Minecraft-like Dragon Quest Builders Is Launching In October
Publisher Square Enix announced that its Minecraft-inspired sandbox construction game Dragon Quest Builders is headed to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in North America and Europe later this year. The news comes on the same day that the long-running fantasy RPG series marks its 30th anniversary; the original Dragon Quest launched on the Famicom this day in 1986.
The story of Dragon Quest Builders actually follows a “what if” story following the original Dragon Quest. In this story the realm has been destroyed because the hero (from DQ1) who was supposed to save the world by defeating the evil Dragonlord, actually got tempted into accepting a sham deal with him. This plunges the land into darkness and despair and the few survivors scattered around the world no longer understand the concept of creativity and live through scavenging what remains among ruins.
This is where Dragon Quest Builders begins. The protagonist (that’s you) who can be either a boy or girl, is awoken by a Guardian Spirit as the Legendary Builder who is the only person in the world with the knowledge to create objects through combination and imagination. It’s now up to you to rebuild the world and restore it to its former glory.
As for the gameplay of the game, everything plays out in real time and the world is made entirely of blocks (although it may not look that blocky) and you can use these blocks to build pretty much whatever you want.
Though its main questline focuses on construction, Dragon Quest Builders also offers real-time combat and character-leveling mechanics, essentially transforming the Minecraft formula into an action-RPG. In order to gather necessary building materials, players must explore a vast wilderness in search of monsters and hidden treasure, adding an element of danger to an otherwise laid-back premise. While the gameplay will be different, you can expect to see lots of Dragon Quest mainstays, from characters to items to monsters. And yes, there will be plenty of cute blue slimes.
The PlayStation 4 version of Dragon Quest Builders will launch digitally and at retail in North America and Europe in October. The PlayStation Vita edition will skip a boxed release for its upcoming PlayStation Network-exclusive debut. Square Enix is also readying a pair of Dragon Quest series remakes for North American release “later this year,” including upgraded Nintendo 3DS versions of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII and 2004’s Dragon Quest VIII.
It will be interesting to see if Dragon Quest Builders can live up to the hype compare with Minecraft, or with the previous Dragon Quest games. If I have a spare time on October, I'll definitely try this game, as I'm planning to play Final Fantasy XV and Yomawari: Night Alone on that month. How about you guys? Will you be getting Dragon Quest Builders on October?
