Will The PS4 Beat The Xbox One To Store Shelves This Holiday?

Okay, so we know the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be launching this holiday season. But we don't have exact dates just yet.

So, it's feasible that while one could launch at the end of October, the other might not be available until early December. Do you think Sony will beat Microsoft to stores and if not, do you think it will matter?

If they launch within a week of each other, maybe that won't matter much. However, if there's a significant gap, and the later system only enjoys a few weeks of holiday retail, that could be a big deal. The other issue that might come into play is the matter of cost and accessibility; few will be able to drop a gigantic chunk of change on both systems. But more will be able to handle it if the consoles are at least a month apart. Hence, you may see more multi-console purchases if that gap exists, and that's not a bad thing.

But if they do come out very close to one another, the war is on, right? I mean, the majority will have to pick their horse and go with it. However, I suppose the other could be added to the Christmas wishlist for a great many people...even though it's an awfully expensive present. I wonder if it'll be better or worse for Sony to launch first...or if it matters at all, provided they're both available. What do you say?

Can't see how it could be worst for Sony to launch first, especially if they hold the cheaper price as well. If Sony can launch first, that would pretty much wrap up everything that went wrong with the launch of the PS3 (Price, timing, accessibility for devs).

I think it has to be first. Think of the Xbone user base. They are mostly kids that will have mom buy it for them. So if the PS4 is there, they'll beg them to get it so they can have something. If not, I can just hear the moms say, "well, this is the one I bought so deal with it." Or, "this one was available so I bought it." If that's the case, the out-of-the-know mom's are going to buy the wrong system (xbone).

What kid would say, "nah, I'll hold onto this xbone for x amount of days/weeks and trade it in for a PS4."

Stay Classy PSX...

I'd like to see the PS4 launch first and just explode its awesomeness into the market, eclipsing the lameness of Xbox One when it lands with a pop n fizzle.

Maybe the Xbox One will also sizzle when the first generation units invariably overheat.

That would be funny, if not a little bit tragic, if that happened to Microsoft again. ;)

@JROD0823

That would be beyond tragic. Borderline masochistic even. On MS part and anyone who repurchases if their One Red Rings. Semi pun intended.

It would show that MS truly does not care and will shove any piece of burning plastic down consumers throats. And some will love it.

@FatherSun

That's the mystery of battered person syndrome.

No matter how much abuse Microsoft dishes out to its customers, there will always be those that came crawling back every time begging for more, and thinking that Microsoft has never done wrong by them the entire time.

I don't know if it's a must, but I think getting the PS4 on shelves before Xbox One would be a very positive first step into the next-gen for Sony.

agreed. this way Sony can stomp out any sort of Xbox momentum gains before they even begin.

It sure does! Along with:
Just Deal With It!
If you want a console for offline play we also have the X360!
ESRam
Over heating issues, need to lower CPU clock
Manditory Kinect
NSABox
GPU Cores - XBone 768 and PS4 1152
Peak Shader Throughput - XBone 1.23 TFLOPS and PS4 1.84 TFLOPS
System Memory - XBone 8GB 2133MHz DDR3 and PS4 8GB 5500MHz GDDR5
System Memory Bandwidth - XBone 68.3 and PS4 GB/s 176.0 GB/s
XBone is great for Business Meetings and Corporations that do teleconferencing!!!

There is probably more that I have forgotten. Even though Microsoft did a 180 on the always online and used games fee gamers remember.

The only reason someone would be a XBone at this point is:
Exclusives
Brand Loyalty
Racism

Yell at me all you want about Racism but it is sadly true. It's a factor in a lot of consumer product purchasing decisions.

Racism or "nationalism". However you wish to phrase it, I have heard people saying that they will not under any circumstances buy Sony because it's not American. I've pointed out that Sony does have a SCEA division and that Xbox's are not manufactured in the USA, and that the Toyota one individual drives is Japanese, but all of these explanations are "just excuses not to buy the American console" on my part.

Whatever floats a boat down river, I suppose.

I don't know about sales overall, but I've made up my mind for the PS4 already. XBOne just doesn't have anything I care about.

The price point alone, plus the DRM sideshow, should situation the PS4 in the clear lead.

If I were working for Sony i'd like to think so. Most of the edge PS4 had over the 180 was lost after the... 180. Launching sooner can only be better for sales but it will only make a slight impact at best and only if it's a gap of at least 2 or 3 weeks. I got my fingers crossed for a launch in late October.

Launching before the Xbox One and also maintaining great games along the way will have Playstation on top again. PS3 had a very slow start there really wasnt much to play in the first two years. PS4 in my opinion already doing better than PS3 before launch. Ill be buying one soon as MGSV or FFXV releases. How I wish R would make GTA V for PS4.

I believe Sony should release it Nov. 5. why? because that's when Call of Duty releases. They'll definitely pick up a great number of purchases if they release that day!

I would love to see the PS4 beat out the launch of the Xbox One by at least a week, but I'll be satisfied if they at least launch the same day.

I hope Sony releases the PS4 before or at the same time as the XBone. They have such a positive vibe going right now and I foresee it getting even more impressive as we get closer to launch. However, as a competition and due to generation fatigue, being late to the party would be a bad idea. There are a lot of gamers that will go with the new kid on the block before brand loyalty. Also, times are tough, the gamers that buy both consoles will be in the minority. Hopefully Sony launches first which would truly be an advantage.

Launch first and launch hard.

It was my first thought that Sony would be ever so calculated with the PS4. I wished they would launch with a more powerful system, a lower price and earlier release. So far so good with the first two and if corporate rumblings about Sony being further along with development, silicon and manufacturing then I believe that they are waiting for the last moment. The moment when MS reveals The XB1 release date. If they can hold a surprise press conference to state that the PS4 will be on shelves in a week. Hopefully at least 2 weeks prior to the competition I would be so proud!

They coming into the next generation with swords.
