The Last Guardian Will Come To PS4 This Year, Promises Fumito Ueda

There are a great many highly anticipated games coming out this year, but for Sony fans, none more so than The Last Guardian. The game has been promised since 2007 and even now, more than a decade later, we’re yet to see any signs of life, until now.

Fumito Ueda, the designer and mind behind The Last Guardian told EDGE that the game will definitely hit the Sony PlayStation 4 by the end of this year. Ueda’s earlier works, Shadow of the Colossus and Ico, are considered by many to be milestones in gaming and the hype behind The Last Guardian is understandable. It’s hard to really put your finger on exactly what it is that makes Ueda’s games special. But largely, it’s down to the atmosphere.

"Since this is the year we will see the game's release, I do have some worries," director Fumito Ueda wrote. "But I'm also very excited."

The Last Guardian stars a small boy and his enormous, bird-and-cat-like companion Trico. At the start of the game, Trico’s bothersome and wary to obey commands. But as the game progresses and trust is built, a more solid relationship is formed between the unlikely pair. “This creature isn’t like the cute pets that exist in other games, or an ally that’s really useful,” said Ueda, in an interview with Edge. “The role of the creature is ambiguous; that’s something we wanted to express in the game, and it doesn’t always do what you ask it to do. That’s one of the themes of The Last Guardian. It’s something that’s difficult, and completely different. I want to create the next thing—an experience that people have never had before.”

The Last Guardian began development back in 2007, a year after the PS3 launched, but became stuck in development hell. Sony re-announced the game for PS4 at last year's E3.

You can watch footage and behind the scenes clips in the video below, along with commentary from Ueda. At one point he mentions how making Trico feel like a living creature was only something he finally felt satisfied with in the last couple of months.

It's a good thing that Ueda confirmed that The Last Guardian will be launching later this year, as fans are getting weary of waiting for the release of the game. Most likely the final release date of the game will be revealed on next month's E3, and I have a hunch that the game will launch during the holiday season. If it does, then the PS4 is in good position to dominate during the holiday season, as PS4 exclusives Gran Turismo Sport and The Last Guardian will surely dominate the competition. Better start on saving some money now for the holidays.

Someone make sure he knows what year it is.

This gen started really slow, but this year could really be memorable if this game and VR deliver along the already solid releases.
