Will The Playstation Faithful Miss Insomiac?

Things change and developers have to do what they think is best for their bottom line.

That said, I have to admit I was a bit surprised to see Insomniac doing an exclusive project for Microsoft's Xbox One at E3. After I saw the trailer for their new parkour shooter Sunset Overdrive I thought, “Well, good for them. They have another vision and someone is willing to foot the bill for it to become a reality.”

It isn't as if Insomniac was exceptionally tight as an exclusive developer for Sony platforms (they were vocal about staying independent) but franchises like Ratchet & Clank and Resistance did make them near and dear to many Playstation fans' hearts for many years.

Their most recent exclusive title was the well-reviewed Resistance 3, which I happen to think was the best in the series. The entire Resistance series never quite got the respect it deserved but the low sales for Resistance 3 were probably highly distressing for Insomniac even if they never let on about it.

Maybe that's why a lot of fans didn't fault them when they decided to take their next project, Fuse, multiplatform. After all, a developer needs sales to survive.

If Sunset Overdrive goes over as poorly as Fuse things could always change again. They could come back for another R&C adventure, or another Resistance if they feel it is worth the risk. However, the ugly truth is once somebody jumps ship they almost never come back. Will you miss Insomniac's exclusive influence on Playstation in the next generation?

Yeah i'll miss them. but like they said they needed to "grow up" or something so they're making an.. exclusive... for the xbox.

Fine I still don't get it.

arent they working on another Ratchet and Clank, that was the weird ad we were seeing a little while ago that said, when worlds collide

i figure thats what they meant by worlds collide, that they were bringing R+C to multiplat.

Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus, that is all. With that said, they have been lacking as of late. The last two Ratchets were ok at best and Fuse, meh. At one point they were equal to Naughty Dog but they seem to lost some of that mojo. I'm not saying they can't get it back though.

Honestly I won't. I'm not into FPS and I never got into Ratchet & Clank either. For that matter their new game sunset overdrive looks like something I would have avoided anyway so not missing anything there either.

I'm not saying they are untalented or anything, they just tend to release games that aren't up my alley.

I am the playstation faithful and I enjoyed Resistance. The first Resistance in my opinion was the best. The graphics was great, story was good, and multiplayer was fun. Then the second one had weaker graphics and the multiplayer was fun but started to mimic CoD. The third one was the worst. It was just painful to see the series in which I devoted countless hours playing turn into a wannabe CoD clone. Lacked story and the multiplayer completely turned. I beat the story mode and traded it in. I will miss who Insomniac used to be, not who they are now..

I have mixed feelings about Insomniac's departure. My kids loved R&C and I'd have to say that the first Resistance is probably one of the best games ever made. Unfortunately, all the other Resistance sequels never managed to capture the magic of the first one. Hell, I would have kept buying sequels if they had just kept the same engine and just expanded the story line. The original Resistance, to me, was the potential of the PS3 - full story, split screen campaign. I really thought, back then that all games would have this feature. Boy, was I in for a disappointment.

Anyway, I wish them well and I'll dust off my copy of Resistance: Fall of Man and play it through to the end for the umpteenth time.

I rarely fail to finish games, and I do remember getting out of the car and going to a...spaceship-sorta thing? Actually I don't remember lol. And come to think of it...I don't remember why I stopped playing either. I wasn't bored or anything, and the story was well told. Maybe it was the shoot through wall guys...god they got annoying. And now, 7 years later, it's hard game to get into without the constant thought "Look at those damn FIRE EFFECTS! Eurgh!", lol.

I did enjoy the multiplayer though.

Insomniac has multiple sects within their studio. Multiple projects of their's work in tandem with each other. I suspect we'll see plenty more Ratchet coming from them in the future. I don't think the question is have they left, it's what other project's have they chosen to take on. As it stands it appears they have their hand in 3 concurrent franchises. Two of which are exclusive to Sony and MS and one of which is a multi-plat.

