at least a forum or sorts! If someone can simply facilitate the site mechanics we could keep it afloat. We're gamers, how hard can it be?

This is my first post on this site I think. Been a lurker for so many years (sorry/not sorry). I too happened across this site around 07/08 when I bought my cigarette smoke infused 2nd hand PS3. Ah, the good old days of being a teenager.

So many site have come and gone (or completely fallen off the face of the earth) in that time but this is where I've always come home for the most honest of reviews and entertaining commentary. I know I'll be back for many more years to come, even if I don't comment as much, but I'll try to.

To Mr Ben Dutka, I hope you find success and joy in whatever you do next. Thank you for what you've given us over the years. It has been truly appreciated.

Ben,your reviews were the ones that I took more seriously, yes we have our differences (especially on the Assassin Creed saga and From Sofware games) but that was more about personal taste.

Loved how you were so damn old school and never sugar coated when companies tried to sell us crap (like the new direction SE took), you were sometimes grumpy with some users (don't blame you they were kinda trollish) but imo that gave the site a personality that I really liked.

Thanks for all the years my friend.

I still remember the day..In my teens I always went to psxcheats.com. Every cheat fir every game imaginable was there. A few years into the ps2 era I noticed the kept changing to psxextreme. I'd visit here and there until Scary Larry left gamepro. Then gamepro faded..in search for a good gaming site I came here. Been here ever since. Made my first and only user name a year or so in.

The community and well written articles made me want to join the discussion. I even remember when Ben took over. He grew over the years as a reviewer. Became one of the best to me

Please don't go anywhere yet folks, just cuz Ben's news isn't up every day doesn't mean we aren't making plans and keeping control of this site. We have some important things we want to get up, it's just going to take a little time to coordinate and I've gotta test 80 kids in the next couple weeks. I may have found another contributor.

I'm gonna see what I can do in the mean time (I have a controversial review coming soon) plus like I said over the summer if we are still going I'll have plenty of time.

As Highlander said, stay tuned, check in...

It has been a while since I posted anything but I have been religiously checking the site and reading the comments. I can't remember the exact date but I remember playing the ps2 and finding this site. Unfortunately, I was still using dial up internet at that time. I didn't really get involved in the site until I upgraded to dsl. The rest is history.

Last year I was able to send Ben an older version of MS Office as his was somehow deleted. He gave me a free game (Far Cry 4) that I played countless hours on. Actually, it was a little over 120 hours but countless sounded better. I hope World and the others are able to keep this site going. It is my go to for gaming news and coherent reviews that aren't riddled with fanboy comments. Thanks for the memories Ben.

I never really commented much on this site, however I have been checking it for years. It was always the first site I would open. Like it would be PSX, IGN, and PSU. In that order everyday. Ben thank you for your amazing reviews and just your great articles in general. You stuck with us for so long and you did indeed father a community of gamers and fans. I don't know about you guys, but ever since I joined, it's been like an exclusive club so I always felt like I was a part of something, even though I didn't comment often.

But still, I hope this site continues to run long into the foreseeable future. If it does go down, just know that the PSX community was like a family and I'm gonna miss you Ben and the rest of you guys that helped make this site what it is today. I can honestly say that I have never been happier to be a part of a community such as this one. We are all truly unique and truly gamers and all of you guys are awesome!

I will continue to check this site like I do everyday and even though you will be gone Ben, just know you did an amazing job and you will be deeply missed. Good luck on your future endeavors and God's Speed!

It's been said a lot already, but it's amazing how many people felt a deep connection with this community without commenting often, or rarely at all.

There would be months at a time where I wouldn't leave a single comment at all, but I would read every article and all the comments everyday. As some have said, the most common reason for not commenting was because someone had already articulated what I wanted to say better than I could, and I felt I had nothing constructive to add to the conversation.

This is the only website I do that at. I don't think I've ever gone down and read every comment of an article that I have no intention of commenting on, on any website but this one. I believe that in of it's self is a testimont of how unique this community is, and what it means to so many people.

This website has a special sauce and feel of community that no other site even comes close to, especially in this day and age.

Ben, thank you again for holding down the best site in gaming for damn near a decade, and best of luck to those attempting to take the torch and keep it going. It means a lot to so many people.

I've done some networking and sent many of you a friend request on PSN. ID: EuRoRaT

A sad day, indeed. I found this site around 2007/8, if I remember correctly, when I was ravenously searching for all of the latest nuggets of information about Grand Theft Auto IV, and it stuck with me because of its sense of family. It took me a while before I started commenting here, but I was happy to find a community of people that I could feel a part of. And that was because of Ben, and the way that he both fostered conversation and made a point of weeding out those members who were toxic. I know that he grated against a lot of people, but I think, in looking back, it was all for the better.

It's been quite some time since I was an active member here on PSXE. Life has just gotten too much in the way, but I remember days past with great fondness.
I'll keep checking in, and I'm very glad to know that folks like World and Highlander are dedicated to keeping PSXE going.

Ben was the beating heart of this site imo and without his contributions I fear this could be the beginning of the end for this great long-lived site. It just simply isn't going to be the same anymore. PSXExtreme without Ben is like Uncharted without Drake.

I have a weakness to the nostalgia this site brings from all those years back. The review of The Bouncer is what got me here to begin with too, good to see it's still there. ;)

Thankyou Ben.

WorldEndsWithMe & Highlander should be the new overseers imo if this site is to stay afloat.
