DOOM Trophies And An Easter Egg

ID Software's reboot of DOOM is coming, and there is a lot of information available to us about this modern reworking of a shooter classic that even I have played.

First up, the trophy list for the new Doom has been revealed. The trophy names include many references to the game's PC ancestor, such as the IPXSETUP.EXE trophy for winning a multi-player deathmatch.

Perhaps I am showing my age, but I remember playing the shareware release of DOOM on PC over an IPX network for deathmatches. Doom is the grand daddy of them all when it comes to online shooters. Here is the list of trophies, enjoy;

  • Specialist - Earn the Mastery for a weapon mod
  • IDKFA - Earn the Masteries for all weapon mods
  • Hot Swapper - Acquire all weapon mods
  • Historian - Find all Data Logs

  • IDDQD- Upgrade all Runes
  • What Else Ya Got?- Complete all Mission Challenges

  • An Old Friend- Acquire the BFG
  • Shareware- Create and publish a SnapMap
  • No Rest for the Living- Play 5 published SnapMaps
  • Entryway- Complete the SnapMap Basic and Advanced Tutorials

But, that's not all. the Doom reboot comes complete with at least one 'Easter Egg'. The game includes the original Doom levels hidden inside the game. check out the video, the reveal happens at about 1:30. Of course this is Doom, so if at work, use headphones.

Last, but not least, have you ever wondered why the game is called Doom? Here's how John Carmack explains it;

There is a scene in 'The Color of Money' where Tom Cruise shows up at a pool hall with a custom pool cue in a case. 'What do you have in there?' asks someone. 'Doom.' replied Cruise with a cocky grin. That, and the resulting carnage, was how I viewed us springing the game on the industry.

Doom's reboot is available from May 13. Well, I've just got to say it....we're alll DOOMED!!

Interesting. Never heard the story of why it's called Doom before.

It was already a few years old at the time, but in the late 90's, my friends and I would set up deathmatches in our schools computer lab at lunch sometimes. It was really my first taste of multiplayer shooters and got me into CounterStrike and Battlefield, which in turn got me permanently hooked to online shooters.

The original Doom level shown in the video is actually my favorite level in Doom, in any and all versions. You're sneaking around what appears to be a computer center in the bowels of this place, and it's dark.

Imagine playing with your two best buddies and since there was only one PC we had at the time, we're taking turns. It's late evening, we haven't turned the lights on, the TV is off, all there is is the game, the screen and it's sound.

Now I also have to say that the gamma adjustment in the video seems to be set quite High, because I remember that particular area being quite dark, with death awaiting you around every corner.

Anyway, on with the story. So, this was the first time we played this level, and being the kind hearted young adults we were, we had to have some fun. So my friend, let's call him Jim (not the real name) is playing, and he's carefully sneaking around, and jumps every now and again when something moves and he kills it.

Me and my other friend 'john' decide at that moment, when Jim is sneaking most carefully forward that this is the perfect time to jab Jim in the ribs. As luck would have it, the moment we chose also happened to be the moment that the game chose to have something leap out at him.

Well, bowel control was maintained, just, but the language we heard would have made 3 sailors faint. I can't vouch for bladder control being 100% during the 15 minutes of laughing our asses off that followed.

No other game has ever managed to do that. Doom was so ahead of it's time, so playable and fun. ah...memories.

I'm getting this. Even though the Multiplayer made me sick. The game itself looks pretty good, and faithful to itself.

DOOM was the first game I ever played a dial up deathmatch on. First thing to play so much it brough on what my friend and I called "Doom nightmares."

I hope this game is worth it, but even if it's just a fun zip back in time then that might be enough.

I like that little secret level but I'd also like the original game in there. That stuff in Doom 3 (Doom 1 and 2) are not the same games, they f*cked up the whole musical score.

I did enjoy how they handled the Wolfenstein levels in the new games as nightmares but there should have been more.

This game looks pretty solid. Can't wait for the reviews to come in. Based off of the gameplay videos it seems to have a Twisted Metal element to it. By that I mean, no duck and cover. Keep moving or you're dead, but don't let up on the offensive or you won't last. A hard to nail dynamic that many games seldom hit. I wonder if it reviewers will give it trouble for being too different or too unoriginal. It's usually one or the other.

Yeah that's how shooters of old always had to work, none of that cover business, or if they have a cover system it isn't required and you can take some punishment before you die. That's how I love to shoot. Like an action hero from the 80's.

I expect reviewers to give it a point less and call it generic for not being more Cod-like. But then... I might be doing the review here NOW so we shall see what happens with objectivity in the mix.
