Indie Game Makers Getting PS4 Dev Kits Entirely Free Of Charge

How important are indie developers to Sony? Short answer: Very.

The company has made a point of highlighting the importance of supporting smaller, independent game makers in the upcoming generation. And that has been verified by what we've heard from designers.

Sony has gone even a step further as according to what sources told Polygon, some indie devs are getting PS4 dev kits entirely for free. The kit typically costs around $2,500 but Sony is loaning it out for free for a 1-year period. In fact, the sources claim that no dev kits have actually been sold, as the company's "Become a Registered Developer" website allows for that 1-year free-of-charge loan. Said one developer:

"All the indies I know got them for free. Sony has been amazing about kits and development thus far."

One other developer said Sony is handing out the dev kits "like candy." A Sony spokesperson added that self-publishing has been available on the PlayStation platforms for over five years now. The company gives indie devs "lots of options, including funding through the Pub Fund, which is back-end funding paid upon completion of the game." Sony also waives fees for indies and all digital titles, and they embrace new business models such as F2P, episodic and subscriptions.

Yes, if you're one of the little guys, you should know exactly where to turn.

Hopefully those SDKs come with a manual, I'd hate to have to burn down a place due to inferior ports.

Good thing SDKs are not $100 like the fruity company. Otherwise Sony would get flooded with useless crap.

No wonder MS got so scared they changed policies to be more friendly to indie devs.

Microsoft has to play catchup by miles and miles...

Could you imagine what'd happen if they didn't flip all the 180-switches?! It'd be the most hilarious failure of a console of all time. Even Dreamcast would be laughing in its grave at X1.

Wow, Sony is doing everything to win all the people it can. And it has worked because MS has had to change some policies now.

This should be a great gen for Sony.

The more I hear about Sony doing this kind of stuff, the more proud I am to call myself a Playstation fan. There have been a plethora of amazing indie games on the PSN thus far, and I can't wait to see what's in store for the PS4! I really can't wait until I can get my hands on a Playstation 4, it's going to be the best console in existence. Keep it going, Sony!

Is there anymore info on this please? Im busy developing my own game with a friend of mine (extreme indie, I know, hehe) and we also want to get in on playstation 4 indie development while its still young and not too heavily populated, our free prototype game (just to show the fans we mean business and we know what we are doing) is coming out very soon and we want to have our full paid version of the game available on the PS4 (and ofcourse naturally Vita, maybe PS3 as well) along with the PC/Mac/Linux release.

We are luckily using the Unity engine so it should translate over nicely with all the PS consoles.

We also wanna make use of Sony's Pub Fund feature as it is literally just us two and we are living off of our parents so we need funding just to survive. We plan on also using the funding to contract professional talent to make the full paid version really something special.

Any and all info and help on this subject would be much appreciated.
