Analyst Expects "Initial Shortages" For Both PS4 And Xbox One

Despite reports that Sony would flood the market with plenty of PlayStation 4 consoles this holiday season, one analyst believes consumers will still face frustrating shortages.

In fact, Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian told GameSpot that both the PS4 and Xbox One may be hard to come by when they launch later this year. He believes it's "more likely than not that there will be initial shortages." Furthermore:

"This also partly explains why the manufacturers have been somewhat judicious in allocating pre-sale units to retailers, so that there won't be a lot of unhappy customers from day one."

Sebastian also said he believes both consoles will be on store shelves before Black Friday, which would ideally give the manufacturers a chance to replenish supply before Christmas is upon us. He added that console launches "are really the only equivalent of a 'red carpet' event for the industry." Now, don't you find that a little sad? It seems as if gaming will never enjoy the same level of glitz and glamour Hollywood enjoys.

Well, all our celebrities are behind the scenes. That's a big reason why...and let's face it, a lot of those guys don't exactly have the star "look."

TitanFall must have some MS fans drooling.
Hey, so The Digital Foundry revealed this game is based on the Valve engine. They also suggested that the game is very much a likely multi platform franchise after a certain timed contract ends ;)

I saw some projection today that said neither would sell as well as the current generation. Funny how opinions can differ so much.

I'll just wait patiently I guess, where's Xenris? I spent half my day beating Ni No Kuni only to find out that a certain sumbitch wasn't the final boss! This backlog is gonna take 5 more years at this rate.

Yeah but there is also reports that the current number of pre orders for both consoles is already double what the last generation had.

It must be nice to get paid to be the game industry equivalent of a fortune teller. You have to have big crystal balls to make the prediction you're talking about

between my backlog and these current-gen games that keep being announced, moving to the next-gen is in no hurry to happen by my liking.

I personally believe this generation will be a renaissance of gaming. I think the time is right.

Current generation we seen gaming come into the mainstream. Now basically everyone plays games in one form or another, where 10 years ago, it was a niche thing. Girls, Parents, Grandparents, everyone is gaming. With social media dominating society, and the fact that everyone is online now. Games will continue to grow, the eSports scene will continue to grow, and I think in 10 years time, most 1st world countries will have major eSports scenes similar to Korea.

And now everyone knows the next generation is coming. I really hope it does happen, as I think the gaming industry needs some new life breathed into it. It has felt a bit flat the last couple of years. I would like to see a few other genre's become very dominant.

This is why I don't think that next-gen is the end of console gaming.

I hope it is, especially in the case of ailing genres. I don't think that turning everything into an action shooter is sustainable.

I always wondered how you become one of these analysts, how much do these people get paid? Here I am working hard like a chump when these guys get paid to make predicitions like "new videogames are going to sell well" and "videogame sales will increase during the holiday season"

It really, really, really doesn't matter what these analysts say. A lot of them are just shills for the stockholders anyway. Also, the manufacturers know how to manage their inventory, to ensure a lasting supply. If there are any shortages at all, it won't matter.
