Strider's Triumphant Return Set For 2014

Dude, Strider is back!

During the San Diego Comic-Con event, Capcom announced a brand new "2.5D" side-scrolling title called simply, Strider. It'll be released next year for the PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The coolest part? Oh, just wait for it: The game was described as a non-linear adventure that utilizes a structure similar to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Okay, sold. The game will boast "high-speed Cypher combat" in addition to unique Cypher abilities that players can unlock throughout the game. Developer Double Helix is at the helm; they're also bringing us Killer Instinct, an Xbox One exclusive.

Here's seven minutes of gameplay from the new Strider and it looks awesome! If you're too young, this game was all over the place in the early 90s; there were installments on the Mega Drive/Genesis, the Sega Master System, and again on the original PlayStation.

Never played Strider, mainly because I never owned a Sega console, and secondly because I never heard of it when it came to the PlayStation.

I would like to see more of this game though, it looks really freaking cool.

Oh f*ck yes motherf*ckers! This game never left my psyche. I spent many a sleepover with friends zooming through those levels. I can still conjure up all the sound effects in my head.

That said, Double Helix, Y U NO put Invert Y Axis in Silent Hill: Homecoming!?

SWEET! SOTN-style should overcome Strider's only real issue in modern times: Length.

Did a slight balk at Double Helix though. But the gameplay trailer looks good. Cautiously optimistic on this one.

Shaping up to be a D1P!

Strider was also on NES. It wasn't based on the arcade version like the Genesis version was. In fact, I remember it being similar to a Metroid, maybe Megaman, in design as well. It was hard as heck too.

What SotN? Yes, Castlevania effectively borrowed the Metroid format of design and merged it with Vampires and the associated lore for SotN. It worked great, especially considering many PSX gamers were SNES graduates. It seems most favor the Metroidvania design over it's traditional linear action game design.

oh, and strangely enough the ONLY physical disc based PSX game I own is Strider. Woo hoo! I should dust it off and play it as commemoration.

I remember Stryder being Metroidvania with 2 drops of Sonic the Hedgehog in it, and Megaman level difficulty

OMG! Now that's a blast from the past! Strider was a tough game, not as tough as Ninja Gaiden, but difficult. I am so glad to see this. It looks great and reminds me of Shadow Complex.

I really wish Sega would remake E-Swat from the Genesis, that was another great one. Also, would kill for remakes of Forgotten Worlds and U.N. Squadron! The #1 game I would like to see updated in HD is Target Earth from the Genesis. A true classic! Great times!

Won't lie, I haven't even heard of Strider and I certainly had a Megadrive/Gensis. But I can't be the only one who is already getting sick of this 2.5D trend. I was head over heels with the idea of Castle of Illusion being remade & I will still be getting that day one. But then we had the announcement of Flashback, Ducktales and some other one and now this. I don't want this to become a tedious phase in gaming that is all.
