PS4 And Uncharted 4 Tops US Hardware And Software Sales Charts In May 2016 NPD
With E3 days away and announcements ready to potentially shake up the console business, Sony's PS4 has again come away as the top-selling console in the United States during May 2016, according to the NPD Group's May report.
Sony confirmed with GameSpot that its console came out on top in May. For the second month in a row, it didn't offer any statement on the report beyond that. Microsoft did comment on the report, though its focus was on anything other than Xbox One hardware sales, as is now the norm.
New hardware sales in the US overall declined 10 percent during the month, from $153.1 million last May to $137.7 million this year. NPD analyst Liam Callahan attributes this largely to a drop in portable sales.
"The majority of the decline in sales stemmed from portables, down $7.3 million and 7th generation hardware, down $5 million," he notes. "Eighth generation hardware unit sales were stable, but dollar sales decreased by 2 percent or $3 million due to a decrease in average price for these consoles.” Callahan also points out that Xbox One and PS4 combined to have "43 percent higher cumulative unit sales than their predecessors at the same point in their lifecycles."
As for software, the clear winner for the month of May is Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Nathan Drake’s final big adventure ruled the charts during the month; that’s especially striking given that the game only released on a single platform. The demon-killing fun of Doom was nipping at Naughty Dog’s heels. Overwatch rounds out the top three, but it’s worth noting that Blizzard’s wildly popular new shooter didn’t launch until late in the monthly cycle, so there’s good reason to believe we might see it show up again in the June numbers. Callahan notes that: “When comparing Overwatch sales for days in the market, this title doubled the sales of Doom.”
The NPD also noted that the video gaming hobby has a lot to cheer about right now as far as new console sales; the PS4 and Xbox One have 43 percent higher cumulative sales right now when compared against this same point in the previous generation of hardware sales.
Here's the rundown of the top ten software for the month of May.
1. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (PS4)
2. Doom 2016 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
3. Overwatch (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
4. Battleborn (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
5. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
6. Minecraft (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
7. NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
8. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Xbox One, PS4, PS3, 360, PC)
9. MLB 16: The Show (PS4, PS3)
10. Dark Souls III (PS4, Xbox One)
As expected, Uncharted 4 was a huge success for Sony and the PlayStation 4. It led May, which is always impressive for a single-platform release going up against games like Doom that are on both PS4 and Xbox One. The action-adventure game was one of the most anticipated releases of the year, and that translated into huge sales for both the game itself and the hardware.
“Uncharted 4 also marked the best first month of sales for any game in the Uncharted series after Uncharted 3, which is remarkable given the fact that it launched during the holiday period in November 2011,” said Callahan. “The success of Uncharted helped Sony rank as the leading software publisher for May 2016.”
Well, it was another good month for Sony again as the PS4 had another strong sales and Uncharted 4 was surely a big reason for the strong sales of PS4 last May. Even though No Man's Sky was delayed from June to August, I still expect the PS4 to be the top console again for the month of June. Star Ocean 5 will surely be a factor for making the PS4 the top console again for this month. Congrats again to Sony and Naughty Dog!