You didn't have to be living in a "playstation vacuum" to enjoy the first resistance, it was a damn good game. You've pretty much got that back to front, it was one of the first games to take heat because it was a PS3 exclusive. Lots of people were going out of their way to call it "average" when it was anything but.

I played it. It was good. I think it was too stretched thin in meeting it's longer duration, and could've been either fleshed out more or compressed to have more of the unique bits. As it stands, it was nice but nothing extraordinary to what I had already experienced from the genre by that point. And really, an 86 from metacritic sounds just about right to me for it's time.

Miss them? No.

Quite frankly, Resistance 1 was good fun at its time, but it was very quickly passed by other FPS games. Resistance 2 wasn't as great as the first, although the multiplayer co-op was fun, and Resistance 3 didn't inspire much hope, so I gave it a miss.

They were awesome back at the start of the generation, but other developers overtook them, and they never really caught up.

No. I adored the Spyro series and have been wishing they would create a new one or new platforming IP which is open world. But no. Fuse is a prime example what is wrong with the industry. I have had enough of these shallow gun crazy games. That doesn't mean I demand a gritty realistic game either I just wish the gaming industry would be willing to create more AAA title which don't focus on shooting bad guys.

I did also enjoy Resistance 1, it was a very good shooter which brought a lot of imagination with the Chimera species. I liked 2 as well but 3 was such an awful waste of time in my opinion and really let the series down.

There's no reason to hate a developer for leaving the 'exclusives' world...while they may have the finacial support of a company, the potential rewards (financial and personal) can be far greater on your own. And R&C and Resistance are still Sony IPs, so won't be showing up elsewhere (unless Sony sells/releases the rights) and Insomniac could still be contracted by Sony to make more of those, if desired.

I think I probably WOULD'VE missed them.

Resistance is one of my favorite franchises of the generation (anybody saying that R2 and R3 were bad needs to get their freakin' head examined), and Ratchet & Clank was traditionally great.

But then they abandoned Resistance, started getting all experimental with R&C (multiplayer-oriented in All 4 One, some odd strategy concept in Full Frontal Assault, etc.), and then unveiled Sunset Overdrive, which I couldn't possibly care less about.

So unless they come out with an R&C that's actually RATCHET & CLANK, or they announce a new Resistance, I really won't miss them much at all.

Ben, have you not seen "Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus" yet? It's a single-player Ratchet & Clank title designed by the director of "Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time". No multiplayer (not even co-op).

It's only $30 and the trailer looks great! You should look into it.

Insomniac hasn't abandoned Sony. They're just spreading their wings. Yeah, it sucks their new IP is exclusive to Xbox One. I feel sorry for Sony when Yoshida said, "We grew up together." It's true. Spyro, Ratchet, Resistance, etc.

But as they grow their company, they'll be able to make more money and more great titles for both systems!

I could be wrong of course but my prediction is that R&C will go to a smaller 1st party dev at Sony after Nexus and after Insomniac collects their check for Sunset Overdrive they will be exclusively multiplatform.

Once MS pays somebody off to do something just for them, they want that same payoff for any other exclusive projects and Sony never pays for 3rd party exclusives.

Just like Kojima can stick it for abandoning the PlayStation fanbase, so can Insomniac. Yes, Resistance 3 deserved better sales however, Ratchet & Clank, despite the maasive drop in quality after A Crack in Time, has continued to still make them money. To give future PS4 owners the middle finger? Good riddance Insomniac, hopefully for your sake, Sunset Overdrive isn't as absolutely trashy as your recent efforts.

Resistance 1 was a good game, Resistance 2 suck didn't like it much and I haven't play Resistance 3 yet but I will soon because I'm a fan of the series.

Ratchet and Clank: future destruction r something like that was my first R&C game and loved it, it was just fun to play. But R&C: A crack in Time blew it out of water I loved it even more. R&C: All 4 One was fun too played it with my family and friends and we all had a blast. Didn't play any more after that except for the demo of R&C: full frontal assault, probably get it sometime soon.

I'm not too worried about these exclusives if Insomniac abandon them, Sony can have a different A class developer to continue the series.
