Nomura: There Would Be No KHIII Without All The Spin-offs

Fans of this series have been hoping and praying for a true third installment.

Over the years, all we got were spin-offs for handhelds, which was really starting to test the nerves of the Kingdom Hearts faithful. However, things move kinda slowly at Square Enix and franchise director and creator Tetsuya Nomura said those spin-offs were necessary. It kept the brand alive.

In a recent RPG Site interview, Nomura said they "couldn't start preparing for Kingdom Hearts III for a while." Why? Well, because of "some reasons." That's a vague explanation but hey, it's Square Enix. At least KHIII is coming now and as Nomura sums up:

"Obviously, I didn't want to do that - that's why we decided to make a spin-off game until the preparation for Kingdom Hearts III was ready to do. So, in a way, because of this, if there were no spin-off games, there was no Kingdom Hearts III."

I'd love to know why specifically they couldn't do the third installment. Sounds to me like they just wanted to take advantage of the rising portable's okay to admit it, ya know. We can forgive and forget (sorta) now that KHIII is real and in development.

They knew it would be a very spendy endeavor and their recent decisions for Final Fantasy have resulted in catastrophic financial losses for the Publisher/Developer.

That means they needed to do some extra milking of the cow before the board of directors would agree to another big budget console sequel. The irony of it all is that they lack enough self-awareness to figure this out and so the cycle continues.

You can all expect "Kingdom Hearts III-2: Lightning is Back" now.

Okay, Square, so you had to do the spinoffs. But did you have to spread them across so many different platforms? Could you not have made sure the spinoffs would be playable by... oh, I don't know, the people who played your other games?

No doubt.

@Comic Shaman
So what you're saying is that you want less people to play the series and keep the fanbase small? I thought we were past this already.

The Doom, your comment might make a bit more sense if the series had gone multiplatform. That's not the problem, the problem is each game is exclusive to a different console.

How does my comment not make sense? It is what it is. Keeping a series on one platform reduces it's availability. Developers took note of this, so we're seeing a lot of multiplats/ports as a result.

3rd party exclusivity doesn't matter. It never did, otherwise MGSV, DMC4, FFXIII, SO4, and others would be PS3 exclusives; likewise KH3 and FFXV would be PS4 exclusives. If this gen had taught us anything, is that it doesn't matter if a series has been with one platform for an entire previous generation. The only games that are likely to stay exclusive are 1-party.

Doom, Draguss makes a good point.

You are right.... IF each title were multiplatform. But they aren't. Each console has their own exclusive, most of which aren't solely good enough to make you love the series, except for the main numbered titles.

But with each one being exclusive, I think they reach even fewer people that what would otherwise be possible.

It seems like he just says stuff like this to justify delaying and poking @ss. I don't buy this since some of the stories don't even connect or our just out there

Sounds like BS to me. I mean it is what it is but dont come up with excuses. The brand was alive regardless of the spin offs. Fans have been anxious for the 3rd installment aince they finished 2.

Nomura, the series wouldn't need so many installments if you didn't make the story so ridiculously convoluted.

Still excited for Kingdom Hearts III but who is he kidding?

That sure is some idiotic logic. No one believes the BS. If anything they've diluted the brand.

I played both the first and the second, but since it's been so long since the second installment and all the spin-offs were for platforms I didn't own, I've lost track of the franchise and don't really remember much of the story and trying to go through all the other games sounds like too much effort and would distract me from all the other games I'd like to play (with the little time I have).

So instead of this being a "I have to get it" purchase, now it's become more of a "maybe I'll get it eventually" purchase.

I didn't have a problem with the "spin-offs"...I just wish they weren't spread out on so many platforms.

I managed to play all except one (Re: Coded, which was a complete waste of time from what I've heard), but Birth by Sleep is probably my favourite game in the franchise, despite being a spin-off.

But, really, its his own fault for making KH so convuluted...I love the series, but trying to explain the story to a newcomer is tiring at best.

all these spin-offs on so many different type of platform. can you release a BLU-RAY with KH1,2 and all spin-off combine so I can catch up til when 3 Is release? Ill only take me 8 years to finish them all, which is about right for KH3 to be release. since SE take forever
