Ubisoft: The Next Generation Of Consoles Won't Be The Last
There had been talk about the next generation of consoles being the last.
Some industry experts and analysts have predicted that after the upcoming generation, we'll shift to one universal machine. However, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot isn't buying that.
In speaking to CVG, Guillemot says the multiple console structure will continue beyond the PS4/Xbox One/Wii U generation, mostly because "the manufacturers want a way to control their platform." Not everyone wants this, though, as noted game designer David Jaffe said last year that he believes the next generation of hardware will be the last in regards to multiple systems. Many think that competition begets quality so having two or three competing game consoles on the market at once is a plus.
But there are pros and cons to the universal console theory, too. Guillemot also said in the interview that the current generation has lasted too long. That being said, the good news is that because of this, the industry has the potential to grow very quickly. Well, let's hope; this has been nothing but a down year number-wise thus far.
