Will The Playstation Faithful Miss Insomiac?
Things change and developers have to do what they think is best for their bottom line.
That said, I have to admit I was a bit surprised to see Insomniac doing an exclusive project for Microsoft's Xbox One at E3. After I saw the trailer for their new parkour shooter Sunset Overdrive I thought, “Well, good for them. They have another vision and someone is willing to foot the bill for it to become a reality.”
It isn't as if Insomniac was exceptionally tight as an exclusive developer for Sony platforms (they were vocal about staying independent) but franchises like Ratchet & Clank and Resistance did make them near and dear to many Playstation fans' hearts for many years.
Their most recent exclusive title was the well-reviewed Resistance 3, which I happen to think was the best in the series. The entire Resistance series never quite got the respect it deserved but the low sales for Resistance 3 were probably highly distressing for Insomniac even if they never let on about it.
Maybe that's why a lot of fans didn't fault them when they decided to take their next project, Fuse, multiplatform. After all, a developer needs sales to survive.
If Sunset Overdrive goes over as poorly as Fuse things could always change again. They could come back for another R&C adventure, or another Resistance if they feel it is worth the risk. However, the ugly truth is once somebody jumps ship they almost never come back. Will you miss Insomniac's exclusive influence on Playstation in the next generation?
